Freshman Rules: The 1940's

This section contains the Freshmen Rules from 1940-1949.  Each year is listed and the rules follow.  Our archives do not own all the of the handbooks/manuals for the respective years.  If this is the case, just see the year above it.  The rules remained essentially the same through the decade.

1940-41 Student Handbook

Pg. 7 The Bonaventure Man The stated goal of the Freshmen Rules was to create Bonaventure Men.  This piece defines that person.

Pg. 31 Letter of Introduction  This describes the reasons behind the Rules, reminds freshmen that they will be enforced and also describes the mechanism for reporting abuse.

To be observed immediately and in their entirety

1.  Freshmen must primarily observe all the rules and regulations of the college.

2.  EVERY FRESHMAN MUST WEAR AT ALL TIMES A RESPECTABLE TIE AROUND THE NECK-BAND OF A RESPECTABLE SHIRT.

3.  EVERY FRESHMAN MUST WEAR AT ALL TIMES, WHICH THEY SHALL OBTAIN FROM THE STUDENT SENATE, A REGULATION “DINK”.

4.  EVERY FRESHMAN MUST WEAR A NEAT AND LEGIBLE SIGN (of white cardboard, at least 6’X6’) WITH HIS FIRST NAME AND LAST NAME PRINTED THERE-ON IN LETTERS AT LEAST TWO INCHES HIGH.  THIS SHOULD BE WORN AT ALL TIMES AND IN PLAIN VIEW.

5.  NO FRESHMAN SHALL USE THE CENTER PATH ACROSS CAMPUS OR THE MAIN OR RIGHT-HAND ENTRANCE TO DE LA ROCHE HALL.  ALL FRESHMEN USE THE ENTRANCE NEAREST THE ATHLETIC FIELD.

6.  Freshmen may ask for and accept rides to and from town BUT they must give precedence to all upperclassman at all times.

7.  Freshmen may have “dates” with members of the opposite sex.

8.  Freshmen must address politely and with natural liking: 1) all priests and professors; 2) all upperclassman; 3) ALL STUDENT SENATORS AS “SIR” OR “MISTER” ______; ALL OTHER FRESHMEN.

9.  The retirement from the Chapel and all other school activities is in order of seniority.  FRESHMEN REMAIN SEATED UNTIL ALL OTHERS HAVE LEFT.  Freshmen are to occupy the front seats to the Epistle side in the Chapel and the front seats in Alumni Hall at convocations there.

10.  FRESHMEN MUST PAY INITIATION FEE OF $1.50, IMMEDIATELY, TO THE TREASURER OF THE STUDENT SENATE.

11.  FRESHMEN ARE TO RISE AND REMAIN STANDING AT THE ENTRANCE OF ANY STUDENT SENATOR, IN ALL PLACES AND ALL TIMES, EXCEPTING IN CHAPEL, THEATRES OR IN A CLASS SESSION.  UPON RECOGNITION OF THE SENATOR, THE FRESHMAN MAY RESUME HIS SEAT. 

12.  FRESHMEN SHALL NOT SMOKE ON CAMPUS  EXCEPT IN THEIR PRIVATE ROOMS IN DEVEREUX HALL OR THE CAFETERIA.

13.  Freshmen shall give place to all Student Senators and all seniors at all in times in all places except Chapel, the local theatres and a class in session.

14.  All Freshmen shall carry lumberjack matches AT ALL TIMES for the convenience of all upperclassmen.

15.  The Freshmen class shall be at the immediate disposal of the Student Senate and the Athletic managers at all times for the performance of all detailed work in connection with any college activity.

16.  FRESHMEN SHALL WAIT  OUTSIDE  THE DINING HALL FOR  FIFTEEN  MINUTES AFTER THE REGULAR APPOINTED TIME FOR THE  NOON AND  EVENING  MEALS.

17.  ALL DAY-HOP FRESHMEN MUST OBSERVE ALL FRESHMEN RULES WHILE ON CAMPUS.

18.  FRESHMEN ARE TO SUPPORT ALL STUDENT ACTIVITIES.

19.  No Freshman shall wear any insignia or letter obtained in any high or prep school.

20.  Freshmen shall wait on tables at all school banquets.  

21.  All Freshmen shall be entirely clean shaven at all times.

22.  Freshmen shall memorize all college songs and cheers immediately.

23.  All Freshmen activities, individual or group, are to be approved by and supervised by the Student Senate.

THESE RULES SHALL BE ENFORCED TO THE LETTER.        

Infraction of any of them will be punished by a real old-fashioned Bonaventure initiation, where  action speaks louder than words.  These rules help make you real Bonaventure Men.  Saint Bonaventure College keeps only Bonaventure men on its rolls.
