Freshman Rules-Freshman Letter
This was a letter that appeared before the Freshman Rules were listed in the 1940-41 Student Manual. It relates the reasons for the rules and what will happen if not enforced. This letter, unless noted otherwise, appears before each set of Traditional Freshman Rules. The only difference being a change of date in the salutation: "To the Class of 19..". |

Traditional Freshman Regulations
To the Class of 1943:
Like other colleges and universities, Saint Bonaventure has traditions and ideals that she maintains as sacred. To foster respect for and devotion for them, Saint Bonaventure, like other colleges and universities, invokes a system of Freshmen Rules.
These rules serve no idle purpose. Every one of them is traceable to one or more of these definite aims: to promote congeniality, to inculcate school spirit, to effect an immediate transition from the high-school boy to the college man. They purpose, in a word, to orientate you as a true Saint Bonaventure collegian.
On the part of any student, be he a Freshman or Senior, this student-body tolerates no self-projection, no exalted opinion of self, no “holier than thou” attitude. Saint Bonaventure is a man’s school. To ensure that every Freshman be a real Saint Bonaventure MAN, these rules SHALL BE ENFORCED.
The Student Senate--particularly the Freshman Advisor and the two Sophomore Senators--supervise the Freshman class. To the Sophomore class, ordinarily, the Senate delegates the enforcement of the rules. Those Freshmen that override the rules will spell nothing but grief for themselves.
If at any time you believe that you are receiving unfair treatment, you may have recourse to the Freshman Adviser as the representative of the Student Senate. If your complaint is just, the abuse will be corrected.
The Student Senate welcomes you sincerely to Saint Bonaventure. We want you to become an integral part of the student life and activities here. The rules will help to that end. OBEY THEM.
