Dr. Benjamin
McLane Spock was born in New Haven, Connecticut on May 2, 1903. He
wrote the best seller Baby and Child Care in 1946 which earned him the
title of "pediatrician to the world." Dr. Spock compromised his
popularity by becoming an avid pacifist. He said "There's no point in
raising children if they are going to be burned alive." This is what
'converted' Dr. Spock to peace.
"God said love thy neighbor...that means stop the
killing."
In October of 1969 Dr. Spock came to
speak at St. Bonaventure. He talked about Vietnam and the draft.
He said, "the war in Vietnam is immoral and it is the duty of young men to
refuse to serve in it." Dr. Spock felt that it was, "no longer
sufficient to protect children from just the emotional stresses. Now
the greatest danger to life by far is nuclear disaster...Christ said, 'love
thy neighbor,' that means stop killing." Dr. Spock went on to talk
about how it was a tragedy for young men to be dying in Vietnam. He
also was against the draft. He thought that if you were against the
war then you shouldn't have to fight. Dr. Spock's final statement that
night was, "It is absolutely tragic that young men have been imprisoned for
being opposed to the war and doing as their consciences dictated." |
