    Like campuses all
across the country, there was high tension between the students and the
ROTC program during the Vietnam War.
On March 7, 1969 students and
professors protested the mandatory ROTC program.  The demonstration
lasted from 2 to 4:30.  67 members of the Democratic Society, with a
crowd of 100 onlookers, blocked the University Center Lobby during an ROTC
Inspector General's visit.  Student senator Bob McLellan led with signs
stating, "I'm against everything you are for." This was a peaceful protest
that made the General's visit last long over the time it had anticipated.
The ROTC turned to a voluntary program in 1970 relieving some of the
problems.  But there still were tensions everywhere against the ROTC
since so many students were in favor of peace.    |
