Memorial Endowment

 

The Dr. Al H. Nothem Memorial Endowment provides reference services and resource materials for use by those who aspire to become school administrators or supervisors in the Twin Tiers, and by administrators and faculty members from area public and private schools. 

St. Bonaventure University gratefully acknowledges the contribution of Dr. Nothem’s many years of dedicated service to generations of teachers that now lives on through this endowment.

Biography of Dr. Nothem 

Dr. Al H. Nothem joined the St. Bonaventure University faculty in 1966.  He held numerous administrative positions, including director of the teacher education program, full professor of education, vice president of academic affairs, chairman of the elementary/secondary education departments and chairman of the department of administration, supervision and curriculum.

Dr. Nothem was granted professor emeritus status from the University in July 1994.

In addition to his responsibilities at the University, Dr. Nothem also held a seat on the Portville Central School Board from 1967 to 1976.  Six of those years he served as school board president.

He was named to Who’s Who in Education and to Who’s Who in Educational Administration and in 1991 published a book, Collective Bargaining in Education:  A Casebook.

Dr. Nothem served as chairman of the Dresser-Rand Scholarship Committee; was a consultant to several Buffalo area schools and a member of the panel of mediators and fact-finders of the New York State Public Employee Relations Board beginning in 1968.

He was also a member of the state and national School Boards Association, Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of School Administrators, American Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Association of Teacher Educators and Phi Delta Kappa.

Dr. Nothem received his bachelor’s degree from Morningside (Iowa) College, his M.S. degree from Drake University and his Ed.D. degree from Nebraska University.
