!932 through 1944 Elections
From 1932 to 1944, four presidential elections were held. In each one, Franklin Roosevelt (D) ran and won the presidency, making him the first and only president to ever hold office for more than two terms. In the 1932 election, Roosevelt and his running mate, John Nance Garner ran against Herbert Hoover (R). In 1936, Roosevelt and Garner ran against Alf Landon (R) and Frank Knox. In the 1940 election, Roosevelt and his new running mate, Henry A. Wallace, ran against Wendell Wilkie (R) and his running mate, Charles L. McNary. In the 1944 election, Roosevelt ran for the last time with a new running mate, Harry S. Truman. They ran against Thomas E. Dewey (R) and his running mate John W. Becker. Roosevelt's declining health at this point was becoming a concern. On April 12, 1945, Roosevelt died, making Harry S. Truman the 33rd president of the United States.
