Another copy of the contents is a three page stapled version with editor marks in black ink.  The third copy contains two pages that have been paper clipped together.  The editor marks are featured in black ink.  Finally there is one loose page that is unedited and lists chapters seven through nine.

-Sticky Fingers Volume I 1996, put together by John F. Carr.  It is in excellent condition, no visible marks or stains on it.  The magazine includes the first 6 issues of Sticky Fingers Magazine that were published in 1996.

 

-Sticky Fingers IV issues 3, 4, 5 and 6.  These Single issues are from 1999 and 2000.

These two book covers are in oversized folders housed separately from the Carr Collection boxes.  Siege of Tarr-Hostigos and Kalvan Kingmaker are both authored by John F. Carr.  The cover artist for these two dust jackets is Alan Gutierrez.  The actual books are currently in circulation at the Friedsam Memorial Library at St. Bonaventure University.  The Friedsam Memorial Library added these dust jackets to the Carr Collection.  The call #’s for these two books at the Friedsam Library are:

The Belly River Riddle [loose paper]

The original folder containing these pages was labeled “The Belly River Riddle (Dinosaur Graveyard)-(The Hell creek Catastrophe).”

-The contents include one page from the May 17th, 1976 TIME magazine. (Page 57-58)    One of the main articles in the magazine cut out is a story labeled “Hot-Blooded Dinosaurs?”

- The second and last item in the folder is 13 pages photocopied from the book “Dinosaurs: Their Discovery & Their World” by Edwin H. Colbert.

 

The Belly River Riddle [spiral notebook]

The cover description of the green notebook is “dri-point Theme Book.  In black pen written across the top of the cover is “Belly River Riddle.”  Each page in the notebook is a rough draft or summary of the chapters written in pen.  There are side-notes on almost every page going along with the chapter summaries. 

 

 

Dance of the Dwarves: Part Three - the Year of the Clown [typescript]

This is an edited draft of “Dance of the Dwarves” by John F. Carr. The draft starts on page 149 and ends on page 228.  The folder the draft originally came in was labeled “The Year of the Clown.”  It is unsure if that is the name of the entire story, with “Dance of the Dwarves” only being one section of it.  The edges of every page feature smoke damage to an extent.

-Two copies of a monthly promo pamphlet for Major Book’s publication.  John F. Carr’s novel Pain Gain is featured as one of the four top books being promoted for the August promotion pamphlet.

This 53-page draft by John F Carr is approximately 14,250 words.  There is no visible damage to the pages. The draft originally was stored in a First Class USPS envelope sent on July 27th, 1989.

Two edited copies of Science Fiction as Viewed from Down Under by John F. Carr.  Page one for each draft states the story is approximately 2,500 words.  Several of the pages in copy feature visible smoke damage along the edges of the pages. 

 

 

Untitled Novel (Circa 1969) [spiral notebook]

This is a purple spiral notebook, 11 IN. x 8 ½ IN. with 80 sheets.  This notebook features an untitled novel draft by John F. Carr and Fred Longworth.  The draft is incomplete, as it is handwritten chapter summaries or outlines.  There are several loose cotton papers in the front of the notebook that are the first pages and chapters for the novel outline.  Every page in the notebook show water damage to an extent, located at the top half of each page.  The writing on the pages however is still legible.

53-page edited draft by John F. Carr, features black pen marks by the editor throughout the draft.  All the pages except the first page have been numbered on the top right corner of each page by black pen.  The top of the backside of the last page has a rust-colored stain.  The top left corner of the first page has a sticker that says:

             Granada Hills, CA 91344”

This draft originally came in a yellow USPS priority mail envelope mailed from New York on February 18th.

Carr and Camden Benares.  The story starts on page 1 and ends on page 362.  The editor of this draft is unknown while the editor’s marks appear in black ink and pencil.  The heading of each page features “Benares and Carr – Phillip 1,” and then is followed by the page number.  There is damage to each page in this draft, presumably from smoke.  The top, right and bottom edges are crumpled and have a brown stain to them.

Carr and Camden Benares.  The story starts on page 1 and ends on page 362.  However there is an extra page after 362 that is numbered page 357, this page does not correspond with the first page 357 in the draft.   The editor of this draft is unknown while the editor’s marks appear in black ink. The heading of each page features “Benares and Carr – Phillip 1,” and then is followed by the page number.  On page 1, written in blue ink at the top left of the page is “Bio-wars.”  Few pages but not the entire draft features some smoke damage to the outlying edges, overall not as significant as the damage to Carr-05-01.

This draft of “Eastern Passage” by John F. Carr and Camden Benares is unfinished.  The heading on the title page is “Camden Benares and John F. Carr – 10512 Yarmouth Ave. – Granada Hills, Cal. 91344 – (213) 360-9211,” and “Projected 55,000 words – Usual rights, usual rates.” The draft starts on page 1 and goes to page 63. Then another copy of pages 40 through 52 comes after page 63.  After the repeat of page 52 the draft starts on chapter 12, which is numbered 12-1 through 12-10.  There is smoke damage visible throughout the draft, most noticeably on the cover page.

These files were originally bound with a blue cover that was titled “Clerical Kit” for the “Eastern Passage” story.  The files are split into three sections.  First is a typed three page Prologue for the draft.  The second section is a six-page edited draft of chapter two for the story.  The paper used for the six pages is recycled paper; with the story text typed on the backside of old paper.  The edits for this chapter have been corrected with a typewriter.  The third section is a full chapter-by-chapter summary for the story.  It features handwritten edits and notes from either John F. Carr and or Camden Benares.  In the chapter summary section is a note card which features handwritten notes about the storyline, the author of this note card is unclear.

Carr and Camden Benares.  There are two items in this folder, first a four page glossary of terms, then the title page + draft.  The glossary of terms is on brown stained paper.  The heading on each page is “Benares and Carr – page number.”  The draft starts with the title page.  There is a sticker on the top left corner of the title page that reads “JOHN F. CARR – Editor, SFWA Bulletin – 10512 Yarmouth Avenue – Granada Hills, CA 91344.”  The heading on the top right of the title page reads “Approximately 56,000 words.”  The draft starts on page 1 to page 219.  The editor is unknown, while the editor’s marks appear in pencil.

These letters are from John F. Carr and Roland Green.  The dates of these letters range from 1982 to 1987.  The letters tend to focus on the Lord Kalvan series of novels that John F. Carr and Roland Green were writing together.  Aside from their correspondence letters, there is a fan mail letter, a black and white sketch related to the Kalvan series, and a photograph of Roland Green’s family.  There is smoke or fire damage to most of the letters in this folder along the outside edges of each piece of paper.

Carr in red pen comments, “This is the working complete (first) draft of Kalvan Kingmaker, with my corrections and additions as of September 3rd, 2000.” Below this note, in black, he adds, “and additions of Sept 21, 2000-Oct-Jan 1.” Another note signed and dated 9/26/08 in black pen reads, “I found this with Gunpowder God original MS.” The draft does not seem to be complete, for it is missing pages 40-100. The page contains a short review by Darrell Schweitzer of a chapter of one of John F. Carr’s upcoming novels. The chapter is identified as “The Dance of the Dwarfs.” This chapter is listed in the beginning of Carnifex Mardi Gras as being part of the novel.

 

Publisher Correspondence 1984-89 [miscellaneous]

From a file folder labeled “Publisher Correspondence.” The contents are a collection of letters written by John F. Carr and many other individuals. The letters received by Carr include letter from 7 different publishers, his agent, his friend and colleague Roland Green, and Alan Gutierrez, the artist who drew the cover art for many of Carr’s novels. The topics of the letters deal almost exclusively with Carr’s various literary projects, most notably Kalvan Kingmaker and an unpublished work referred to as The Thunder of Iron Horsemen. The letters are semi-organized in a backwards-chronological order, beginning with 1989 and ending with 1984, although there are letters that fall out of order. Also included in the folder are agreements with publishers concerning the sale of books and articles. Several contracts regarding these sales are included in the folder as well. Some of the contents of this folder are very badly fire damaged: these papers have been placed in their own file within the folder.

This file contains two sets of loose sheets. The first set is titled, “The Crying Clown Celebration: a novel of the future.” This set is signed and dated 4/25/08 by John F. Carr, with a note that reads: “Original for agent outline and story done in 1978 or ’79, for proposal book (octet) The Crying Clown Celebration. This was to be our breakout series and we worked on the background/setting/future history starting 1975/76 and we were still working on it until Camden’s fatal heart attack in 2000…” The outline is 44 pages long and covers the plots of all eight planned books. The second set of loose sheets is a short story by Camden Benares titled “A Legacy of Sex, Charisma and Death.” The story is 25 pages long and appears to be a predecessor of one of the planned Crying Clown Celebration novels.

A set of badly damaged loose sheets with a title page that reads, “PIPER, by M.E. Knerr, copyright 1983 by M.E. Knerr.” A signed note from John F. Carr explains that this is the original manuscript of an unpublished biography of H. Beam Piper written by Piper’s friend Mike Knerr, of which there are only two copies known to exist. Carr makes extensive use of this document in his book H. Beam Piper: a Biography. The manuscript is extensively edited in blue, green, and black ink. Carr’s note goes on to explain that the manuscript was badly damaged by smoke, fire, and water, during a house/office fire in 1999. The manuscript was discovered in a pile of papers and boxes that the firemen had thrown from Carr’s window in order to get rid of combustibles. The 253-page manuscript is therefore very fragile, and the pages have been placed in plastic sleeves for their protection. This document should be handled with great care.

The first magazine, Future combined with Science Fiction Stories, was published in September 1950, and it includes a short story by Piper titled Flight from Tomorrow, beginning on page 36. The second magazine, Fantastic Universe, was published in December 1959, and it includes a short story by Piper titled The Answer, beginning on page 5. Both magazines are very fragile; their pages are yellowed and brittle. In the case of Fantastic Universe, the cover is completed detached from the rest of the volume.

The document appears to include pieces from several different drafts, and it appears not to be the final copy. The sections of the piece also seem to be jumbled. In his annotated copy of the John F. Carr Collection list (Carr-17-15), Jim Landau explains the history of this document:

“…after having sent me a good portion of the typescript for Fireseed Wars, John had a hard disk failure which meant he lost all copies of the text except for the typescript he sent me.  I both photocopied and scanned the typescript and sent both back to John.  If the word “scanned” appears and is not in John’s handwriting, then I wrote it as a note to myself that I finished scanning that chapter.”

Several documents were found stored in the volume, folded in half. A typed partial manuscript of John F. Carr’s The Fireseed Wars, originally titled Queen Rylla’s Crown. Each chapter was originally separated with a paperclip, which have since been removed to preserve the document. The first page of each chapter has the word “scanned” written on it in Landau’s handwriting. According to Landau, John Carr suffered a computer hard drive crash while in the middle of writing The Fireseed Wars. In response, Landau scanned and photocopied each chapter of the manuscript that Carr had sent to him in order to send back to Carr.
