The first Bible week in America was held at St. Bonaventure University in 1941. Irenaeus celebrated this week whole-heartedly and with much conviction. He gave countless talks and wrote many articles about the history of the Bible, the different types of Bibles, and the message of the Bible. The idea began when Fr. Thomas Plassmann, then President of the University and renowned Biblical scholar, encouraged special events commemorating the Holy Bible. When the St. Anthony Guild Press published a special edition of the Bible called Confraternity in 1941, Irenaeus thought it would be a good time to honor the Bible. He also thought that at this time he could commemorate the contributions of Franciscan Biblical studies. Thus, the first National Bible Week was held at Bona's. This "Bible Week" cachet was created solely for the First National Bible Week through the efforts of Fr. Irenaeus.
