The Arrival of the Friars in Western New York, p. 18

Student activities outside the classroom are an important part of the life of the university.  As early as 1861 students were providing public entertainment in Olean with the performance of Sebastian, the Roman Martyr.   The James Dolan Literary Association was organized in 1894 to instill a love of literature and skill in public speaking.  The Laurel (1899) and The Bona Venture (1926) are important outlets for student creativity and expression.  Student government started with a Student Council (1921) which became the Student Senate (1926).  A Women’s Council (1946) was created to support the interests of women students.  Today there are nearly 100 groups on campus devoted to student activities—athletic, social, intellectual and spiritual.
