The Arrival of the Friars in Western New York, p. 6

After a sudden illness, Nicholas Devereux died on December 29, 1855.  Such was the esteem felt for him that over 5,000 people participated in his Utica funeral. Father Pamphilus filled his seat on the Board of Trustees, providing the first Franciscan representation there. Although Devereux had not included provision for the establishment of the Franciscan community in his will, Mary Devereux and the rest of the family carried out his intentions, transferring the Allegany property in June 1856.

St. Pacificus’ Church, Humphrey , N.Y.
Founded 1855 by Fr. Pamphilus da Magliano

The Franciscans leaped into their missionary work.  Within days of his arrival Father Pamphilus had performed a baptism.  He established St. Pacificus’ parish in Humphrey, a Church was built near the village of Chapelsburg, and the small group took over responsibility for Olean, Randolph, South Valley, Cuba, Allegany and Chipmunk.

Meanwhile, the first steps towards the establishment of the Allegany monastery were proceeding.
