The Arrival
of the Friars in Western New
York, p. 7
The
site chosen for the monastery was south of the road between Allegany and
Olean
and the Erie Railroad tracks. Bishop
Timon suggested that land north of those roads, in the area of the current
cemetery would be preferred, and future floods demonstrated his wisdom.
Nevertheless, the original site was used, the cornerstone being laid on
August 20, 1856.
St. Nicholas Church,
Allegany
,
NY
Built in 1854, this was the first church in Allegany used by the
Franciscan Friars.
A
high Mass was held in St. Nicholas Church in Allegany, celebrated by Father
Pamphilus, assisted by Fathers Sixtus and Samuel.
Bishop Timon and Bishop Loughlin of
Brooklyn
were also present. After Mass a
procession went to the site of the new building.
Over two thousand people stood in the rain to attend the dedication.
The Ellicottville parish choir, Dunkirk Brass Band and Artillery Company
K provided music. After the blessing
of the cornerstone, Bishop Timon delivered a sermon under a large tent on the
site, followed by a meal under that tent. One
wonders whether today’s tent covered dining outside of Hickey Dining Hall
takes place on the same ground as this earliest event.
