The Arrival of the Friars in Western New York, p. 5

The four Franciscans lived with John C. Devereux briefly, then in the home of Thomas McMahon, a land agent for the Devereux Company, for several months.  The friars took the responsibility for St. Philip Neri Church and lived in a house nearby while they awaited the construction of their permanent home in Allegany.

The second building was their home for several years while the 1st college campus building was built.

The St. Francis Missionary and Benevolent Society was established July 17, 1855 replacing the older society.  Trustees of the Society were Nicholas, Mary D., John C. and Thos. B. Devereux and Bishop Timon.  The purpose of the Society was “to provide for Missionary duties…, for aiding the Poor and Orphans and for instructing the ignorant by teaching, as far as means permit, Divine and humane science and for no other object.”
