Athletics also became more central to life at St. Bonaventure.  An extensive intramural program developed and interscholastic sports received a boost under the guidance of Father Joseph and Father James Dolan who recruited future Baseball Hall of Fame members John J. McGraw and Hugh Jennings as player coaches.  This tradition of striving for athletic excellence burgeoned into a longstanding rivalry with Niagara University and Canisius College .  St. Bonaventure’s commitment to athletics led the football team to the Tobacco Bowl in 1946, the 1970 basketball team to the NCAA Final Four, and the baseball team to the 2004 NCAA tournament.
