Father Joe’s term was also the beginning of a series of calamities on the campus--with fire and water wreaking havoc.  The rebuilt College Building was severely damaged by fire on June 30, 1908.  It reopened as Lynch Hall in 1909.

The campus grew over the next decades with Butler Gym (1918) and Devereux Hall (1928) appearing.  Then fire struck again on May 5, 1930.  The original building with monastery, seminary and church was destroyed.  All that remained was the Sister’s Convent which was attached to the rear of the building.  This was a tremendous blow to the college, but spirits remained high and, though the balance of the term was cancelled, commencement proceeded as usual.  Rebuilding began immediately, the groundbreaking for an addition to Devereux Hall to house a temporary seminary taking place on June 3rd.
