Father Joe's carvings would often take their inspiration from a magazine or newspaper advertisement.  He would then use that inspiration to depict something of beauty on a sketch or drawing, finally moving on to the carving.

bulletFr. Joe's love of nature, and the creatures living within that complex structure, is obvious when looking at much of his subject matter and research.  There is a study done by Fr. Ruther in the Archives of all the animals present in the Bible.  Their metaphorical significance is discussed in detail as Fr. Joe makes his thoughts clear.

Here is an example of a magazine picture used by Fr. Joe coming to a final product in the carving.  This was a small portion of a large full page ad.  His focus on the small bottom corner illustrates Fr. Joe's particular interest in this piece.  Also note the difference in focus and perspective between the carving and the ad.

For another example of his working methods go here.
