The Arrival of the Friars in Western New York, p. 20
The
Franciscan roots of the university are reflected most obviously in the work of
University Ministries and its subsidiary units.
Whether serving in the oldest student-run soup kitchen in the nation,
helping “at risk” students as Bona Buddies, assisting the ministry of Mount
Irenaeus or acting in the Franciscan Mystery Players, SBU campus members work in
the Franciscan tradition.

If
we recall that the purpose of the St. Francis Missionary and Benevolent Society
was “to provide for Missionary duties…, for aiding the Poor and Orphans and
for instructing the ignorant by teaching, as far as means permit, Divine and
humane science…” we can see how successful the efforts of Bishop Timon, the
Devereux family and Father Pamphilus da Magliano have been in the last 150
years.
