The announcement to the university community that a new student recreation center would be built came in April of 2002. Previously, students had to travel a mile off campus to access the Bonaventure fitness center. William Richter, a member of the board of trustees, made a $3 million donation to the University for a recreation center. The $6.2 million Richter Center was officially dedicated and opened on Sept. 30, 2004.
The Richter Center contains 3 basketball courts, 2 racquetball/squash courts, a jogging/walking track, equipment check out, a multi-purpose aerobics room, a weight room, a cardio area, locker rooms, and a climbing wall. The center is 45,000 sq. ft. in size, with a large central atrium, two floors, and open 24 hours a day.
