The Thomas Merton Center

The Merton Center is home to SBU's University Ministries. The Center is open 24 hours a day and has gathering rooms for students, a meditation chapel, and a kitchen. On the other side of the building is the Engineering Department which oversees the campus heating plant. Students often gather at U-Min in order to prepare a home-cooked meal, to study, to meet, or simply to relax. U-Min allows students to practice the Franciscan ideal of living well together, of taking care of one another, and serving the community. In 2016, the Thomas Merton Center was demolished to build a new space for University Ministries. The McGinley-Carney Center for Franciscan Ministry opened in 2017.
