Nicholas met Mary Dolbeare Butler through repeated business trips to New York City. Nicholas did business with Mary's Father, Dr. Benjamin Butler, a shipping merchant that was a member of the New York Stock exchange. The two were married on November, 28 of 1817. They had three children together, Hannah, John and Thomas.
