History of Vietnam

The Vietnam War started soon after the Geneva Conference of 1954. This provisionally divided Vietnam in two.  In the North was the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam in the South. The Vietnamese civil war quickly escalated into an international conflict with the United States heavily supporting the South.  Despite peace attempts in 1973 fighting did not end until 1975 when South Vietnam collapsed and there was unification of Vietnam by the North.  This resulted in a twenty-five year period of US troops in Vietnam.  Almost three million US men were sent to fight in Vietnam.  Over 2.5 million people on both sides were killed.  The questionable cause of the war created some of the strongest tensions in US history.
