Gil Stinger Lecture Series, 1984-1989

In April 1984, Gil Stinger presented a lecture series to students and faculty entitled “World of Words.” The theme of this lecture series was the rapid globalization of the media, and understanding of the relevance of journalism within an increasingly technological world. By 1989, the focus of the series aimed toward media and the law. Since the lectures focused on the media and journalism, the lectures were open to all Mass Communication students.

 

Lecture Series Speaker 1985

Robert J. McCarthy participated in the Lecture Series in 1985. He graduated from St. Bonaventure with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1976. Three years after graduation he was Cattaraugus County Bureau Chief as well as becoming a staff member of the Olean Times Herald. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Buffalo Evening News as a general assignment reporter. Around 1985 he started teaching freshman journalism courses at St Bonaventure and Daemen College.

 

Lecture Series Speaker 1986

Dr. Richard W. Gates spoke February 17, 1986, for the “You and the World of Words” Lecture Series. Gates started as a commercial photographer in Buffalo and during 1986 he was teaching photography in the Department of Mass Communication. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960 at the State University College at Buffalo, and earned his Master’s two years later. In 1968 he earned his Master of Arts degree in Instructional Communication from Syracuse University. In 1970 he received his PhD from the University of Iowa. For four years he taught senior high school students in the Lab School at the University of Iowa on the elements of photography. He had also been president of the Faculty Society and a member of the Olean School Board.

Other lecture speakers included Dr. Barry Gan, Dr. Richard W. Gates, Dr. Boyd Litzinger and Penny Williams of Buffalo Channel 2 news.

Some speakers during the spring semester of 1987 were Chuck Pollock, Times Herald Sports Editor; Bob Mccarthy, Buffalo News Reporter; and Attorney Elaine Niver Dwyer, former reporter. Some of the lectures offered were “Life’s Toy Department,” “Covering the Big City,” and “The Police and The Press”

 

Lecture Series Speakers 1988

Speakers in the year of 1988 included Kevin Keenan, Chuck Pollock, and Bob McCarthy. Some of the lectures included “Broadcasting the News,” “The Law and Your Typewriter,” and “Covering Sports.”

Lenna Lecture Series 1993

The Reginald Lenna Visiting Professors Program at St. Bonaventure University was founded by Reginald A. and Elizabeth Lenna of Jamestown, in 1990. In the spring semester of 1993 between April 14 and April 26, Alan and Barbara Mackenzie were able to visit St. Bonaventure through the Lenna Lecture Program. The year’s lecture series focused on international journalism. The program was meant to create awareness on how the media in international countries portrayed news as well as offering students a better understanding of international cultures. Some of the lecture topics included Scottish culture and nationalism within the new Europe, the British and Scottish press, British broadcast journalism, and Scottish views of America and Americans.

Alan and Barbara Mackenzie

Alan Mackenzie was born on January 31, 1941 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a former reporter and editor for British and Scottish newspapers and had designed and developed the United Kingdom’s first postgraduate diploma course in journalism.

Barbara Mackenzie was born on July 13, 1947 in England. She was a part-time lecturer at the Scottish Centre for Journalism Students and Glasgow Polytechnic.
