Physical Description:

The typescript has no cover.  The first two pages are of parchment paper and are drafts of book cover.  They have printer's marks in green on them.  Some of the transcript are three hole punched. There are printer's marks in the margins done with red pencil.  Corrections are done in pencil, blue ink, and red pencil throughout the text.  Some pages are constructed by typing on separate pages and pasted to the sheet.  They consist of one, two, or more different pastings.  Most of the pages are crossed out from corner to corner.  There is yellow post-a-notes on several pages with questions and the answers pertaining to parts of the text.  There is handwritten pages throughout the transcript with a letter following the page numbers. The number 4548 6/24 appears at the beginning and the end of the transcript.  The last 58 pages is the index.

Notes:

The yellow post-a-notes in the transcript seem to be notes or questions from the editor to Jim.  Jim either answers the questions or says he doesn't know and will make the changes needed.

Physical Description:

Each notebook is assigned a time period  starting with 1925 and continuing to 1968.  Some have information for a year and others have the information for two or more years.  There is tabs on the pages or notebook with the year on it.  There is a lot of typed pages both sides mixed with scrapbook like pages.  These pages have news articles cut out and pasted or taped on them.  Each page is crossed out with pencil or blue ink from corner to corner.

The page numbers are not in sequence.  These are pages pulled from the full typescript or may be duplicates. There is printer's marks in black in the margins with printer's marks in red in the text.  Words are underlined in black pencil.

The sheets are stacked with no cover with two pages per sheet.  There is no marks at all on any of the sheets except the back of one sheet in the middle (pg. 334-335) "Jim Bishop' is written in blue ink.

Physical Description:

The galley is stamped on every sheet in red '"Master Proof" American-Stratford Composing Room Dw.,Inc. Brattleboro, Vermont  Jun 4, 1971". OK as corrected 6/14 is written in red pencil on the upper left of the first sheet.  Half the sheets have J initialed in the lower right corner with other initials being RJ then Mar in green.  There is two pages per sheet and not very many corrections done at all.  There is one page inserted (495) size 22.5 x 29cm with red pencil marks.  Corrections, deletions, and printer's marks are done in red and green ink with some red pencil marks.  On the back of the last sheet "Master Proof' Jun 10, 1971 is stamped in red. #4548 is in green ink and 'AA's are in Jun 10, 1971' are in black ink.  Days of Martin Luther King, Jr. pps 336-500 E (gals 131-192) are in green ink.  There is some shorthand notes and the date 6/29 in pencil.

Physical Description:

It is stamped on every sheet in red '"Master Proof" American-Stratford Composing Room Dw., Inc.  Brattleboro, Vermont  April 29, 1971'.  Corrections CH 5/13 is written on the first sheet.  Corrections, deletions, and printer's marks are in green and blue ink, and red pencil.  The initials RJ, MK, T & J are in green in the lower right corner.  The J initial is on the last half of the sheets. There is one long page per sheet.  The printer's marks are in the margins.  On the back of the sheets at various intervals is the number of sheets completed and the date. These are initialed by various people.  At the same time the top of the next page has 'Correct initialed and the date' written on it at the top.  The next to the last page has an insert attached (18 x 29cm) with typed text and corrections.  On the back of the last page "Master Proof May 14, 1971' stamped in red. PV 6/10 is in pencil.  A101 C103B & C89 in blue ink.  At the top is 'Correct PH 5/26' is in green with the number 4548 and Copy 500-735 also in green.  Master 5-6-71 is in red.

Physical Description:

There is four pages per sheet.  They are sideways on the short side.  There is a solid black line all around the outside of the four pages with a double line down the middle separating the four pages, two to a side.  The printer's marks are in green as are initials in the upper right corner.  Two pages are crossed off in red and 'locked at end of job' is written in.  These are pages 49 and 106.  Index to come is written in green on page 501. Martin Luther King, Jr. is in green with #4548 and fm i-xii; text 1-500; 501-Index to come.  "Master Proof American-Stratford Composing Room Dw., Inc.  Brattleboro, Vermont Jun 24, 1971 is stamped in red.  There is a note "This is a Courtesy Set Only  This form may have already gone to press'.
