ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Christ the King Seminary will be piloting a Distance Learning program for two of its continuing education classes during the fall 2010 semester, including an option at St. Bonaventure University.
The new program is intended to provide more options to help students access the seminary’s courses in the manner most convenient to their lifestyle and needs. Students who register to take either “Theology of God” (Tuesdays, 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 14) or “The Gospels” (Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 16) will be given the option of taking the class at the Seminary’s East Aurora campus or taking it via video-conferencing technology at St. Bonaventure University.
The live and interactive experience will be facilitated by two-way communication with the instructor. St. Bonaventure will utilize a conference room in the John J. Murphy Building for the course, which is a synchronous video-conference class. The conference room will be equipped with a distance learning cart, including a large screen TV and camera.
The pilot program will give those potential students who are unable to travel to East Aurora the ability to take a class there while staying closer to home.
“We know there is a desire throughout the Diocese for people to enrich their faith and participate in spiritual and personal growth and formation,” said Deacon Don Weigel, coordinator of Academic Services for the Seminary. “However, given the wide geographic area of the Diocese, some people would have to travel great distances in order to take a course at the Seminary. This is a way to bring the courses to them.”
