Senior artwork to be = displayed in the=20 Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts

St. Bonaventure University seniors = Katie Danahy=20 and Byron Morgan will have their artwork displayed in their own = galleries.=20 From May 11 through June 20, 2010, the 2010 Senior Visual Art = Exhibit =935=20 & 2=94 will be on display in two small galleries in the Regina = A. Quick=20 Center for the Arts theater atrium.

Danahy, an art major, grew up in = Buffalo and=20 attended Mount Mercy Academy. Her main focus is painting florals = and=20 objects found in nature.

Morgan, from Sandusky, N.Y., near = Arcade,=20 attended Pioneer Central High School where he majored in visual = arts.=20 Morgan majors in journalism and mass communication at St. = Bonaventure and=20 works in mixed media, collage, acrylic paintings and found object = art.=20

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 = p.m., Monday=20 through Friday, and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

St. Bonaventure students = complete=20 initiation into the Catholic Church

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. =97 Five St. Bonaventure = University=20 students have recently become fully initiated members of the = Catholic=20 Church

Caitlin Veri of Syracuse, N.Y., James Torres of=20 Amityville, N.Y., Sheree Ortiz of New York, N.Y., Katelyn Himes of = Allegany, N.Y., and Kaitlynn Alico of West Seneca, N.Y., all have=20 successfully completed the Church=92s process of initiation, = officially=20 known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, or the = RCIA.

In order to complete the process, those = participating must=20 receive the three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation = and=20 Eucharist.

Veri and Torres received all three Sacraments at = St.=20 Bonaventure and were thereby incorporated into the Catholic Church = for the=20 first time.

According to Veri, currently a third-year = student, she=20 hadn=92t given conversion much thought until coming to St. = Bonaventure.=20 After starting to attend Mass her first year on campus, she began = to feel=20 increasingly comfortable in the Church.

=93Sophomore year I also began playing = percussion for the=20 Music Ministry,=94 Veri said, =93and that definitely helped me = make a deeper=20 connection with my growing faith.=94

Veri said the fact that she was able to complete = this part=20 of her faith journey at St. Bonaventure made the process all the = more=20 special.

=93I=92m thrilled that I was able to be = initiated into the=20 Church here at Bonaventure,=94 Veri said. =93This is where I found = my faith.=20 I=92m grateful that my family was able to join my Bonaventure = family in this=20 celebration.=94

Ortiz, Himes and Alico, already baptized at a = young age,=20 received the other necessary Sacraments at St. Bonaventure. Ortiz = received=20 Confirmation and Eucharist, while Himes and Alico were = confirmed.

Ortiz said she never had the opportunity to = receive the=20 remaining two Sacraments until coming to St. Bonaventure. Once = enrolled,=20 she began seeking out the opportunity in order to solidify her own = values=20 and beliefs.

=93I decided to commit to the RCIA because it = was a truly=20 wonderful opportunity that I did not want to miss,=94 Ortiz said. = =93Being at=20 St. Bonaventure for three years made me realize that this was the = place=20 where I was meant to be, where I needed to be and where my new = life,=20 spiritually, needed to begin.=94

According to Sister Elise Mora, O.S.F., who = directs the=20 program, students typically learn about the opportunity through=20 word-of-mouth. Fliers are also distributed at the University = Chapel at the=20 beginning of each fall semester.

=93The program is a rather abbreviated one,=94 = said Mora. =93It=20 should last a full year; however, we begin in September and end at = Easter=97or a tiny bit later. We work around the academic = calendar, when=20 students are on campus.=94

Bob Donius, vice president for University = Ministries, said=20 that the renewal of the RCIA in the Catholic Church was decreed by = the=20 Second Vatican Council (1963-65) and brought into a revised = practice in=20 the early 1970s.

=93The Church here at Bona=92s has been = following this=20 practice since that time, with varying numbers of students = participating=20 from year to year,=94 Donius said.

Klingler=20 recognized for outstanding service to student health on campus=20

Lauryn Klingler, a St. Bonaventure University sophomore = political=20 science major from Rochester, N.Y., has earned the Student Award = from the=20 New York State College Health Association.

The Student Award is given to a student dedicated to the health = of=20 his/her campus and/or to the New York State College Health = Association,=20 according to the NYSCHA website, www.nyscha.org. During her time = as an=20 intern in SBU=92s Health Services, Klingler has done much to = improve the=20 quality of student wellness programs on campus. She coordinated a = health=20 fair for college students and the surrounding community, = identified=20 communities to spread awareness of flu prevention and flu vaccine = clinics,=20 and reviewed policies and staffing patterns of peer campuses and = health=20 concerns for Catholic campuses. Klingler is also a regular=20 volunteer-coordinator at The Warming House, SBU=92s soup kitchen. =

Melissa Gallison-Blackstone, director of Health Services, = nominated=20 Klingler. She laid out the qualities of Klingler=92s commitment = and=20 dedication in her nomination letter.

=93I have had the pleasure of working with Lauryn in many = capacities in=20 Health Services where she has been an intern from the St. = Bonaventure=20 University Center for Community Engagement and AmeriCorps = volunteer,=94=20 Gallison-Blackstone said. =93She has eagerly accepted = responsibility for=20 many projects that make a tangible difference to Student Health = Services=20 at SBU.=94

Larry Sorokes, director of the Center for Community Engagement, = is=20 impressed by Klingler=92s active integration of service and = learning.=20 =93Lauryn is a tremendous example of the Bonaventure spirit that = integrates=20 service, community, and scholarship,=94 he said. =93Her work is an = ideal=20 example of how service internships are to be carried out=97with a = strong=20 sense of dedication, a commitment to personal and group = reflection, and an=20 interest in using the internship to discern a connection between = service=20 and career/vocation.=94

P&G executive, an '83 alumna, = to keynote=20 university's 150th Commencement

One of the university=92s most accomplished = graduates will=20 give the keynote address May 16 at St. Bonaventure University=92s = 150th=20 Commencement Exercises.

Deb Henretta, SBU class of 1983 and = group=20 president for Procter & Gamble Asia, will also receive an = honorary=20 doctorate of humane letters.

=93We=92re thrilled that Deb = is coming=20 from the other side of the globe to share her wisdom at her alma = mater,=94=20 said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., university president. =93To have = one of=20 the most respected businesswomen in the world speak to our = graduates is=20 truly an honor.=94

Henretta, who graduated from SBU=92s = renowned=20 Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication, heads Procter = &=20 Gamble=92s $14 billion retail business in Asia, including = on-the-ground=20 operations in 14 major markets and another 22 countries through=20 distributor operations. She is responsible for P&G=92s Asia = portfolio=20 that touches close to 2 billion consumers.

Since Henretta = took over=20 in 2005, P&G Asia has delivered four consecutive years of = volume,=20 sales and profit growth =97 doubling sales through portfolio and=20 distribution expansion, brand building, and = innovation.

Prior to=20 her Asia role, she was the first woman to lead P&G=92s Global = Baby Care=20 business when she was promoted to president of P&G Global Baby = Care in=20 2001. She finished her time with Baby Care having delivered four=20 consecutive years of record growth in sales, volume and profit, = results=20 not seen in nearly two decades.

Beyond P&G, Henretta is = serving=20 a second term on the Board of Singapore=92s Economic Development = Board,=20 which acts as a board of directors for the country of Singapore. = In 2009,=20 she was honored to participate in a select Economic Strategies = Committee=20 commissioned by Singapore=92s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and = charged=20 with developing a 10-year strategic plan for the = country.

In 2008,=20 Henretta received a U.S. State Department Appointment to serve as = one of=20 three U.S. representatives on the Business Advisory Council to = APEC (Asia=20 Pacific Economic Cooperation). She is a frequent speaker on a = range of=20 subjects ranging from leadership to work/life balance to = innovation and=20 brand building.

Henretta also holds a master=92s degree in=20 communications from Syracuse University. She lives in Singapore = with her=20 husband and three children, and is an active supporter of a number = of=20 charitable causes including Caring for Cambodia and Children=92s = Hospital of=20 Cincinnati. She has served on St. Bonaventure=92s Board of = Trustees, as well=20 as advisory boards at Syracuse and Xavier=20 universities.

Commencement activities begin Friday, May 14, = with=20 the traditional Candlelight Ceremony for graduating seniors, = followed by=20 the Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, May 15. Graduation ceremonies = begin at=20 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 16.

Olean civic leaders Marianne = and=20 Erick Laine, chairman emeritus of CUTCO Corp., will also receive = honorary=20 degrees.

Move Out Program gears up = for annual=20 collection and sale

As the semester winds down, it=92s time for the = annual Move=20 Out Program to gear up. The Move Out Program is an opportunity for = SBU=20 students to recycle and donate unwanted and gently used items to = the needy=20 in the area. Starting Friday, collection boxes will be placed in = all=20 residence halls and the Townhouses.

Items collected include clothing, food, carpets, = small=20 refrigerators, microwaves, computers, phones, answering machines, = radios,=20 CD players, irons and ironing boards, kitchen items and furniture. = Household items and furniture must be clean and in usable = condition.=20 Clothing and bedding must be clean and undamaged. Packages of food = must be=20 unopened and unused; perishables will not be accepted. Smaller = items can=20 be placed in a box in residence hall lounge areas.

A Dumpster has been placed by the Townhouses for = items that=20 are recyclable.

The sale of donated items will be held in the San = Damiano=20 Room this year. The sale will be open to the campus community on = Monday,=20 May 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 = p.m. and 5=20 to 9 p.m. The sale will be open to the public Wednesday, May 19, = and=20 Thursday, May 20, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The money collected from the sale of items = provides=20 scholarships for service-learning trips during the academic year.=20 Volunteers for the Move Out Program are welcome, too! Interested = faculty,=20 staff and students can contact Sr. Suzanne for details.

The title of his talk is = =93Saints=20 of The Cloisters in =91The Golden Legend.=92=94 Fr. Xavier also = has recently=20 published a chapter in the volume, =93Perspectives on Medieval = Art: Learning=20 Through Looking.=94 Fr. Xavier=92s chapter is titled =93Liturgical = Instruments=20 and the Placing of Presence.=94

Dr. Leigh A. Simone, assistant = professor of=20 modern languages, had her performance translation of Xavier = Villaurrutia=92s=20 =BFEn qu=E9 piensas? Published in volume 22 of =93The Dirty = Goat.=94 Simone's=20 translation had also received a bi-lingual staged reading by = Hispanics=20 United in Buffalo at the Irish Classical Theatre as well as having = been=20 performed by SBU Theater.
