Cyberbalance authors host presentation for local = school=20 counselors

Local area = school=20 counselors participated in an all-day workshop presented by St.=20 Bonaventure=92s School of Education on Friday, April 9. The Board = of=20 Trustees Room was full with an audience of approximately 20 = counselors as=20 Dr. Barbara Trolley, St. Bonaventure professor of education, and = Constance=20 Hanel, M.S.Ed; took the podium.

Their = presentation was=20 called =93Cyber Kids, Bullying and Balance: Assisting Youth to = Positively=20 Cope with Use and Misuse.=94 Trolley and Hanel have co-authored = several=20 books on the topic of cyberbullying and how to prevent and deal = with such=20 problems. Trolley and Hanel=92s presentation focused on kids who = misuse new=20 technologies. They claim such misuse is causing kids to become = obese,=20 become socially underdeveloped and allows kids to bully = others.

Kids who = bully others=20 online are both similar and different from traditional schoolyard = bullies.=20 They use the same intimidation tactics, but are not face-to-face = with the=20 person they are bullying. Trolley and Hanel say that the solution = and=20 prevention to such problems are education and balance. Parents, = children=20 and teachers all need to be better educated on the proper use and=20 potential threats of the Internet and other new technologies. = Children=20 need to become well versed with technology, but not at the expense = of=20 offline communication skills, they said, because it is never going = away.=20

The balancing = of time using=20 new technologies and activity monitoring are crucial elements of = cyber=20 bullying prevention. Trolley and Hanel presented for an hour. At = the=20 conclusion of their presentation they fielded questions from their = audience and stressed the importance of age appropriate use. =

1978 alum who co-authored = McVeigh=20 book and donated materials to SBU to be interviewed on MSNBC=20 special

Fifteen years after the Oklahoma = City bombing,=20 MSNBC=92s Rachel Maddow will bring viewers the inside story on the = deadliest=20 terror attack of the 20th century on U.S. soil.

The = two-hour=20 special airing at 9 p.m. Monday =97 called =93The McVeigh Tapes: = Confessions=20 of an American Terrorist=94 =97 includes excerpts from 45 hours of = never-before-released interview audiotapes recorded during Timothy = McVeigh=92s prison stay by Buffalo News reporters Dan Herbeck, SBU = class of=20 1978, and Lou Michel.

All of the original notes taken by = Herbeck=20 and Michel, and some letters written by McVeigh, were donated by = the=20 reporters to St. Bonaventure University=92s archives this year for = scholarly=20 research. Copies of their audiotapes are also housed in the = archives. The=20 film=92s closing credits will acknowledge the = university.

The=20 materials were the foundation of the reporters=92 book =93American = Terrorist:=20 Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing,=94 published in = 2001. The New=20 York Daily News called the book =93an important contribution to=20 history.=94

Herbeck and Michel are interviewed extensively = in the=20 film, which reveals the bomber=92s descriptions of the planning = and=20 execution of the horrific attack and offers insight into how a = decorated=20 American soldier became a dangerous, anti-government = terrorist.

The=20 two-hour documentary employs state-of-the-art computer recreations = of the=20 interview with McVeigh and his actions on and leading up to the = day of the=20 bombing. It also provides biographical background of McVeigh=92s = life and=20 the path that led to his transformation into an =93American=20 terrorist.=94

Survivors and family members of the bombing = victims=20 also are given a voice in the film, bravely stepping forward to = offer the=20 final word on the true impact and meaning of McVeigh=92s brutal = attack.

Painter and printmaker Constance Pierce is one = of 14=20 artists internationally to be chosen by guest curator Ryozo = Morishito to=20 exhibit in =93The 4th Art On Paper Exhibition 2010,=94 which = opened in March.=20 The exhibition was presented at the Museum of Modern Art in the = Toyota=20 City complex in Aichi, Japan.

The artist exhibited a new series of archetypal = figurative=20 works on paper that bear witness to the sufferings of the world. = Pierce is=20 not afraid to confront these images in all of their darkness and = light,=20 and embraces them for the revelations they provide about the human = soul.

This series of images was inspired by the last = spoken word=20 lines of a musical composition titled =93Will You Be There,=94 by = the late=20 performer, composer and humanitarian Michael Joseph Jackson. = =93The 4th Art=20 on Paper Exhibition 2010=94 was covered in televised news media in = Japan in=20 March.

Pierce, an associate professor of visual arts at = St.=20 Bonaventure University, is also showing her artwork regionally in = a solo=20 exhibition at the Clara Fritzsche Gallery located in the library = of Notre=20 Dame College of Ohio. The exhibition is titled =93Lacrymae Rerum:=20 Retrospective Works on Paper.=94 The show opened with a reception = for the=20 artist April 8 and will run through May 15, 2010.

Pierce is drawn toward the archetypal aspects of = the Judeo=20 Christian religious experience, but expresses these themes in a=20 contemporary idiom. She often works with images of pilgrimage,=20 lamentation, absolution and transcendence. Pierce uses such themes = to=20 flesh out parable, and to reveal the relevance of the ancient = stories to=20 our world of dissonance and division.

One series, executed in graphite and blue wash = and titled=20 =93Lamentations,=94 offers a visual meditation expressing the = haunting and=20 disturbing consequences of war. This series poses questions on = issues of=20 faith, tolerance and ethics.

Another series of drawings was informed by = images from=20 Dante=92s =93Divine Comedy.=94 A third series, done in watercolor, = expresses the=20 epiphany of the soul through dance. In addition, the artist is = exhibiting=20 a new portfolio of large-scale Giclee prints of her works, = published for=20 the first time in this format. The artist collaborated with Martin = Studios=20 of Olean to produce this series because of the studio=92s artistic = excellence in printing.

Pierce is associate professor of painting and = drawing at=20 St. Bonaventure University. She graduated from the Cleveland = Institute of=20 Art, where she was awarded the Helen Green Perry Prize for = European Travel=20 and Study. She received her advanced degree from the Hoffberger = School of=20 Painting of the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, = where she=20 studied with the renowned abstract expressionist painter Grace=20 Hartigan.

Her sketchbooks have been featured in two = exhibitions at=20 the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Her = monotypes=20 and sketchbooks are in the permanent collection of this museum, = and the=20 Archives of American Art of the Smithsonian Institution (D.C.), = the Rare=20 Books Library of the National Gallery of Art (D.C.), Georgetown = University=20 Special Collections (D.C.), the International Marion Research = Institute of=20 the University of Dayton (Ohio), the Yale Center for British Art: = Prints=20 and Drawings (sketchbook archives) and Yale University=92s =93Art = of the Book=94=20 Collection in Sterling Library (Conn.).
Her work has been = featured=20 through the years in articles and reviews in the Washington Post,=20 Chicago=92s New Art Examiner, the Sunday New York Times, the New = Haven=20 Register, the Yale Bulletin, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and IMAGE: = Art=20 Faith Mystery.

An article that Pierce authored titled =93OPUS = CORDIS:=20 Reflections of a Contemporary Artist Embracing the Drama of = Religious=20 Imagery=94 will be included in a new book, =93Art Inspiring = Transmutations of=20 Life,=94 Volume 106 of the Analecta Husserliana series, to be = published in=20 June 2010.

Barry=20 honored again as Pulitzer finalist

Dan Barry, a New York Times columnist and 1980 alumnus of St.=20 Bonaventure University, has once again been honored as a Pulitzer = Prize=20 finalist for feature writing. Barry was honored Monday for his = portfolio=20 of closely observed pieces that movingly capture how the recession = is=20 changing lives and relationships in America.

Gene Weingarten of The Washington Post won the feature writing = Pulitzer=20 for his haunting story about parents, from varying walks of life, = who=20 accidentally kill their children by forgetting them in cars. Barry = was=20 also a Pulitzer runnerup in 2006 for his rich series of pieces = capturing=20 slices of life in hurricane-battered New Orleans as well as his = own New=20 York City. A Lenna Endowed Visiting Professor at SBU in 2009, = Barry has=20 been on two reporting teams that have won Pulitzer Prizes.

In 1994, he and four other members of an investigative team for = the=20 Providence Journal-Bulletin won a Pulitzer for a series of = articles about=20 corruption in that state=92s court system. The series led to = widespread=20 judicial reform and to the criminal indictment of the state = Supreme Court=20 chief justice.

In 2002, Barry was a member of The New York Times team awarded = a=20 Pulitzer for coverage of the World Trade Center disaster and its=20 aftermath. Barry has written two books: =93Pull Me Up: A = Memoir,=94 which has=20 been favorably compared to Frank McCourt=92s best-selling = =93Angela=92s Ashes,=94=20 and =93City Lights: Stories About New York.=94 He has been = described by Lee=20 Coppola, dean of the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and = Mass=20 Communication, as =93the best pure writer=94 to come out of the = school=92s=20 60-year program. SBU has produced four other Pulitzer Prize = winners.

Laines to receive honorary degrees = at=20 Commencement

Two longtime Olean civic leaders will receive = honorary=20 degrees May 16 at St. Bonaventure University=92s 150th = Commencement=20 Exercises.

Marianne and Erick Laine, chairman emeritus of = CUTCO Corp.,=20 will receive honorary doctorates of humane letters.

=93I can=92t think of two people more worthy of = honoring than=20 Erick and Marianne. They=92ve given so much to the region, both = economically=20 and philanthropically,=94 said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., = university=20 president. Erick Laine had more than 22 years of technical and = managerial=20 assignments with the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) before = becoming=20 president of Alcas in 1977.

In 1982, Erick and three of his officers made a = management=20 buyout and Alcas became privately held with Erick as majority = owner.=20 (Alcas changed its name to CUTCO in 2009.) A former St. = Bonaventure=20 trustee, Erick received a bachelor=92s degree in civil engineering = from the=20 University of Wisconsin and furthered his studies at the graduate = schools=20 of business of The Ohio State University and University of Iowa. = He=92s had=20 numerous professional and industrial affiliations, including: = commissioner=20 of Cuba Lake District, trustee of Alfred University, member of the = Direct=20 Selling Education Foundation Board of Directors (including service = as=20 chair), and board seats with Greater Olean Area Chamber of = Commerce, Olean=20 General Hospital, and Community Bank. He has received several = awards for=20 his endeavors, including the Businessman of the Year Award, given = to=20 recognize achievements and community dedication of outstanding = business=20 leaders in the Olean area; and the Academy of Marketing = Science=92s=20 Distinguished Marketer of the Year, presented to a corporate CEO = who has=20 achieved personal and corporate marketing success. Marianne Laine, = a=20 native of Olean, earned bachelor=92s and master=92s degrees from = St.=20 Bonaventure.

After teaching secondary English for nine years = near=20 Rochester, she returned to Olean and began a long career of = volunteering=20 with various organizations. Marianne has been the Olean area=92s = biggest=20 supporter of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. = Bonaventure.=20 She was literally on the ground floor of its development in the = mid-1990s,=20 from helping to choose an architect to build the center to = chairing with=20 Erick the $1 million community capital campaign to help build = it.

She was named the inaugural chair of the Guild for = the Quick=20 Center in 2004.

=93Marianne was really among the first to support = the=20 conservation efforts of our Permanent Collection,=94 said Joseph = LoSchiavo,=20 associate vice president and executive director of the Quick = Center. =93She=20 has been a major supporter of everything at the Quick Center, = especially=20 our educational outreach programs.=94 In fact, not until Quick = Center=20 officials sat down and added up how much Marianne had given over = the years=20 did they realize how generous she has been. To honor her as the = =93quiet,=20 self-effacing backbone of all we do,=94 LoSchiavo said the West = Gallery in=20 the Quick Center will be renamed the Marianne Letro Laine Gallery = at a=20 private ceremony the afternoon of May 14.

=93It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to = recognize=20 her publicly and permanently,=94 LoSchiavo said. =93No one = deserves it more=20 than her.=94

Thorough the years, Marianne has served as an = officer and=20 board member of the Olean Camp Fire Council and the Friends of = Good Music;=20 volunteered at the Olean Public Library and the Olean General = Hospital;=20 and served on St. Bonaventure=92s National Alumni Board and the = advisory=20 board for WBFO, the region=92s National Public Radio affiliate. =

Commencement activities begin Friday, May 14, with = the=20 traditional Candlelight Ceremony for graduating seniors, followed = by the=20 Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, May 15. Lee Coppola, dean of the Russell J. = Jandoli=20 School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was a guest speaker = at a=20 daylong workshop of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association in = Harrisburg=20 April 8, 2010.

Darwin L. King, professor of = accounting, and=20 Edward D. King had an article titled =93Timber Pests and Resulting = Losses=94=20 published in the March 2010 issue of the Oil, Gas & Energy = Quarterly.=20 This article reviews the risks of timber ownership including a = number of=20 insect pests that threaten U.S. forests. In addition, the proper = tax=20 treatment of timber losses is discussed. This is the 24th article = King has=20 published in this journal that emphasizes accounting and taxation = topics=20 related to a variety of natural resources.

Dr. John Mulryan, Distinguished = Board of=20 Trustees Professor, gave a talk at the Renaissance Society of = America=20 meeting in Venice, Italy. The talk, which was delivered Thursday, = April=20 15, 2010, was titled =93Italian Mythographers of the Renaissance: = The=20 Venetian Connection.=94

Dr. Rodney Paul, professor of = economics in the=20 Department of Finance, had the paper =93The Determinants of = Betting Volume=20 for Sports in North America=94 accepted for publication in the = International=20 Journal of Sport Finance. The paper is scheduled to be published = in the=20 May 2010 issue of the journal. This paper stems from the original=20 presentation of the paper during the fall of 2009 at the First = European=20 Conference in Sport Economics in Paris, France. In addition, Paul = will=20 have a chapter published in the upcoming Oxford Handbook of Sports = Economics, published by Oxford University Press as part of the its = Handbook series on specific areas of new economic research. The = book=20 chapter, titled =93Behavioral Biases and Sportsbook Pricing in = Major League=20 Baseball,=94 focuses on the study of the Efficient Market = Hypothesis in=20 Wagering Markets for baseball.

Dr. Kimberly Young, professor of = management=20 sciences, had the article "Crafting an Organizational Model to = Combat=20 Employee Internet Abuse" published in Information Management. The = article=20 outlines various management approaches firms can utilize.
