Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks=92 by Rebecca Skloot is All =
Bonaventure=20
      Reads selection for 2010

Science reporter Rebecca Skloot=92s debut book, =93The Immortal =
Life of=20
      Henrietta Lacks,=94 has been chosen as the All Bonaventure Reads =
selection=20
      for 2010.

Skloot tells the enthralling story of Henrietta Lacks, the =
forgotten=20
      woman behind one of the most important tools in modern medicine, =
and of=20
      Lacks=92s descendants, many of whom feel betrayed by the =
scientific=20
      establishment.

Born in 1920 in Clover, Va., Henrietta Lacks was a poor tobacco =
farmer=20
      who worked the same land as her slave ancestors. In 1951, she =
developed a=20
      strangely aggressive cancer, and doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital =
took a=20
      tissue sample without her knowledge. She died without knowing that =
her=20
      cells would become immortal =97 the first to grow and survive =
indefinitely=20
      in culture.

HeLa cells, as they are called, were essential to developing =
the polio=20
      vaccine. They have aided in the development of in-vitro =
fertilization,=20
      cloning, and gene mapping, and have helped us to better understand =
the=20
      workings of cancer and innumerable viruses. Even today, HeLa is =
the most=20
      widely used cell line in labs worldwide, bought and sold by the =
billions.=20
      =93The Immortal Life=94 was selected by the All Bonaventure Reads =
Committee=20
      for the incoming class of 2014.

All first-year students are asked to read the annual All =
Bonaventure=20
      Reads text, which is the cornerstone of the University 101 course. =
Many=20
      other courses will adopt the text, and the entire campus community =
is=20
      invited to read the book.

Members of the All Bonaventure Reads 2010 are Mary Jo Brockel, =
Chris=20
      Brown, Nancy Casey, Eric Danielson, Jean Trevarton Ehman, Carol =
Fischer,=20
      Ann Lehman, Adriane Spencer, and Ann Tenglund.

=93The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks=94 took Skloot more =
than a decade=20
      to research and write. The book, published Feb. 2 by Crown, an =
imprint of=20
      Random House, debuted at No. 5 on the New York Times bestseller =
list Feb.=20
      21.

After learning about the HeLa cell line in high school, Skloot =
became=20
      consumed by curiosity about the woman behind the cells. She spent =
years=20
      winning the trust of Henrietta=92s daughter, Deborah, who longed =
to know=20
      more about her mother and to better understand the science behind =
her=20
      cells, which often seemed more like science fiction. Henrietta=92s =
husband=20
      and children did not find out about her =93immortality,=94 or the =
enormous=20
      profits her cells had generated, until more than 20 years after =
her death,=20
      when scientists investigating HeLa began using blood samples from =
her=20
      family in research without informed consent.

Skloot is a science writer whose work has appeared in The New =
York=20
      Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; Discover; Columbia =
Journalism=20
      Review; and many other publications. She has explored a wide range =
of=20
      topics, including goldfish surgery, tissue ownership rights, food=20
      politics, and the perils of packs of wild dogs in Manhattan, and =
her=20
      essays have been widely anthologized. She is also a contributing =
editor at=20
      Popular Science magazine, and has worked as a correspondent for =
NPR=92s=20
      RadioLab and PBS=92s Nova ScienceNOW. An excerpt from the book was =
published=20
      in the February 2010 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.

At summer freshman orientation, more than a month before =
she ever=20
      took a note in a St. Bonaventure classroom, Rachel George was =
pulled aside=20
      by Dr. Denny Wilkins, her adviser.

=93The highest =
award we have=20
      in journalism is the Hellinger. I expect you to win it,=94 Wilkins =

      recalled.

A product of Pioneer Central School=92s =
renowned=20
      journalism program, George did just that. The former BV sports =
editor,=20
      Times Herald intern and Associated Press stringer graduated with a =
3.8 GPA=20
      and was honored with the university=92s Hellinger Award in =
2006.
Four=20
      years later, George has added an even more impressive award to her =
trophy=20
      case. The Wilmington (N.C.) StarNews sports writer took first =
place in the=20
      2009 Associated Press Sports Editors Writing Contest in the highly =

      competitive Investigative category.

=93I=92m beyond =
excited=20
      getting the award. But I=92m so much prouder of the fact that we =
didn=92t have=20
      to write a story about four football players who died because the =
roof=20
      caved in,=94 George said.

George figured the odds =
were long=20
      that her entry would be honored. Investigative is the only APSE =
category=20
      open to newspapers of all circulations. The StarNews, circulation =
40,000,=20
      was up against writers from the Boston Globe, YahooSports, USA =
Today and=20
      New York Times.

Phil Kaplan from APSE phoned George =
at work=20
      April Fools=92 Day to inform her of the good news. Long past =
quitting=20
      time, she thought about not answering the =
phone.

=93When the=20
      finalists were named in early March, I guess I never realized =
there was a=20
      next step,=94 George said. =93Phil said, =91You=92re No. 1,=92 and =
then made some=20
      crack about it being like Butler winning the national title. My =
brain just=20
      couldn=92t process what he was saying. I was speechless. At one =
point he=20
      said, =91Are you still there?=92=94

Remarkably, SBU =
alum Adrian=20
      Wojnarowski, class of =9291, was among a team of four YahooSports =
reporters=20
      who took third place in the same category for their probe into =
alleged=20
      recruiting violations by UConn=92s men=92s basketball program. =
Longtime Times=20
      Herald sports editor Chuck Pollock, an adjunct instructor in =
SBU=92s=20
      journalism school, won first place for columns in the under-40,000 =

      circulation category.

George wrote a series of =
articles on=20
      New Hanover High School=92s Jap Davis Field House, which had been =
shut down=20
      in late 2007 because of structural concerns. School officials =
assured the=20
      newspaper that repairs were made before students and coaches =
started using=20
      it again in spring 2008.

A year later George was =
taken into=20
      a restricted area of the building where a beam that supports the =
roof was=20
      sagging significantly. She had a number of safety questions and =
started=20
      her investigation.

The first part of the story was =
published=20
      Aug. 1, 2009, a day after football practice=20
      started.

=93Clearly, it was a problem that the =
football players=20
      were going to be using an unsafe building,=94 George wrote in the =
cover=20
      letter submitted to APSE with her entry. =93The county inspections =

      department condemned the building before the start of practice =
because of=20
      my reporting. Alternate arrangements were made when the season =
started,=20
      and the players were kept out of danger.=94

George =
said the=20
      stories were built through a diligent investigation that ended up =
being=20
      more than 700 pages of documents and e-mail, and 20 hours of=20
      interviews.

StarNews sports editor Dan Spears knew =
from the=20
      beginning that George was a special talent.

=93Rachel =
has=20
      always been willing to push envelopes,=94 Spears said. =93She did =
a huge=20
      series on Title IX issues that has led to changes in sports =
programs in=20
      North Carolina. She has a persistence about her, a willingness to =
put=20
      herself on the line knowing things need to be =
fixed.=94

John=20
      Hanchette, who teaches in SBU=92s Jandoli School of Journalism and =
Mass=20
      Communication, knows something about investigative reporting; he =
won a=20
      Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1980 for his work on a series =
that=20
      unmasked a religious fundraising scandal and resulted in the =
return of=20
      several million dollars in lost invesments to elderly=20
      Catholics.

Hanchette saw the potential in George =
right=20
      away.

=93Even in JMC 101, Rachel was always =
concentrating,=20
      always questioning, always looking for the hard news angle,=94 =
Hanchette=20
      said. =93Sometimes we mull our consciences over in faculty =
meetings=20
      wondering if we are teaching an empty profession, so to hear news =
like=20
      this, especially when the impact of her reporting is so =
meaningful, is=20
      especially gratifying.=94

George said she heeds =
lessons from=20
      her Bonaventure education all the time.

=93I hear =
Hanch and=20
      Denny in my head all the time,=94 she said with a laugh. =93I =
spoke to some=20
      UNC-Wilmington students recently and told them three things: learn =
how to=20
      report a story, tell a story, and adapt a story. I learned that =
from=20
      them.=94=20
