published a new book on one of the bloodiest battles of the =

=93The Dark, Close Wood: The =
Wilderness, Ellwood,=20
      and the Battle that Redefined Both=94 tells the story of the =
Battle of the=20
      Wilderness, which took place May 5-7, 1864, in central =
Virginia=92s=20
      Spotsylvania County. The area was known as The Wilderness because =
it was=20
      sparsely settled and largely untamed.

=93The Battle of the Wilderness was =
particularly=20
      important because it was the first engagement between legendary=20
      Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the new commander of all =
Union=20
      armies, Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant,=94 Mackowski explains. =93In =
the=20
      Wilderness, the two armies fought each other to a standstill, but =
instead=20
      of retreating as all of his predecessors did, Grant found a way to =
push=20
      forward. He wanted to turn the Civil War into a war of attrition =
because=20
      he knew the South had fewer men and resources.=94

In previous battles, the two armies =
usually=20
      fought in open fields, which allowed large bodies of men room to =
maneuver.=20
      =93The Wilderness was a dense, scrubby, second-growth forest, =
which made it=20
      nearly impossible for soldiers to even see each other let alone =
move=20
      around,=94 Mackowski said. =93They=92d never seen anything like it =
before. One=20
      soldier said, =91A worse battlefield could not be =
imagined=92=97and he wasn=92t=20
      the only person to think so.=94

Mackowski also created five maps =
for the book,=20
      and he took a number of the modern-day photos featured in it. The =

      this battle,=94 said John Hennessy, chief historian at FSNMP and =

      the series. =93=91The Dark, Close Wood=92 is an important part of =
those new=20
      interpretive efforts. It=92ll give visitors a thorough, readable =

      what happened.=94 At 128 pages, the book is intended as something =

said.

=93There=92s a real focus on good =

      added. Mackowski also co-authored the first book in the series, =

Goodman has written for several national publications including =

from=20
      rare books to Big Oil to wine. Her first book is expected to be =

Goodman received her bachelor=92s degrees in journalism and =

of nine=20
      students nationwide selected for the real-time newswriting program =
of the=20
      Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

In 1997, Goodman was honored by the New York State Assembly for =

sponsored=20
      legislation. She is also a winner of the Dow Jones=92s William R. =
Clabby=20
      Award for outstanding journalism. Goodman was also nominated for=20
      Newswomen=92s Club of New York Front Page Award.

The Woman of Promise Award is presented to a student who, in =
the=20
      faculty=92s opinion, possesses all the skills necessary to not =
only succeed=20
      but thrive in her post-graduate career. Doneth has certainly lived =
up to=20
      these requirements.

Doneth began interning with St. Bonaventure=92s Sports =
Information=20
      Department her freshman year. Her on-campus internships also =
include SBU=92s=20
      radio station, 88.3-FM The Buzz, the First Year Experience Parent=20
      Newsletter and SBU-TV, where she is a reporter, anchor and =
producer.

Doneth was also a sports intern at WLNS-TV in Lansing, Mich., =
where she=20
      covered sports games and events such as the Detroit Lions. =
Internships did=20
      not consume all of Doneth=92s time; she also made time to give =
back to her=20
      community. Doneth participated in the SMART program, the YMCA=92s =
Kids Day=20
      and she also hosted children=92s basketball clinics with her team. =

Doneth is the daughter of Dan Doneth and Frencesca Knot of East =

      Lansing, Michigan. She has two brothers, Jon and Jason, and two =
sisters,=20
      Danielle and Alli.

The Woman of Promise Award is named in honor of Dr. Mary A. =
Hamilton, a=20
      retired associate professor of journalism and mass communication =
at St.=20
      Bonaventure. A 1959 Bona grad, Hamilton returned in 1982 as a =
faculty=20
      member and also served as chair of the then journalism department. =

Summary: Adolescent pregnancies within as well as =

and=20
