Accounting professor Dr. Carol Fischer, along =

proposal,=20
      =93Enhancing Global Awareness and Professionalism in Accounting =
Majors,=94 to=20
      PwC, a section 501(c)(3) public charity as part of the 2009 IFRS =
Ready=20
      Grant Program.

=93The =91call for proposals=92 came out early =
in the fall 2009=20
      semester, but the accounting department had been discussing how to =

      integrate international issues in the curriculum for quite a bit =
longer=20
      than that,=94 she said. =93In fact, we had just agreed at a =
meeting at the end=20
      of the spring 2009 semester to increase our international coverage =
in the=20
      financial accounting courses beginning in fall 2009.=94

Fischer said the program is meant to incorporate =

      international accounting topics across the curriculum. Fischer =
said she=20
      plans to work with Dr. Joe Coate and Dr. Susan Anders to update =
the=20
      curriculum in summer 2010.

In addition, they will develop plans to present=20
      international issues to all accounting majors through guest =
speakers and=20
      special events to develop their understanding of international =
business.=20
      =93From the students=92 perspective, developing a foundation in =
international=20
      accounting issues is critical because the U.S. is moving in the =
direction=20
      of adopting International Financial Reporting Standards in the =
near=20
      future,=94 Fischer said.

=93These standards have already been adopted by =
over 100=20
      countries, including those in the European Union. As business has =
become=20
      more global, it is increasingly important for future business=20
      professionals to develop an understanding of international =
issues.=94 PwC=20
      provided Fischer $30,000 for her project. Its Ready Grant Program =
awarded=20
      $250,000 to fund 15 proposals submitted by professors from more =
than 200=20
      colleges and universities each year.

=93Since we are one of only 15 schools across =
the country to=20
      be awarded this grant, it is a great honor and provides national=20
      recognition for our program,=94 Fischer said.

Fischer, Coate and Anders plan to work on =
developing plans=20
      for the program over the summer, implementing them for the =
2010-2011=20
      academic year. The money is designated for faculty release time, =
giving=20
      Fischer and her department impetus to block out substantial time =
over the=20
      summer to work on their project.

=93The grant enables us to forego other =
opportunities for=20
      summer projects and focus on the integration of international =
accounting=20
      in our curriculum,=94 Fischer said. While the grant gives Fischer =
a chance=20
      to focus on a specific project, it provides students an =
opportunity to=20
      expand their repertoire in a growing international field.

=93This grant will help us to be sure that SBU =
accounting=20
      students have the necessary background to be competitive in a =

      has selected the Campus Activities Board as the student =

      the month for January along with Ali Dykeman, CAB president and =
Resident=20
      Assistant, as the student leader of the month.

According to Jessica Schiefer, the =
graduate=20
      assistant for the Leadership Center, the organization of the month =
award=20
      was designed to recognize, empower and motivate more student =
leaders=20
      around campus for their hard work and dedication to extra =
curricular=20
      activities. They look for those who challenge the status quo, =
inspire=20
      positive action, empower others and consistently seek improvement =
within=20
      their respective organization.

In the end, they choose =
organizations that go=20
      above and beyond what is expected. While the decision is based on =
the=20
      above criteria in addition to the nominations, the overall =
decision is=20
      ultimately made by Schiefer and Steve Kuchera, the assistant =
director for=20
      the Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership.

The monthly award began last =
semester and the=20
      Leadership Center hopes to receive more student and staff =
participation in=20
      the future. Faculty, staff and students nominated the Campus =
Activities=20
      Board for the award as a result of the well planned and organized =
=93Welcome=20
      Back=94 activities that included: Step Afrika, Free Wing Night, =
Bona=92s Ice=20
      Skating Night and comedian Lee Camp. The Campus Activities Board =
is a club=20
      on campus committed to creating, planning and booking events on =
and off=20
      campus. CAB is comprised of three committees: off campus, =
performance and=20
      interactive. Each committee has members ranging from freshmen to =
seniors=20
      and each meet roughly two times a month.

To see success, CAB asks the =
student body to=20
      get involved and let them know which events they like and which =
they do=20
      not.

According to Dykeman, students =
often visit=20
      their Facebook page and write on their wall or send them messages =
with=20
      questions or ideas. CAB also uses surveys to pinpoint what type of =
events=20
      the students want to see on campus. While they like to have a =
variety of=20
      events, CAB has also found sticking with events that have worked =
in the=20
      past to be very successful. If a particular event worked well or =
had a=20
      good turn out, they plan to do it again.

Another way CAB finds success is =
putting plenty=20
      of time into researching events. Finding out what has worked for =
other=20
      schools and taking suggestions from students and faculty are two =
ways they=20
      do that. They also attend conferences held by the National =
Association for=20
      Campus Activities throughout the year where they get new ideas, =
see acts=20
      up close and make connections. =93CAB works really hard from the =
bottom up=20
      and it=92s great that we=92re being recognized,=94 said =
Dykeman.

=93Our committee members, executive =
board and our=20
      advisor put a lot of time and energy into researching, planning =
and=20
      helping to facilitate our events and sometimes even I lose track =
of how=20
      much time we put into it all.=94

This is Dykeman=92s first year as =
CAB president=20
      and she feels =93beyond fortunate=94 to have the position. She =

      that CAB wouldn=92t be half as successful without the dedication =
of their=20
      advisor, Steve Kuchera.

For the spring semester, CAB has =

      Knowledge, S.P.A.R.K., welcomes students and faculty of all faiths =
to come=20
      together in the Thomas Merton Center on Thursday nights to share =
life=20
      experiences.

Special guests are introduced each week to help start =
discussions about=20
      life and the sometimes-long journey some people take to find their =
place=20
      in the world.

=93Many of our speakers have shared how powerful and wonderful =
it is to=20

Rev. Dan=20
      McKee, who coordinates S.P.A.R.K.

=93For them it became an extremely helpful experience as they =
revisited=20
      what had shaped them.=94 S.P.A.R.K. is not just for the speakers =
to relive=20
      their journeys. It tries to be a place where students feel welcome =
to=20
      voice their fears about faith or share their life dream. =
Discussion=20
      usually varies among subjects such as faith or major issues =
students face=20
      each day.

Rev. McKee hopes that different speakers each week help =
students learn=20
      more about themselves. =93Perhaps you can share with me your =
experiences,=20
      helping in my discernment,=94 said Rev. McKee. =93Or I can offer =
experience=20
      which may help in forming your adventure.=94

Currently S.P.A.R.K. consists of about eight to 15 students a =
week to=20
      share in the discussion, but new members are always welcome. =
