A new club = is being=20 formed by faculty in the School of Business in response to a need=20 expressed in a survey of several hundred students of various = majors=20 wanting to know more about family owned business.

The = first meeting=20 of The Family Business Club will be on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 12:30 = p.m. in=20 Dresser Auditorium located in the John J. Murphy Professional = Building.=20 Carol Wittmeyer, assistant professor of management sciences, and = Don=20 Swanz, associate professor in the School of Business, along with = students=20 David DiNardo, =9210 and Pasquale Rago, =9210 decided to create = this club for=20 students to better understand aspects of family = businesses.

=93Family=20 controlled firms are the predominant ownership model for = businesses on the=20 planet, so all students interested in business should know about = family=20 firms because if they don=92t own one, they will work for one = and/or their=20 clients will be family firms,=94 said Wittmeyer.

The = goals of the=20 club are to bring together St. Bonaventure students who are in = family=20 firms as well as those who desire to start their own. The club = members=20 will provide high quality programming, networking opportunities = and other=20 resources to help students start or grow a business.

In = March, the=20 club members plan on taking a trip along with the Management Club = to visit=20 family firms in Boston, Mass. Also, they are arranging a local = trip to=20 visit alumni in family firms this semester.

The = group is=20 funded through the efforts of Carl Paladino, a St. Bonaventure = alumnus and=20 father of another alumnus, Patrick Paladino, who passed away last = year.=20 For this generous donation The Family Business Club has named the = fund=20 after Patrick to help similar efforts in his name.

Faculty and = Staff=20 members can still donate to the 2010 Faculty and Staff Campaign, = an annual=20 drive conducted by the Office of Annual Giving.

Seeking = $78,925 and,=20 more importantly, a 35 percent participation rate, the campaign = runs=20 through May and offers the university=92s faculty and staff the = opportunity=20 to give back to their students.

Donations = can be made=20 through payroll deduction, check (payable to St. Bonaventure), = credit=20 card, appreciated securities/bonds, bequests and life=20 insurance.

Restricted = donations=20 go toward a specific department, curriculum, scholarship or = endowment, and=20 unrestricted donations go toward areas in the University=92s = financial aid=20 with the greatest need.

Faculty and = staff can=20 choose either, as long as they donate, according to Andrea Bidell, = the=20 executive director for the Annual Fund.

=93Allowing = (faculty=20 and staff) to do unrestricted or restricted, and the number of = ways they=20 can give, we=92re trying to make it as easy as we can for them to = give back=20 to Bonaventure.=94

She said=20 participation rate means more to the campaign=92s success than the = dollar=20 amount, factoring in to how much other donors and companies decide = to=20 donate.

=93Participation is=20 really what=92s important to us,=94 she said. =93It=92s not the = amount of their=20 gift. It=92s the fact that they give.=94

Nine faulty = and staff=20 members =96 Elizabeth Cashing, Anne Ciolek, Mike Hoffman, Rob = Hurlburt,=20 Lauren Matz, David Matz, Jeffrey Peterson, Laura Peterson and Ann = Tenglund=20 =96 serve as co-chairs, purveyors of information regarding the=20 campaign.

The annual = fund=20 office also provides information through its Web site=20 (www.sbu.edu/facultyandstaffcampaign), in flyers, direct mail, = e-mail and=20 through messages posted on the Notice Board and Inside = Bona=92s.

Retired colonel, Duke business school professor = to address=20 leadership in SBU talk

Retired = Army Col.=20 Joseph LeBoeuf Jr., a professor of practice at Duke University=92s = Fuqua=20 School of Business, will present a talk on =93Courageous = Leadership=94 at 8=20 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Dresser Auditorium of the John J. Murphy = Professional Building at St. Bonaventure University.

The talk is = being=20 presented by the University=92s Center for Activities, Recreation = and=20 Leadership.

LeBoeuf = graduated=20 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1974 and spent 34 = years in=20 uniform. His last assignment was as a professor at West Point, = where he=20 also served as deputy head of the Behavioral Sciences and = Leadership=20 Department. He was intimately involved in building the leadership = and=20 leadership-development programs at the academy.

He was = hired by the=20 Fuqua School of Business in 2004 to teach leadership and = management in MBA=20 programs, work as a scholar in the Coach K Center of Leadership = and Ethics=20 (COLE), and serve as the senior mentor and faculty adviser to 36 = COLE=20 leadership fellows. He runs a five-day leader development = experience for=20 more than 400 second-year MBA students each year and teaches an=20 undergraduate course in the Hart Leadership Program at Duke=92s = Stanford=20 School of Public Policy.

LeBoeuf = recently=20 served as the lead consultant on a study of the Air Force = Academy=92s leader=20 and character development program. He also assisted on an Army = study of=20 the effectiveness of the leadership curriculum and = leader-development=20 process used by Reserve Officers=92 Training Corps (ROTC) programs = at more=20 than 250 university and college programs in the U.S.

LeBoeuf is = married to=20 retired Army Brig. Gen. Maureen Keenan LeBoeuf, an aviator and = former head=20 of the Department of Physical Education at West Point. Keenan = LeBoeuf, an=20 Olean native, is a 1976 graduate of St. Bonaventure and a member = of the=20 University=92s Board of Trustees.

Collection = of essays=20 on early Franciscanism by Fr. Michael Cusato published in=20 Italy

A = collection of=20 selected essays by Fr. Michael Cusato, O.F.M., director of the = Franciscan=20 Institute, dean of the School of Franciscan Studies and publisher = of=20 Franciscan Institute Publications, has been published in = Italy.

A = specialist of=20 medieval Franciscan history known for his innovative and = thought-provoking=20 readings of the texts of Franciscan history, he has written = numerous=20 articles on the subject. This volume, =93The Early Franciscan = Movement=20 (1205-1239); History, Sources and Hermeneutics,=94 is a sampling = of his=20 essays on early Franciscanism.

At the = heart of the=20 struggles and tensions within the early Franciscan movement, = contending=20 narratives vied with each other for a hearing and a following = within=20 medieval Franciscan history.

That = struggle was=20 essentially between two different visions of Franciscan life. The = earlier=20 minorite vision of Franciscan life was sensitive to and critical = of the=20 socio-economic realities operative in the Spoleto Valley at the = turn of=20 the 13th century; these friars desired to live with and be at the = service=20 of the minores of their time.

Another = vision=20 preferred a more institutionalized form of the charism, stressing = the=20 apostolic (and predominantly clerical) usefulness of the = Franciscan order=20 to Church and society through the excellence of its preaching, = acuity of=20 its learning and radicality of its asceticism. These two versions = of the=20 Franciscan charism, while complementary expressions of the vision = of=20 Francis, were not easily reconcilable or compatible with each = other. Both=20 represented spiritual visions; but the social formation and = location of=20 the friars from which each of these visions originated were not = the same,=20 thus conditioning their contrasting perspectives on the forma = vitae and=20 explaining at least some of the differences and resulting=20 struggles.

This volume = gathers=20 together and updates previously published essays on topics related = to the=20 contested story of early Franciscan history (1205-1239), treating = subjects=20 such as the Franciscan approach to power and authority, the = attitude of=20 Francis toward Islam and the Crusades, the Privilege of Poverty, = the=20 connection between the two versions of the Epistola ad fideles, = the=20 relationship between the chartula and stigmata of Francis, the = centrality=20 of the Sacrum commercium, and the fall from grace of Elias of=20 Cortona.
