President of Northern Ireland college to visit SBU, = reflect=20 on what it means to lead a Catholic university in his=20 country

The Father = Mychal=20 Judge Center at St. Bonaventure University will host the president = of a=20 Northern Ireland college the week of Feb. 14 as the two = institutions=20 deepen their relationship and discuss opportunities for=20 collaboration.

As part of = his visit=20 to St. Bonaventure, Peter Finn, president of St. Mary=92s = University=20 College, Belfast, will give an open lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, = Feb. 16, in=20 the amphitheater of the William F. Walsh Science Center. The topic = of his=20 address will be =93Reflections on Leadership of a Catholic Higher = Education=20 College in Northern Ireland.=94

Throughout = the week,=20 Finn will meet with St. Bonaventure faculty and staff who are = working to=20 develop relationships, research projects, and curricular = connections to=20 St. Mary=92s UC. Last June, a group from Bona=92s traveled to = Northern Ireland=20 to develop contacts at St. Mary=92s UC and Queen=92s University, = among other=20 entities.

The new = Mychal Judge=20 Center will offer an innovative cross-cultural experience as it = enables=20 students, faculty and cultural exchanges in the Republic of = Ireland,=20 Northern Ireland and the United States.

=93When I = began=20 exploring potential partnerships in Ireland, one of my first = conversations=20 was with Peter Finn,=94 said Larry Sorokes, director of the Mychal = Judge=20 Center. =93We=92ve had many discussions on the significance of the = Irish=20 reconciliation, the common challenges we face as Catholic higher = education=20 institutions, and the importance of providing our students with = rewarding=20 international experiences. As I considered possible speakers for = the Fr.=20 Mychal Judge Center, I hoped that Peter could be among the first. = We=92re=20 excited to welcome him and his family to campus.=94

Appointed = head of the=20 college in 2008, Finn has been responsible for a number of = innovative=20 developments at the institution, which will celebrate 110 years = this=20 September. During the 1990s he was instrumental in setting St. = Mary=92s down=20 the road of internationalization through the EU Erasmus=20 program.

In 2000, he = established a bachelor=92s degree in liberal arts that was modeled = on his=20 experience of liberal arts colleges in the United States. In = recent years=20 he has been responsible for academic and administrative = restructuring=20 designed to enable the college to respond in a flexible way to new = and=20 developing circumstances. His research interests are in the role = of=20 institutional ethos in improvement and high = performance.

Finn=92s = work at St=20 Mary=92s connects him primarily to education in Northern Ireland = as the=20 college=92s main role is still in teacher education, but he also = emphasizes=20 developing links with the college=92s local business and political = community. The recent National Student Survey in the UK placed St. = Mary=92s=20 tied for fourth place in student satisfaction among more than 160=20 universities in the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern=20 Ireland.

In 2009, = Finn was=20 appointed by the Minister for Employment and Learning in Northern = Ireland=20 to an Expert Group on the International Dimension in Higher = Education and=20 he also serves on the UK Erasmus Committee of the British=20 Council.

Background on=20 the Father Mychal Judge Center for Irish Exchange and=20 Understanding

In = establishing this=20 center, St. Bonaventure recognized the strong Irish heritage of = its=20 founder, Nicholas Devereux, the centuries-old and significant=20 contributions of the Franciscan friars in Ireland, and the = university=92s=20 long-standing commitment to servant leadership and social=20 entrepreneurship.

Fr. Mychal = Judge,=20 O.F.M., was famous for the many ways in which he was committed to = serving=20 the poor, friendless, and disenfranchised. He was a counselor, = pastor,=20 fire chaplain, and peacemaker, and his work focused on the = promotion of=20 reconciliation, whether in addressing the AIDS crisis of the 1980s = or the=20 Irish peace process of the 1990s. Fr. Mychal died a hero=92s death = on Sept.=20 11, 2001, while serving as chaplain to New York City firefighters = at the=20 World Trade Center.

Fr. Mychal = was a=20 graduate of St. Bonaventure and a former administrator at Siena = College in=20 Albany.

Bring your valentine to 'A Night at The Operetta' = at St.=20 Bonaventure's Quick Center

Soprano = Virginia=20 Herrera and baritone Michael Weyandt will perform duets and love = songs=20 from Viennese, French, Spanish and American operettas at 7:30 p.m. = on=20 Friday, Feb. 12, in the sixth concert of the Friends of Good Music = season=20 at St. Bonaventure University=92s Regina A. Quick Center for the=20 Arts.

Weyandt won the = Quick=20 Center for the Arts Performance Prize at the 2009 Liederkranz = Competition=20 in New York.

Accompaniment will be=20 provided by pianist Elizabeth Hastings and the concert will be = narrated by=20 Joseph A. LoSchiavo, executive director of the Quick Center. =

Operetta is = a genre=20 of light opera =96 light in terms of music and subject matter =96 = and=20 characteristically has a romantic plot interspersed with songs and = spoken=20 dialogue.=20

It originated in the middle of the 19th century in France, = where=20 Jacques Offenbach was the most successful practitioner of the = genre, and=20 came to its height in Vienna with the immensely popular works by = Johann=20 Strauss and Franz Lehar. At the same time, it found similar = popularity in=20 Spain where was known as Zarzuela and became a very sought after = form of=20 entertainment.

The operetta = traditions of=20 Austria, France and Spain began to wane in the early 20th century = but=20 found new life in the United States in the works of Victor Herbert = and=20 Sigmund Romberg, eventually making the transition from operetta to = musical=20 comedy.

LoSchiavo = will guide=20 the audience through the evening, explaining the settings of the = works=20 being performed and providing background information about the = composers=20 and the different performance styles. A noted opera stage = director,=20 LoSchiavo has directed productions for the New York City Opera = National=20 Company, the Kentucky Opera, the Arizona Opera, Wolf Trap Festival = in=20 Washington, D.C., and many others.

Herrera is = a strong=20 proponent of Zarzuela and has performed many roles in this genre = with=20 Teatro Nuevo Mexico in Santa Fe and in her native Mexico. She has = appeared=20 on many opera stages around the United States and starred in the = concert=20 =93The Best of German Opera and Operetta=94 at Weill Recital Hall = of Carnegie=20 Hall. Herrera=92s voice is featured in the soundtrack of the = Mexican short=20 film =93Under the Rubble,=94 which was nominated for best short = film at the=20 2006 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

Weyandt was = described=20 by the Boston Globe as a voice =93bright and clean=94 for his = recent=20 performances as Masetto in the Tanglewood Music Center=92s = production of=20 =93Don Giovanni,=94 under the baton of James Levine. He has = previously sung=20 the role of Guglielmo in =93Cosi fan tutte=94 at Tanglewood, again = with=20 Maestro Levine, in addition to numerous baritone roles at Indiana=20 University, where he received his master=92s degree.

Pianist = Hastings=20 returns to the Quick Center for her fifth appearance after = conducting the=20 very successful performances of the opera double bill =93The Three = Hermits=94=20 and =93Hester Prynne at Death=94 by Stephen Paulus in 2008. She is = the music=20 director of the Liederkranz Foundation and Opera Theatre and has = guest=20 conducted at many opera companies. She is also a sought after = coach and=20 accompanist in New York City.

Ludwig = Brunner,=20 director of programming at the Quick Center, said the concert is a = great=20 lead in to Valentine=92s Day, which is just two days later. = =93Since most of=20 these operettas are about love, the pursuit of love, or unrequited = love=20 and feature songs such as =91Ich bin verliebt=92 (=91I=92m So In = Love=92) by Lehar=20 or the popular duet =91Wanting You=92 by Romberg, this will be the = perfect=20 occasion to bring your spouse, partner, or a date and revel in the = romance=20 of the music,=94 said Brunner.

This = performance is=20 supported in part by the New York State Council on the = Arts.

VITA sets up tax shop again at Olean=20 mall

The Bonaventure = Accounting=20 Association and Students In Free Enterprise are teaming up again = to offer=20 free tax services this season for those who = qualify.

The St. Bonaventure = University=20 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program officially opens = its tax=20 preparation site at the Olean Center Mall on Monday, Feb. 1. The = office is=20 located near Subway and JCPenney, and will remain open until the = end of=20 March. The St. Bonaventure VITA site is an innovative, high-volume = program=20 that operates on an appointment basis, and has the capacity to = prepare=20 over 100 tax returns per week during =93tax season=94 = 2010.

Operating = hours are=20 Monday through Friday at the Olean Center Mall, with morning, = afternoon,=20 and evening appointment times available.

On = Saturdays in=20 February, volunteers will be at the Franklinville Elementary = School on=20 Feb. 6; at the Little Valley office of the Business Development=20 Corporation on Feb. 13; and at the Randolph Free Library on Feb. = 20. The=20 Saturday hours of operation are 1-3 p.m., and interested persons = are=20 encouraged to call 2-1-1 or (716) 373-0123 to see if they=20 qualify.

To qualify = for free=20 tax return preparation and electronic filing, Cattaraugus County = workers=20 must have a family income of $49,000 or less. Candidates will go = through=20 an entrance interview to see whether they qualify for free = assistance.=20 Those who qualify must bring a valid picture I.D., Social Security = cards,=20 all W-2 forms, and Forms 1099 to their tax preparation=20 appointment.

Since 2004, = the=20 University=92s VITA program has brought federal and state income = tax=20 benefits to people with low and moderate incomes by providing free = income=20 tax preparation and e-filing. The program focuses on workers who = are=20 eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a refundable tax credit = available to low- and moderate-income workers with earned=20 income.

VITA = students set a=20 new record in 2009, preparing 500 tax returns with $750,000 in tax = refunds=20 for local taxpayers, an almost 25 percent increase from 2008. = Since 2004,=20 VITA has helped Cattaraugus County residents earn $2.35 million in = tax=20 refunds, and prepared 1,500 tax returns.

Accounting = majors and=20 alumni from St. Bonaventure University volunteer to make the = program=20 possible under the leadership of Dr. Susan Anders, professor of = accounting=20 and adviser for the VITA program. Volunteer tax preparers engage = in many=20 hours of training and must pass rigorous IRS certification tests. = For=20 2010, 75 percent of the volunteer tax preparers are certified at = the=20 advanced level.

The St. = Bonaventure=20 VITA program operates in partnership with the Cattaraugus County=20 Department of Social Services and the United Way of Cattaraugus = County,=20 which provide resources for the activity.

The = Bonaventure=20 Accounting Association provides around 40 volunteer student tax = preparers=20 each year, along with experienced alumni and friends of the = university.=20 SIFE students handle the marketing and promotions for VITA, as = well as=20 client screening and booking appointments.

More than = 100 SBU=20 students help raise approximately $5,400 for = Haiti

More than = 100 St.=20 Bonaventure University students braved freezing temperatures = Friday=20 morning and teamed up with city of Olean firefighters in a boot = drive that=20 raised approximately $5,400 for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Students = and=20 firefighters were positioned at busy intersections in the city, = holding=20 out fire boots to accept donations from passing = motorists.

"It = went real=20 well; it was darn cold, but it went well," said Dr. Todd Palmer, = adviser=20 for SBU=92s Students in Free Enterprise, which co-sponsored the = event along=20 with BonaResponds, University Ministries, and SBU's Center for = Community=20 Engagement.

"We had a = group of=20 students who worked feverishly the past five days, recruiting = students and=20 coordinating activities with Olean firefighters," said = Palmer.

All the = money=20 raised will go toward Haitian relief efforts, including Food for = the Poor,=20 Hands on Direct Relief, the Carroll County Haiti Mission Project, = and any=20 direct-service opportunities SIFE, BonaResponds and other groups = are able=20 to coordinate at a later date.

SBU offering counseling sessions to area=20 families

The St. = Bonaventure=20 Counseling Clinic will be offering group and individual therapy = sessions=20 to the surrounding community.

The Family = Behavior=20 Group sessions will focus on families who have a child recognized = as=20 having behavioral and/or emotional problems. Parents will learn to = better=20 understand emotional and behavioral disorders, and their effects = on the=20 family, and share experiences in a supportive group setting while = going=20 through educational and community systems.

Siblings = will be=20 taught to cope with and normalize situations that result from = having a=20 sibling with an emotional and behavioral disorder. Siblings will = also=20 share experiences with others in a group setting.

Identified = children=20 will practice problem solving, social and self-control skills = while=20 working in a structured environment.

The = counseling=20 clinic=92s Wellness Group will teach families healthy physical = activity and=20 nutrition habits. Topics include nutrition, physical activity, = eating=20 habits and healthy lifestyle changes.

Both group = sessions=20 begin on Feb. 16 and run through April 27.

Individual, = one-on-one counseling sessions are currently running through April = 27.

=93The = Counseling=20 Clinic is here to help the community become mentally healthy,=94 = said Dr.=20 Mary Adekson, associate professor of counselor = education.

All therapy = sessions=20 are 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The counseling = clinic is=20 located on the first floor of Plassman Hall. Maximum donations of = $100 are=20 accepted, but not mandatory.

ISBU Trustee Emeritus Robert R. Jones = elected 2010=20 chair of the Board of the National Association of Home=20 Builders

St. = Bonaventure=20 University Trustee Emeritus Robert R. Jones of Bloomfield Hills, = Mich.,=20 was elected 2010 chair of the Board of the National Association of = Home=20 Builders (NAHB) during the International Builders Show, which took = place=20 Jan. 19-22 in Las Vegas.

=93It is an = honor to=20 represent the industry I have been a member of for more than 35 = years,=94=20 said Jones. =93I look forward to working with my fellow board = members in=20 advancing policies that will help move homebuilding toward greater = prosperity in the next year.=94

Jones, the = president=20 of Robert R. Jones Homes, specializes in land development and the = design=20 and construction of single-family luxury homes throughout = southeastern=20 Michigan. During his career, he has earned a reputation for = excellence and=20 established a continuing commitment to the homebuilding industry = at the=20 local, state and national levels. Jones is also a Certified Green=20 Professional (CGP) as well as a Certified Graduate Builder=20 (CGB).

Jones, a = 1958=20 graduate of St. Bonaventure, has a long, distinguished history of = service=20 to his alma mater. Named the = Alumnus of=20 the Year in 1978, he was awarded an honorary degree in 1989, = received the=20 St. Francis Medal in 1999, and the Robert R. Jones Board of = Trustees Room=20 was dedicated in his honor for his service to the = University.
