Fr. = Calabria, a=20 Franciscan friar, is a lecturer in Arabic and Islamic studies at = the=20 university. He holds degrees in Near Eastern Studies, Egyptology = and=20 Theology. He has traveled to the Middle East many times and = teaches at an=20 Egyptian seminary during the summer.

JCC and the = Olean=20 Public Library will sponsor the talk, which is part of their = Community=20 Reads Project. This year=92s is =93The Kite Runner,=94 a story of = two boys in=20 Afghanistan, one of a prominent and wealthy family and one of a = shunned=20 ethnic minority, who become friends during the final days of the = monarchy=20 to the present.

St. = Bonaventure=20 University students will team up with area firefighters Friday = morning for=20 a boot drive to raise money for devastated Haiti.

Students = and=20 firefighters will be stationed at busy intersections in the Olean = area=20 from 7 until 10 a.m. Friday.

All the = money raised=20 will go toward Haitian relief efforts, including Food for the = Poor, Hands=20 on Direct Relief and the Carroll County Haiti Mission Project, = said Dr.=20 Todd Palmer, adviser for SBU=92s Students in Free = Enterprise.

=93St. = Bonaventure has=20 a history of working with local firefighters,=94 Palmer said. = =93We raised=20 $45,000 during a boot drive after Hurricane = Katrina.=94

The boot drive is co-sponsored at the=20 university by SIFE, BonaResponds, University Ministries, and the = Center=20 for Community Engagement.

Since 2005, = BonaResponds and SIFE have been actively involved in local, = national and=20 international disaster relief efforts.

The massive = earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12 reduced much of the = capital city=20 of Port-au-Prince to rubble and killed an estimated 150,000=20 people.

St. = Bonaventure=20 University has joined the worldwide effort to help. Through the=20 consolidated efforts of SBU offices and organizations, St. = Bonaventure=20 students and staff have organized collections for money, personal = care=20 items and other supplies desperately needed by the Haitian=20 people.

Five=20 First Responses
Ways in which the St. Bonaventure has = helped=20 or is planning to help the Haiti relief effort:

Collection=20 for Food For The Poor organized by University Ministries, = Sunday,=20 Jan. 23.

Boot=20 Drive, Friday, Jan. 29, 7-10 a.m. Students in Free = Enterprise and=20 local volunteer firefighters will be out in the community = collecting cash=20 donations.Ten volunteers are needed for each collection point. = Additional=20 sign holders are needed to raise awareness along the collection = routes.=20
Collection drop site to be set up in Hopkins Hall.

50=20 Minutes Haiti. This multi-media educational piece is = being=20 developed to introduce the campus community to Haiti =96 the = country, the=20 people and the impact of the disaster. The purpose of the material = is to=20 provide a focused effort to help the campus community get a sense = of the=20 situation in Haiti. It will include a 10-minute reflection = component.=20 Project Coordinator is Larry Sorokes, director of the Center for = Community=20 Engagement.

Direct=20 Service: BonaResponds will explore opportunities for = direct=20 involvement in a variety of relief-related efforts. As health and = safety=20 concerns in Haiti are stabilized, and volunteer opportunities = open, a=20 service trip(s) to Haiti could be organized.

AmeriCorps=20 Cattaraugus County, Jan. 25-Feb 3.
The organization = Mission=20 Central of Mechanicsburg, Pa., will send a truck to Olean to = collect=20 supplies that have been donated and boxed (e.g., hand towels, = washcloths,=20 bath-size soap, combs, toothbrushes and other personal care = products that=20 can be distributed).
Donate items at the Center for Community=20 Engagement in Merton Center.
Volunteer to pack items for = AmericCorps=20 through Larry Sorokes at the CCE.

Dr. Paula Scraba in = the School=20 of Education has had a chapter in the book =93Service-Learning in = Physical=20 Education and Related Professions: A Global Perspective=94 = published. The=20 chapter, =93Service-Learning in Physical Education and Activity: = Blending=20 Social Responsibility,=94 was co-edited by Dr. Marybeth Miller, = former chair=20 of SBU=92s Department of Physical Education, and Jim Nendel.
