Vito Czyz = is the new=20 director of Safety and Security at St. Bonaventure = University.

Czyz = (pronounced=20 =93chez=94) began his duties Jan. 18. He has been a security = manager at=20 Motorola Inc. (1997-2006) and Continental Automotive Systems = (2006-2009),=20 both located in Elma, for the past 13 years. He was also security = manager=20 at Westinghouse Electric Corp. in West Valley from = 1987-1997.

=93I am = confident Vito=20 is exactly the right person to successfully lead our Office of = Safety and=20 Security into the future,=94 said Rick Trietley, vice provost for = Student=20 Life.

A 20-year = member of=20 the United States Army, Czyz earned his bachelor=92s degree in = business=20 administration from Buffalo State and has completed a number of = security=20 and management programs.

=93I am = truly looking=20 forward to becoming a part of the St. Bonaventure family,=94 Czyz = said.=20 =93This is a great opportunity for me to make a difference in = doing what I=20 have enjoyed as a profession for 23 years. =85 I will spend my = initial weeks=20 gaining an appreciation for the culture and history of St. = Bonaventure and=20 trying to meet as many of the staff, administration, faculty and = students=20 as possible.=94

Czyz takes = over for=20 Joe Stomieroski, who served as interim security director for the = last nine=20 months.

St. = Bonaventure=20 University is now a member of Campus Compact, a national coalition = composed of more than 1,100 colleges and universities dedicated to = promoting community service, civic engagement and service learning = in=20 higher education.

Larry = Sorokes,=20 associate vice president for Franciscan Mission and director of = the Center=20 for Community Engagement, said Campus Compact membership will = enhance=20 grant opportunities and provide tools to improve the = university=92s service=20 programming.

With 35 = state offices=20 located around the country, Campus Compact is able to give local = and=20 regional support to members. State offices offer more than $10 = million a=20 year in scholarships and postsecondary aid for students involved = in=20 service; the New York office is located at Cornell = University.

Campus = Compact will=20 also provide workshops, conferences and service projects for = university=20 faculty members, who will have access to tools for building = effective=20 service projects, hands-on tools such as sample syllabi, = curriculum guides=20 and handbooks.

Campus = Compact can=20 help showcase nationally the service work done at St. Bonaventure = through=20 awards, monographs, newsletters and publicity initiatives. =

In = addition, Campus=20 Compact acts as a strong collective voice to help influence = legislation in=20 regards to higher learning.

=93The = partnership will=20 help the University better use resources, which was the main = reason to=20 join,=94 Sorokes said. =93Service has always been an important = part of a=20 Bonaventure education, and this new partnership will increase and = improve=20 our ability to collaborate with other like-minded schools and=20 agencies.=94

Campus = Compact aims=20 to develop students=92 citizenship skills, help campuses forge = effective=20 communication partnerships and provides resources and training for = faculty=20 seeking to integrate civic and community-based learning into their = curriculum.

Students at = Campus=20 Compact schools contribute more than $5.7 billion and 282 hours in = service=20 each year through campus programs that address literacy, health = care,=20 homelessness, hunger and the environment.

Dr. Barbara = Trolley,=20 professor of counselor education in St. Bonaventure University=92s = School of=20 Education, has published two new books. These will be her fourth = and fifth=20 published books.

=93Cyber = Bullying,=20 Cyber Kids, Cyber Balance=94 was published by Corwin Press and = released on=20 Dec. 8, 2009. The book=92s goal is to educate readers on the = causes of cyber=20 bullying and how to prevent such bullying from happening, said = Trolley.=20 Another crucial focus of the book is prevention by establishing=20 cyberbalance within families and schools.

Trolley = believes=20 cyber bullying is a problem that has recently received more = attention even=20 though it has been around for a while. A message of this book is = to assist=20 people to employ more assessment and therapeutic methods when = dealing with=20 cyber bullies, and not just hand out harsh punishments that = don=92t address=20 the reasoning behind the action, she said.

Enjoying = cyberspace=20 is a privilege that most teens mistake as a right, Trolley said. = She knows=20 it is not uncommon for children and teenagers to know more than = their=20 parents when it comes to new technologies, but it is possible for = them to=20 teach each other.

She does = not believe=20 technology is bad; the concern is how much people tend to use and = abuse=20 it, Trolley said.

Trolley = emphasized=20 the importance of the balance of time both in and out of = cyberspace. She=20 hopes that after reading her book people will not only be educated = in the=20 appropriate action when handling cyber bullies, but how to prevent = occurrences from happening in the first place.

Her second = new book=20 is titled =93Browser the Mouse and his Internet Adventure.=94 This = book is=20 being published by Youthlight and is set to be released in January = 2010.

This might = be a=20 different genre of book from Trolley=92s previous works, but the = motives=20 remain the same: education. It=92s a book for young children and = she hopes=20 they will learn about the importance of balancing the use of the=20 Internet.

Trolley = believes new=20 technologies may be hindering children=92s social growth and = family=20 interaction. After reading the book, she hopes parents and their = children=20 alike will recognize the importance of time spent on and off the=20 Internet.

This book = comes with=20 activities and discussion questions for children, parents and=20 teachers.

These two = books gave=20 Trolley the opportunity to work with SBU alumnae Connie Hanel and = Linda=20 Shield again. The three have teamed up before to write books on = the topic=20 of cyber bullying.

Photographs by the famed Inge Morath on = view at St.=20 Bonaventure's Quick Center

Eighteen = photographs=20 by the late photojournalist Inge Morath are on view through Feb. = 14 at St.=20 Bonaventure University=92s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. = The=20 photographs are on loan from a private collection.

The = Austrian-born=20 Morath, a gifted writer, discovered her talents as a photographer = almost=20 by accident. In 1949, she joined the newly founded Magnum Photos = as an=20 editor and became fascinated with the art of photography. She = began=20 photographing independently in London in 1951 and was asked to = join Magnum=20 as a photographer in 1953. She would stay with the agency for 50=20 years.

Morath = traveled=20 extensively for Magnum, covering assignments in Europe, the Middle = East,=20 Africa, the United States and South America. She also worked as a = still=20 photographer on numerous motion picture sets and her portraits of = Marilyn=20 Monroe, although not in this exhibition, are among the most = graceful=20 images of the late actress.

Morath = married=20 American playwright Arthur Miller in 1964 and they settled in New = York and=20 Connecticut. Most of the photographs in the Quick Center=92s = exhibition were=20 taken by Morath in the small Connecticut town where they raised a = family=20 in the 1960s and 1970s.

Some of = Morath=92s=20 greatest achievements are in portraiture, including celebrities = and=20 anonymous people. She continued to travel and publish photographic = essays=20 until her death in 2002 at the age of 79. She was considered a = visual=20 anthropologist and documented subjects ranging from politics and = religion=20 to work and business.

Morath = devoted=20 much of her energy to encouraging women photographers. The Inge = Morath=20 Foundation, established in 2003 to facilitate the study and = appreciation=20 of Morath=92s contribution to photography, annually presents the = Inge Morath=20 Award to a female documentary photographer or photojournalist = under the=20 age of 30.

The = Quick Center=20 is open to the public at no charge. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 = p.m.=20 Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and=20 Sunday.
