International Education Week slated for Nov.=20 15-20

St. Bonaventure University will join = colleges and=20 universities around the nation celebrating International Education = Week=20 next week, Nov. 15-20.

Former = President=20 Bill Clinton inaugurated the first International Education Week in = 2000 to=20 be celebrated the third week in November. The focus of events = worldwide=20 and on U.S. campuses during this week will be to highlight = international=20 education at U.S. colleges and universities, both in the arena of=20 international students pursuing academic programs in America and = overseas=20 academic opportunities for American students to study = abroad.

This = year=92s=20 events at St. Bonaventure will highlight several accomplishments = the=20 university has realized this past year, including a new study = abroad=20 option for students at Queen=92s University, Belfast, Northern = Ireland,=20 through linkages made by St. Bonaventure's Father Mychal Judge = Center. The=20 University also welcomed 19 new international students this year,=20 including the first Northern Ireland exchange student through a = new=20 institutional agreement with the British Council.

The = annual study=20 abroad fair is planned for Nov. 17 and 18. Traditionally, study = abroad=20 alumni staff tables in the Reilly Center lobby and share their = overseas=20 experiences with students. This has become a major focal point for = students to have an opportunity to see the numbers of overseas = academic=20 programs available. SBU students now have access to more than 60 = approved=20 sites for short-term and semester study overseas.

Watch = the Notice=20 Board for specific details, dates and times for the week=92s = events. Also,=20 during the month of November, international =93Fascinating = Facts=94 will be=20 posted to highlight campus and beyond information about the field = of=20 international education.

Scholarship=20 recipients will be announced for spring 2010 programs during the = week of=20 Nov. 16: two Bond University, Australia, tuition awards will be = available=20 for SBU overseas academic programs next semester, along with a = CCIS=20 scholarship for the SBU program in Seville, Spain. Several = students have=20 also applied for the Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, federal grants=20 designated for semester study abroad.

A = workshop for=20 students who have or will study abroad will be offered in = collaboration=20 with the Career Center on Nov. 18. =93Marketing Your Study Abroad=20 Experience=94 will present ways for students to highlight their = overseas=20 academic experiences on resumes and in interviews.

A = workshop for=20 international students preparing for internships will be held on = Nov. 19,=20 guiding students through the legal and professional considerations = needed=20 to find practica in their academic fields.

Looking = ahead,=20 achievements coming from the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad = Foundation=20 Act, approved by Congress in June 2009, will include innovative = new=20 programs that will enhance U.S. capacity to engage with the world. = And,=20 additional funding for the Benjamin A. Gilman International = Scholarships=20 to encourage STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) = students to=20 study abroad will continue to have a direct positive impact on SBU = students looking for government funding for study = abroad.

Dresser-Rand CEO to participate in SBU Model=20 Senate

Dr. Bart=20 Lambert, associate professor of political science, and St. = Bonaventure=20 University students will welcome Vince Volpe Jr., president and = CEO of=20 Dresser-Rand Company, Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Volpe will = join=20 students who participate in Model Senate, a role-playing = simulation of the=20 legislative process in the U.S. Volpe will give students expert = testimony=20 on the Markey-Waxman cap-and=96trade energy bill, which is a plan = to limit=20 the amount of the emission of green house gases.

Dresser-Rand is among=20 the largest global suppliers of custom-engineered rotating = equipment=20 solutions for long-life, critical applications in the oil, gas,=20 petrochemical, and process industries.

=93Mr. = Volpe can=20 provide a unique insider=92s point of view on this important piece = of=20 legislation,=94 said Lambert. =93We are excited and honored that = he has agreed=20 to participate and help to make this a realistic and valuable = experience=20 for my students.=94

Volpe has = served as a=20 member of Dresser-Rand=92s board of directors since 2004. He has = been with=20 the company and its predecessor companies since 1981 and has held=20 positions in engineering, marketing and operations residing and = working in=20 various countries, including Venezuela, Japan, France and the U.K. = He is=20 proficient in five languages. Volpe earned a bachelor of science = in=20 mechanical engineering and a bachelor of arts in German = literature, both=20 from Lehigh University. He currently serves on St. Bonaventure=92s = Board of=20 Trustees.

Rodney Paul, Ph.D., = professor=20 of economics in the Department of Finance, had the paper = =93Sportsbook=20 Pricing and the Behavioral Biases of Bettors in the NHL=94 = accepted for=20 publication by the Journal of Economics and Finance. This paper = presents=20 the results of the research that was the basis for his invited=20 presentation at the University of Alberta last = December.

He also had = the paper=20 =93Competitive Balance in the NFL?=94 accepted for publication as = a chapter in=20 the book =93Sport and Economics,=94 which is being published by = the Hamburg=20 Institute of International Economics in the first quarter of=20 2010.

On Oct. = 23, 2009,=20 St. Bonaventure hosted meetings of the Cattaraugus County and = Allegany=20 County counselors associations. The Cattaraugus County Counselors=20 Association held a regular monthly meeting, while the Allegany = County=20 counselors did likewise plus heard from two St. Bonaventure = faculty=20 members. Addressing the group were Dr. Tom Delaney, professor of = counselor=20 education, who spoke on =93Social Anxiety Disorder,=94 and Dr. = Alan Silliker,=20 associate professor of counselor education, who discussed = =93Student Success=20 Skills,=94 an empirically validated approach to bridging the = academic=20 achievement gap in middle and high schools. Silliker and Monica = Emery,=20 director of recruitment, serve as SBU=92s representatives to the = Cattaraugus=20 County group and Bruce Campbell, director of graduate admissions, = is the=20 representative to the Allegany County Counselors = Association.
