=91BUZZ=92D about Pink=92 a = Success

WSBU =93The Buzz=94 = 88.3 FM draped=20 the St. Bonaventure University campus in pink last month when the=20 student-run radio station hosted a three-day breast cancer = awareness=20 fundraiser. The event, =93BUZZ=92D about Pink,=94 took place Oct.=20 26-28.

=91BUZZ=92D = About Pink=92=20 ended last Wednesday with a concert in the Rathskeller, an = on-campus=20 nightly hangout for students. When the dust settled and the last = notes=20 played, WSBU reached its $2,000 goal.

The = limited, pink=20 Buzz T-shirts sold out in three hours last Monday. WSBU ordered = 100 more=20 to satisfy the students=92 calls for more. Those sold out in 20 = minutes on=20 Wednesday to bring the total number of T-shirts sold to = 250.

WSBU also = sold out of=20 pink wristbands that bear the name =91BUZZ=92D about = Pink.=92

Pink = engulfed the St.=20 Bonaventure campus Wednesday as people wore their =91Buzz=92d = about Pink=92=20 T-shirts while others wore pink in support of the = event.

The = proceeds will be=20 donated in full to American Cancer Society.

SBU launches 2009-2010 Faculty and Staff=20 Campaign

The Annual Giving = Office kicks=20 off the 2009-2010 Faculty and Staff Campaign with a =93Give a = Little, Get a=20 Latte=94 event on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 2-4 p.m. at the Caf=E9 La = Verna.

Created for = faculty,=20 staff and students, =93Give a Little, Get a Latte=94 offers more = than a coupon=20 for a complimentary caf=E9 beverage or snack, said Andrea Bidell, = the=20 executive director for the Annual Fund.

=93We = invite the=20 students because we think it gives them a great opportunity to = learn that=20 not only do faculty and staff give back with their expertise and = their=20 time, but they also give back financially, and it really makes a=20 difference,=94 she said.

At =93Give = a Little,=20 Get a Latte,=94 Bidell said the Annual Fund staff will provide = informative=20 pieces on this year=92s Faculty and Staff Campaign, looking to = raise $78,925=20 and a 35 percent participation from the university=92s faculty and = staff.

Last = year=92s campaign=20 raised $78,168.34, exceeding its $78,000 goal, and drew a 31 = percent=20 participation rate.

Bidell said = money=20 raised in the campaign can benefit a specific department, = curriculum,=20 scholarship or endowment with a restricted donation; or, with an=20 unrestricted donation, it can be sent to where the university=92s = financial=20 aid is needed the most.

But the = dollar amount=20 means less than the participation rate, as other donors and = companies take=20 faculty participation into consideration when making = donations.

=93Participation is=20 really what=92s important to us,=94 Bidell said. =93It=92s not the = amount of their=20 gift. It=92s the fact that they give.=94

Bidell said = faculty=20 and staff can donate through payroll deduction, check (payable to = St.=20 Bonaventure), credit card, appreciated securities/bonds, bequests = and life=20 insurance.

=93Allowing = them to do=20 restricted or unrestricted, and the number of different ways they = can=20 give, we=92re trying to make it as easy as we can for them to give = back to=20 Bonaventure,=94 she said.

Another way = to make=20 it easy on the faculty and staff, Bidell said the annual fund = office will=20 provide information on its new Web site = (www.sbu/facultyandstaffcampaign),=20 in flyers, direct mail, e-mail blasts, ads in the BV and through = messages=20 posted on the Notice Board and in Inside Bona=92s.

=93We=92re = really trying=20 to give them as much information as we can,=94 Bidell = said.

Six faculty = members=20 have volunteered as co-chairs: Elizabeth Cashing, Mike Hoffman, = Rob=20 Hurlburt, Laura Peterson, Jeff Peterson and Ann = Tenglund.

Their job = includes=20 updating faculty and staff on information about the campaign and = the=20 upcoming =93Give a Little, Get a Latte=94 event.

Bidell said = the=20 Annual Giving Office created =93Give a Little, Get a Latte=94 = event to help=20 promote the faculty and staff campaign.

=93We = decided that we=20 wanted to do a campus-wide event to just get the word out and have = an=20 opportunity to talk about it to the campus more,=94 she = said.

Bidell said = interest=20 in the event has grown over the past three years. Last year, she = estimated=20 150-175 people in attendance.

After the = campaign=20 concludes in May, Bidell said the university holds a special = thank-you=20 event for participants. Last year, she said the university held a=20 =93Margaritaville=94 at the Clubhouse instead of the usual=20 luncheon.

=93Because = of the=20 economic situation, we decided we wanted to do something more = fun,=94 Bidell=20 said.

Diverse and = exciting Ethos=20 Percussion Group to perform at SBU's Quick = Center

The dynamic = Ethos=20 Percussion Group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in = the third=20 concert of the Friends of Good Music season at St. Bonaventure=20 University=92s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.


Ethos = Percussion=20 Group has inspired audiences throughout the United States since = 1989 with=20 its exceptional music-making and collective devotion to the world = of=20 percussion music. The group plays with =93expert togetherness, = sensitivity=20 and zest,=94 raved the New York Times following a concert at = Lincoln=20 Center.


The = ensemble=20 members are all accomplished solo artists whose distinctive = musical=20 perspectives combine to create Ethos=92 diverse programming and=20 performances. Equally at home in contemporary classical repertoire = as in=20 music from non-Western traditions, Ethos integrates global = instruments and=20 playing styles into percussion chamber music for a compelling = experience=20 in sight and sound.


The = ensemble=92s=20 critically acclaimed performances regularly feature numerous = commissions=20 and world premieres, traditional influences from India, West = Africa and=20 the Middle East, and landmark works by composers such as John = Cage, Philip=20 Glass, Steve Reich and Frank Zappa.

Dr. = John=20 Mulryan, Board of Trustees Professor of English, gave two = papers=20 during the month of October. On October 15th, he presented a paper = at the=20 international Milton conference in Murfreesboro, Tennessee: =93Is = Milton=92s=20 Shakespeare better than Shakespeare=92s Shakespeare? Gender = Ambiguity in=20 Macbeth and Paradise Lost.
