The Franciscan Institute Presents the Sixth Annual = Ignatius=20 Brady, O.F.M. Memorial Endowment Lecture

The Franciscan = Institute=20 invites the St. Bonaventure University community to attend the = Sixth=20 Annual Ignatius Brady, O.F.M., Memorial Endowment Lecture at 4 = p.m.=20 Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the University Chapel.

Dr. Beverly = Mayne=20 Kienzle will be this year=92s guest lecturer. Kienzle is a = professor at=20 Harvard Divinity School at Harvard University. She is the John H. = Morison=20 Professor of the Practice of Latin and Romance Languages. Her = research=20 centers on medieval preaching, saints and a concern about the = violence=20 against women during the Middle Ages.

Kienzle=92s = lecture=20 topic is =93The Friars, Medieval Women and The = Inquisition.=94

A = question-and-answer=20 session will follow the lecture. The event will end with a = cocktail hour=20 in Doyle Hall Dining Room from 5 until 6 p.m.

Fr. = Ignatius was one=20 of the world=92s leading authorities on the thought and = spirituality of the=20 great medieval Franciscan writers, including St. Bonaventure. Fr. = Ignatius=20 taught at the Franciscan Institute in the late 1940s and 1950s, = returning=20 for summer sessions in the 1970s. He received an honorary = doctorate from=20 St. Bonaventure University in 1974, during the celebration of the = seventh=20 centenary of the death of Saint Bonaventure.

In 2004, = St. John the=20 Baptist Province, Cincinnati, announced a $1 million gift to the=20 university to honor the memory of Fr. Ignatius, establishing an = endowment=20 to fund research at the Franciscan Institute, provide financial = aid to=20 students enrolled at the Institute, and provide funding for an = annual=20 lecture at the Institute honoring Fr. Ignatius.

SBU to host = eighth Girls Day=20 for technology

St. Bonaventure University=92s = Department of=20 Computer Science is sponsoring the eighth annual Girls Day event = beginning=20 at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

The = participants will=20 be sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls from about 30 area = schools.=20 Students interested in attending should contact their guidance = counselors=20 or technology teachers. The deadline for schools to sign up is = Oct.=20 28.

Students = will have=20 the opportunity to learn about robots, digital scrapbooking,=20 computer-generated animations, encryption, social networking and = other=20 modern applications of computer technology. Five different = hands-on=20 workshops will be presented by St. Bonaventure graduates and=20 undergraduates and professional women in the computer science = field.=20

St. = Bonaventure=20 students will also assist participants during lab sessions and as = they=20 walk around campus between workshops.

Suzanne = Watson, Ed.=20 D., computer science lecturer, started the Girls Day event after = reading=20 about the decreased interest in the sciences among middle-school = aged=20 girls. An article in the Wall Street Journal reported that the = number of=20 incoming freshmen women who declare a computer science major fell = by 70=20 percent between 2000 and 2005. Watson made it her mission to = change those=20 numbers.

=93We have = several=20 goals for our eighth annual Girls Day,=94 said Watson. =93We want = them to have=20 a positive experience with computer applications, and we want them = to=20 interact with successful computer science professionals and=20 students.=94

Heather = Blersch,=20 =9288, who works for General Dynamics IT as a program manager = for the U.S.=20 Coast Guard=92s Telecommunication and Information Systems = Command;=20
Kristen = Keenan,=20 =9202 and =9206, who is a staff specialist for math, science and = technology=20 with Cattaraugus Allegany BOCES.

Dr. Anne = Foerst,=20 assistant professor for computer science, will also be presenting = at the=20 workshops.

=93Just = meeting and=20 seeing successful women, students and professionals doing what = they love=20 to do is a valuable experience for the girls,=94 Watson said, = =93And, of=20 course, we also introduce them to St. Bonaventure = University.=94

The event = will=20 conclude at 3 p.m. after a panel discussion with workshop = presenters.=20 Throughout the discussion, participants will have the opportunity = to ask=20 questions regarding the computer science field.

GOAC to = host Olean Area=20 Walk for Hunger Relief

The St. Bonaventure = community is=20 invited to participate in the Olean Area Walk for Hunger Relief on = Nov. 8.=20 Sponsored by the Greater Olean Association of Churches, the event = raises=20 about $5,000 each year for emergency food providers.

Local = churches,=20 service organizations and businesses are encouraged to recruit = walkers to=20 solicit and collect pledges. Individuals and families unaffiliated = with a=20 specific organization may also collect funds and = participate.

Half of the = proceeds=20 collected are given to support local emergency food providers, = such as the=20 Olean Food Pantry and the Warming House. The other half is divided = among=20 world organizations chosen by each participating group.

The Rev. = Dan=20 McDowell, senior pastor at Olean First Baptist Church and = president of the=20 Greater Olean Association of Churches, said, =93It=92s a great = boost to our=20 local hunger agencies, especially going into the holiday season = when the=20 demand gets to be really high.=94

Registration the day=20 of the walk begins at 1 p.m. at the Warming House at 110 W. State = St. in=20 Olean. From there, walkers will trek three miles on State, Front = and Union=20 streets beginning at 2 p.m.

The = event=92s=20 coordinator and director of the Warming House, Trevor Thompson, = said he=20 encourages people of all ages to participate, whether as part of = an=20 organization or not.

=93Beyond = raising money=20 for these local food providers, this is an opportunity for the = community=20 to be made aware of the people who still go hungry,=94 he said. = =93It=92s also a=20 chance to gather together as advocates for others.=94

Darwin L.=20 King, professor of accounting, and Edward D. King, 2005 = SBU alum,=20 had an article titled =93What Every New Forestland Owner Should = Know=94=20 published in the September 2009 issue of the Oil, Gas & Energy = Quarterly. The article reviewed a number of topics that any new = timber=20 owner must know in order to succeed in a forestland business. This = article=20 is King's 22nd article published in the Oil, Gas & Energy = Quarterly=20 since 2000.
