Harlem Quartet to perform at St. Bonaventure's = Quick=20 Center

The Harlem Quartet = will=20 perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the second concert of the = Friends=20 of Good Music season at St. Bonaventure University=92s Regina A. = Quick=20 Center for the Arts.

These = extraordinary=20 award-winning musicians will play quartets by Beethoven, Turina = and Wynton=20 Marsalis, as well as the jazz standard =93Take the =91A=92 = Train=94 by Billy=20 Strayhorn.

The = Harlem=20 Quartet is composed of first-place laureates of the Sphinx = Competition in=20 Detroit, which is open to all junior high, high school and = college-age=20 black and Latino string players living in the United States. The = Sphinx=20 Competition=92s goal is to =93encourage, develop and recognize = classical music=20 talent in the black and Latino communities.=94

The = Harlem=20 Quartet made its debut in 2006 at Carnegie Hall, earning rave = reviews from=20 the New York Times. The quartet members are also seasoned solo = artists who=20 have appeared with the New York Philharmonic; the Atlanta, = Cleveland,=20 Detroit, Pittsburgh and Baltimore symphonies; and the Boston Pops, = among=20 others.

Quartet = members=20 have their roots in Cuba, Canada, Britain and the U.S. From these=20 backgrounds, and from the Sphinx influence, they cultivate a = refreshing=20 range of music, playing great tunes by iconic jazz composers such = as the=20 famed Wynton Marsalis, director of jazz at Lincoln Center, as well = as the=20 traditional classical pieces by Beethoven and Turina.

Dedicated to=20 education, this innovative and daring string quartet serves as = principal=20 faculty at the Sphinx Performance Academy at Walnut Hill School in = Massachusetts, and as visiting faculty at the Sphinx Preparatory = Music=20 Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit.

The = performance=20 is part of the annual concert series presented by Friends of Good = Music in=20 association with The Quick Center. This concert is supported in = part by=20 the New York State Council on the Arts.

Renowned peace = activist to=20 speak Oct. 22

The=20 Franciscan Heritage Program, along with help from Clare College, = is=20 hosting a lecture by nationally known peace activist Tom Cornell.=20

The = lecture, titled=20 =93To Speak Peace,=94 is Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. in Dresser = Auditorium in=20 the John J. Murphy Professional Building.

The lecture = will=20 concentrate on many of Cornell=92s past endeavors, and take a look = at=20 possible peaceful resolutions of contemporary issues.

Cornell is = a veteran=20 peace and civil rights activist. He organized the first = demonstration=20 opposing the Vietnam War in 1963, and the first act of corporate=20 resistance in 1965 with the burning of draft cards.

He has been = arrested=20 many times including in Selma, Ala., in 1965. He was convicted of = one=20 felony and served six months in prison in 1968, and was later = pardoned by=20 President Jimmy Carter in 1977.

Cornell is = a retired=20 editor of The Catholic Worker, in which he has been published many = times.=20 He has also been published in the National Catholic Worker, the = National=20 Catholic Reporter and the New York Times Sunday = Magazine.

He has = received the=20 1984 New England Catholic Peace Fellowship, the 1985 Waterbury, = Conn. Bar=20 Association Liberty Bell Award, the National Catholic Peace = Fellowship St.=20 Marcellus Award in 2007, and the New York Metro Pax Christi in=20 2009.

Cornell = will also be=20 visiting the Robert Lax archives in Friedsam Memorial Library. He = is eager=20 to come to campus because he was a friend of both Lax and Thomas = Merton,=20 the renowned trappist monk who taught English at St. Bonaventure = in=20 1940-41.

Cornell=92s = lecture is=20 free and open to the public.

SBU Concert = Choir to=20 Perform at Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts

The=20 Department of Visual and Performing Arts at St. Bonaventure = University=20 invites the community to a concert Sunday, Oct. 25, in the Rigas = Family=20 Theater of The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The St. = Bonaventure Concert Choir will begin performing at 2 p.m., singing = a=20 variety of pieces accompanied by a 10-member ensemble of the = hip-hop dance=20 team.

One of = the=20 pieces, =93Somagwaza,=94 is an African folk tune arranged by Ysaye = Barnwell,=20 and another, =93Wade in the Water,=94 is a spiritual piece = arranged by J.B.=20 Lyle. The concert will also feature =93Praise His Holy Name=94 by = Keith=20 Hampton and =93Santo=94 by Glenn McClure from St. Francis in the = Americas, A=20 Caribbean Mass. A poetry reading from Brett Keegan will precede = the piece=20 =93Les Feuilles mortes=94 by J. Kosma and J. Prevert.

The = event is free=20 and open to the public.

SBU Theater to present Shakespeare=92s = =93As You Like=20 It=94

St. Bonaventure = University=92s=20 theater students will entertain audiences this fall with a = production of=20 the comedy =93As You Like It=94 by William Shakespeare.

The = story is=20 based on love, deception and finding one=92s true self. It = revolves around=20 the lives of two feuding brothers and a woman who runs away, = dressed as a=20 man, to fool lovers and to protect herself.

Lawrence Smith,=20 adjunct professor of visual and performing arts, will direct the = play and=20 Rebecca Misenheimer, assistant professor of visual and performing = arts,=20 will be helping as designer and technical director while Dr. Ed. = Simone,=20 chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and director = of the=20 Theater Program at SBU, is on sabbatical this semester.

=93Every director=20 is going to have his or her own approach about how to work with = actors,=94=20 said Erin Lowry, junior theater and journalism and mass = communication=20 major. =93Both Dr. Simone and Professor Larry are great about = having the=20 actor discover his or her own character and using clues in the = text to=20 develop background.=94

Smith = will focus=20 on keeping the show moving fairly quickly. =93One way I plan on = achieving=20 the concept of the show is by having the actors stay on the side = of the=20 stage when their character is not part of the scene,=94 he said, = =93This way=20 there is no extra time added to the show by having them walk on = and off of=20 the stage.=94

St. Bonaventure to host Health and = Safety Fair for=20 campus community

A Health and Safety = Fair for=20 members of the St. Bonaventure University campus community will be = held=20 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, in the Doyle Hall = Dining=20 Room.

The = fair=92s=20 primary focus is to present information on how students, faculty = and staff=20 can increase their protection from the flu, said Melissa Gallison=20 Blackstone, director of Health Services at St. Bonaventure, = sponsor of the=20 event.

Exhibitors from=20 local, regional and state organizations will offer information on = health=20 promotion, illness prevention and alternative medicine resources, = said=20 Gallison Blackstone.

Among = outside=20 agencies expected to have representatives at the fair are the = American=20 Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Cattaraugus County Health = Department,=20 Cattaraugus County Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, New = York State=20 Police, Tri-County Tobacco Control Coalition, and Rehabilitation=20 Today.

Campus=20 organizations participating in the fair include the Counseling = Center,=20 Richter Center, Medical Emergencies Response Team (MERT) and = Franciscan=20 Center for Social Concern.

St. Bonaventure campus community invited = to fast and=20 feast for hunger awareness

St. Bonaventure = faculty, staff=20 and students are invited to join the Warming House in a =93Fasting = and=20 Feasting for Hunger Awareness=94 event on Thursday, Oct. = 29.

=93We will = be asking=20 people to fast for the day on Oct. 29 in solidarity with all those = who go=20 without adequate food and then we extend an invitation to come to = a soup=20 supper in Doyle Dining Hall at 5:30 p.m.,=94 said Trevor Thompson, = director=20 of the Warming House.

During = dinner there=20 will be an opportunity to hear stories from Warming House guests = about the=20 role of the Warming House in their lives and stories from the SBU = students=20 who serve there. Warming House guests will be transported to = campus for=20 the special event.
