historian Payne.=20
      Virtually everyone agrees that if Harding was not the nation=92s =
worst=20
      president, he was among the worst. This book is a refreshing look =
at the=20
      Harding legacy based on a deep understanding of the age in which =
this=20
      tragedy took place. The scope of the author=92s research is =
impressive, and=20
      lays the foundation for his conclusion about the man and the myth. =

      Probably because Harding=92s reputation is so bad, he continues to =
capture=20
      the interest of the nation=92s writers. The author=92s discussion =
of these=20
      writers, whether of fact or fiction, provides a fascinating =
portrait of=20
      why Harding=92s reputation has evolved over time. Payne =
demonstrates how=20
      Harding is often linked to modern presidencies, such as William J. =
