Opening credits of new Bruce Willis sci fi flick = =91Surrogates=92=20 includes interview with SBU=92s Anne Foerst

The = opening=20 credits of Bruce Willis=92 new science fiction thriller include a = brief=20 interview with St. Bonaventure professor Dr. Anne Foerst, an = expert on the=20 relationship between science and religion.

The=20 movie, =93Surrogates,=94 is set in a futuristic world where humans = live in=20 isolation and interact through surrogate robots. A cop (Willis) is = forced=20 to leave his home for the first time in years in order to = investigate the=20 murders of others=92 surrogates.

The=20 opening credits depict a =93virtual=94 discussion about these = surrogates and=20 features a PBS interview with Foerst conducted several years ago = on a show=20 about transhumanism (which Foerst is against).

Dr.=20 Foerst has published papers in academic journals on the = possibility for=20 mutual enrichment between artificial intelligence, the cognitive = sciences,=20 and Jewish and Christian theologies and anthropologies. She also = writes=20 for popular media to bring the relationship between religion and = science=20 to a broader audience.

ABOUT=20 FOERST:

Foerst=20 is an assistant professor of computer science at SBU.

Before=20 joining the faculty at St. Bonaventure in 2001, Foerst was a = researcher at=20 the artificial intelligence laboratory at the Massachusetts = Institute of=20 Technology, where she served as a theological adviser to = scientists=20 building humanoid machines.

Foerst is contributing editor for the = quarterly magazine=20 Spirituality & Health and is the author of =93God In the = Machine: What=20 Robots Teach Us About Humanity and God.=94

Foerst=20 holds degrees in computer science and philosophy from the = University of=20 Bonn, Germany, a master of divinity degree from the Seminary of = the=20 Protestant Church in Rhineland, and a Ph.D. in theology from the=20 Ruhr-University at Bochum, Germany.

SBU-insured = employees offered=20 free flu shots by Olean pharmacist

Free flu shots = for=20 employees who carry the university=92s Independent Health = insurance will be=20 given on campus Oct. 13 and Oct. 23 by Olean pharmacist Vic Vena, = a=20 longtime friend of St. Bonaventure.

The flu shots are for = seasonal=20 influenza, not H1N1, and are provided for the convenience of = employees=20 with the university-sponsored health insurance. All employees are=20 encouraged to get flu shots at any of the many resources in the = community,=20 including your primary provider.

This opportunity has been=20 coordinated to enhance the number of injections that can be given, = and=20 limit the delay of paperwork. Mr. Vena will be administering the = vaccines=20 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Oct. 13 and Oct. 23 from his van, = which will=20 be parked on the basketball courts between the Richter and Reilly=20 centers.

St. = Bonaventure graduate=20 and New York state senator to keynote this year's Communications=20 Day

High school journalists and their advisers = will look=20 to learn from and impress professionals in their field at this = year=92s=20 annual Communications Day on Oct. 16 at St. Bonaventure=20 University.

New=20 York State Sen. Catharine Young is this year=92s Communications = Day keynote=20 speaker. Past speakers include the likes of Walter Cronkite, Tim = Russert=20 and Dan Barry.

Young=20 graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1982 with a degree in mass=20 communication. She served in the Cattaraugus County Legislature = until=20 1999, and then was elected to the New York State Assembly. In = 2005, she=20 was elected to the New York Senate.

All=20 Communications Day sessions will be held in the John J. Murphy=20 Professional Building on campus. Sen. Young will take the podium = in the=20 Dresser Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. and her talk will be followed by = the=20 award ceremony.

The day=20 includes 16 sessions that will focus on different aspects of the = media and=20 public relations. Topics include =93So You Want to be on = Television:=20 Broadcast Reporting,=94 =93Internet Writing: It=92s Different=94 = and =93Sports=20 Reporting: Far More Than Scores and Statistics.=94

Each=20 information session will be conducted by a professional in that = field.=20 This year=92s professionals consist of many of the faculty members = in St.=20 Bonaventure=92s Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass=20 Communication, administrators from St. Bonaventure=92s Office of = Marketing=20 and Communications and many journalists from the greater Buffalo = and=20 Rochester areas.

The day=20 will conclude with an awards ceremony to recognize high schools = and=20 individual students who excel in their field of print or broadcast = journalism.

Communications Day started in 1936 under the name = of Press=20 Day. Regular events started in 1949 when the journalism department = was=20 founded at St. Bonaventure. When Press Day first started it dealt = solely=20 with different forms of newspaper writing and reporting. As time=20 progressed and media grew to include radio, television and the = Internet,=20 and communications began to include both public relations and = advertising,=20 Press Day became Communications Day.

John=20 Mulryan, Board of Trustees Professor of English, = Steven=20 Brown, Professor of Classical Languages, and = Bruce=20 Swann, Classics Librarian at the University of Illinois, = are now=20 under contract to produce an annotated translation of L.G. = Giraldi=92s =93De=20 Deis Gentium,=94 an extensive commentary on classical myth, first = published=20 in Basel Switzerland, in 1548. This will be the first translation = of the=20 Latin text in any language. The contract is with ACMRS, the = Arizona Center=20 for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
