Monti to keynote Francis Week = 2009

Fr. Dominic V. Monti, O.F.M., = former=20 president of St. Bonaventure University, will be the featured = speaker=20 during Francis Week activities Sept. 27 through Oct. 4.

Fr. Dominic = will=20 engage the question, =93What Does Theology Have to Do with = Anything? The=20 Queen of the Sciences in a Liberal Education,=94 at the Fr. Jerome = Kelly=20 Memorial Lecture at 4 p.m. Oct. 1 in the University = Chapel.

The talk, = like all=20 Francis Week activities, is free and open to the = public.

Fr. Dominic = will also=20 speak about his new book, =93Francis & His Brothers: A Popular = History=20 of the Franciscan Friars,=94 at a 10 a.m. talk Oct. 1 in the Walsh = Auditorium; and about =93Mendicants in the Marketplace=94 from = 12:30-1:20 p.m.=20 Oct. 2 at the Friday Forum (for faculty and staff only) in the = Doyle=20 Dining Room.

A longtime = professor=20 of church history, Fr. Dominic was president of St. Bonaventure = from 2003=20 to 2004 and is now vicar provincial of the Holy Name Province of = Friars=20 Minor.

Francis = Week=20 activities begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with the Family Weekend Mass = in the=20 Reilly Center Arena. The Mass will celebrate the Franciscan = Jubilees of=20 President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F. (50 years), Fr. Louis = McCormick,=20 O.F.M. (50 years), biology professor Fr. Peter Schneible, O.F.M. = (25=20 years), and Fr. Harry Monaco, O.F.M. (newly ordained).

Later = Sunday, from 1=20 to 4 p.m., a Heavenly Harvest Celebration will be held at Canticle = Farm,=20 3835 S. Nine Mile Road, Allegany. The celebration will feature a = fresh=20 salad bar lunch with homemade desserts, drawings, a cooking = contest, and=20 entertainment.

Bonagany 2009 = welcomes=20 families for food, friendship, fun

Saturday=92s Bonagany Festival in Allegany = promises fun for=20 the whole family with music, wagon rides and artist displays, = complemented=20 by savory selections from local eateries. The festival runs from = 11 a.m.=20 to 5 p.m. on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic for the=20 day.

Held during = St.=20 Bonaventure=92s annual Family Weekend, the festival offers a great = opportunity for parents to get out and enjoy the local=20 community.

Festival = chairperson=20 Lori Tiller encourages area residents to join the celebration,=20 too.

=93It=92s = really one of=20 the most family-friendly festivals of the region,=94 she said. = =93Most of the=20 activities for kids are free, including inflatable amusements, = wagon=20 rides, the balloon man, a caricature artist, a juggler, local = dancing=20 showcases, and some of my alpacas from Elderberry Farm Alpacas. = There=92s=20 plenty for the adults to enjoy, too, with regional artists, local=20 eateries, festival food, classic cars, and a lineup of local music = that is=20 really fantastic.=94

From St. = Bonaventure,=20 the 2009-10 men=92s and women=92s varsity basketball teams and = coaches will be=20 on hand from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to conduct skills sessions for = children,=20 run a free-throw shooting contest, and sign autographs and pose = for=20 photos. The SBU cheerleaders will be performing as well. And like = previous=20 years, student clubs and associations will have informational = tables and=20 the ROTC program will provide a free rock-climbing = wall.

Bonagany = will feature=20 two stages on Main Street. On the main stage, located in front of=20 Allegany=92s Town Hall, the music lineup will start at 11 a.m. and = will=20 feature (in order) the Allegany Alumni Band, Living My Last Day, = The Wild=20 Rovers, and The Jam.

Stage 2, = located near=20 the Allegany Public Library, will feature The Blues Brothers of = Olean and=20 Generations, as well as performances by the Olean Area Irish = Dancers and=20 other groups from St. Bonaventure. In addition, a re-dedication = ceremony=20 of the Allegany Public Library with New York Sen. Catharine Young = and=20 Assemblyman Joseph Giglio will take place promptly at 2:45 = p.m.

Bonagany = 2009 also=20 continues an emphasis on regional arts. The artists displaying = this year=20 include Deb Eck, Mike Weishan, Dee Smith, Jonathan Gilroy, Cherie = Antle,=20 Trenton Lutes, Ron and Amy Peterson, Green Pear Press and Stone = Hill=20 Studios.

=93The Arts = Council is=20 proud to be part of this community event, which is so integral to = the=20 long-term relationship between Allegany=92s town and village and = St.=20 Bonaventure University,=94 said committee member Anne-Conroy = Baiter,=20 executive director of the festival=92s co-sponsor, the Cattaraugus = County=20 Arts Council.

Bonagany = was founded=20 in 2005 with the mission of celebrating the friendship between the = village=20 and town of Allegany and St. Bonaventure University.

Local food = vendors=20 for the festival will include Randy=92s up the River, Angees, = Pendergast=20 Sausages, Cablecar Concessions, Larry=92s Food Wagon, Fowler=92s = Taffy, and a=20 pig roast in front of the Other Place Tavern. In addition, Main = Street=20 businesses and restaurants will have their doors open for = festivalgoers.=20

St. = Bonaventure to start=20 collecting stories during Family Weekend

Since the = dawn of=20 man, we have used word of mouth to pass down stories from one = generation=20 to the next, recording history. This academic year, St. = Bonaventure=20 University will join the conversation and begin orally recording = its own=20 history as part of a freshman class project.

As part of = the=20 freshman University 101 course and All-Bonaventure Reads programs, = each=20 member of the class of 2013 will interview someone connected to = St.=20 Bonaventure. These participants can be anyone: community members, = alumni,=20 faculty or staff. They do not need to be alumni or work at = Bona=92s. If they=20 have a story to share about the university, there are 470 freshmen = who=20 want to listen. Each interview will be recorded. The overall goal = of the=20 project is to create an oral history of the university while = providing=20 participants with a unique and heartfelt experience.

=93If you = have a story=20 to tell about St. Bonaventure=97what it means to you, how it has = impacted=20 your life, family or someone you know=97would you share it with = our=20 freshmen?=94 said Nancy Casey, director of the First-Year = Experience program=20 and associate professor of education.

This = project spawned=20 diectly from this year's All Bonaventure Reads selection titled = "Listening=20 is an Act of Love." The book is a compilation of short stories = from=20 peoples' everyday lives that were gathered by an independent = non-profit=20 project called StoryCorps.

StoryCorps = has two=20 permanent =93listening booths=94 located in Grand Central Station, = in New York=20 City and in New Orleans. StoryCorps also has one mobile booth that = travels=20 all around the country, collecting peoples=92 = experiences.

Participants enter=20 the booth and talk to one another about subjects varying from work = related=20 experiences to Sept. 11. At the end of each session there are two = recorded=20 copies of the conversation. One copy stays with the participants = and the=20 other is sent to the Library of Congress.

St. = Bonaventure is=20 hoping to imitate StoryCorps=92 success by archiving peoples=92 = stories and=20 saving them for later generations.

The project = will be=20 kicked off this weekend during Family Weekend. Beginning on = Friday, Sept.=20 25, students will have the opportunity to interview loved ones, = friends=20 and fellow Bonnies in the conference room of the Thomas Merton = Center.=20

The booth = at St.=20 Bonaventure will be available from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 25 and = from 9 a.m.=20 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 26. More time will be provided that Sunday if=20 necessary.

Dr.=20 Rodney Paul, professor of economics in the Department of = Finance,=20 had the paper =93Are Behavioral Biases Consistent Across the = Atlantic?=94=20 accepted for publication in the Journal of Gambling Business and=20 Economics. The paper studies fan and bettor preferences for = scoring in=20 European soccer and compares the results to similar biases found = in the=20 most popular North American sports.

Also, = Paul gave=20 an invited presentation at the Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne at = the=20 University of Paris - Pantheon-Sorbonne in Paris, France. The = presentation=20 was part of the First European Conference in Sports Economics, = which=20 included participants from Europe and around the world. The = conference=20 included presentations by frequent Financial Times contributor = Stefan=20 Szymanski and a representative of UEFA (Union of European Football = Associations =97 who was a sponsor of the event).

For the = 15th=20 consecutive year, Dr. Leslie M. Sabina, professor = of=20 music, has been honored with an ASCAPLUS award. This award, given = by the=20 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, recognizes=20 established composers whose main activity is outside of broadcast = media,=20 and whose catalogs have prestige value for which they would not = otherwise=20 be
compensated.

Additionally,=20 Sabina=92s publisher, Kendor Music Inc., has recently released two = of=20 Sabina=92s latest big band compositions, =93Brouhaha=94 and = =93Seismic Strut.=94 A=20 recording session that will feature the two works is scheduled for = January=20 2010 in Denver, Colo.
