CARL plans series of leadership = workshops

From advice = on how to=20 manage money to how to manage a difficult colleague, students at = St.=20 Bonaventure will have the opportunity to attend leadership = workshops=20 nearly every week of the fall semester.

The = university=92s=20 Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership has a full slate = of=20 events from presentations and video speakers to small roundtable=20 discussions.

=93These programs=20 will help students enhance further their leadership skills and = teach them=20 about the many leadership styles,=94 said Rob DeFazio, director of = the=20 Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership.

DeFazio = explained=20 that the center will host leadership programming in three areas = this year:=20 National Society of Leadership and Success, Guest Speaker Series, = and the=20 Bona/Lead program.

The = Guest Speaker=20 Series and Bona/Lead programs are offered to students for free. = Students=20 who decide to obtain a $75 membership in the National Society of=20 Leadership and Success can receive additional benefits such as a=20 leadership certificate, a T-shirt and the opportunity to attend=20 conferences. (Students meeting certain academic criteria may = qualify for=20 honorary membership.)

St. Bonaventure is now a member of = the=20 National Society of Leadership and Success, a nationwide = organization=20 dedicated to creating lasting positive changes in students=92 = lives and in=20 the community. NSLS is a nationwide community of leaders dedicated = to=20 helping people discover and achieve their goals. It offers = life-changing=20 lectures from the nation=92s leading presenters, and an = opportunity for=20 success-oriented people to come together and help one another=20 succeed.

SBU great Bob = Lanier named=20 co-winner of Basketball Human Spirit Award

St. = Bonaventure=20 University basketball legend Bob Lanier will receive The Mannie = Jackson=20 Basketball Human Spirit Award tonight (Sept. 10) at the Naismith = Memorial=20 Basketball Hall of Fame, part of the festivities leading up to = Saturday's=20 class of 2009 Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Lanier, who = led St.=20 Bonaventure to the NCAA Final Four in 1969-70, is one of three=20 co-recipients of The Human Spirit Award. He shares the honor with = former=20 player Alonzo Mourning and former NBA referee Ken Hudson. The = award is=20 presented annually to individuals who have been inspired from = their=20 participation in the game of basketball to use the game as a = catalyst for=20 both personal growth and change in their community.

"The = recipients=20 of the award have long embraced the core values of the game, = including=20 dedication, hard work and a commitment to others," said Mannie = Jackson,=20 chairman of the board of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "Bob Lanier = and=20 Alonzo Mourning are leaders in basketball's global community while = Ken=20 Hudson is a leader at the local and regional levels who passed = along his=20 passion for the game to millions of youngsters in Massachusetts = and=20 Atlanta, alike. All three men truly represent the vision of this=20 prestigious award."

Now in = its third=20 year, the Mannie Jackson Basketball Human Spirit Award has evolved = into an=20 honor that recognizes both national and local or regional = grassroots=20 efforts that depict an individual's commitment to the game of = basketball=20 and its role in community service that transcends personal reward = and=20 literally challenges the human spirit.

Lanier, = a 14-year=20 standout in the NBA, was an eight-time all-star following his = All-American=20 career at St. Bonaventure. Lanier, the most valuable player of the = 1974=20 NBA All-Star Game, played just over nine seasons in Detroit and = four=20 seasons in Milwaukee. He received numerous community service = honors,=20 including the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in=20 1978.

From = 1989 to=20 2005, Lanier chaired the NBA's "Stay in School" program, NBA = TeamUp=20 Program and the league's "Read to Achieve" initiative. Lanier is = special=20 assistant to the NBA commissioner, a post he has held since 2005, = and is=20 the NBA Cares global ambassador.

In = 2007, Lanier=20 recieved the National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy award, = dedicated=20 to the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Hudson, = the=20 former vice president of marketing development and director of = community=20 relations for the Coca-Cola Company, became the first person of = color to=20 referee a city high school basketball championship, in 1967, and = later=20 became a pioneering NBA referee, officiating in the league from = 1968 to=20 1972 as one of the league's earliest African-American game=20 officials.

He = developed=20 several Boston-area youth basketball programs and was named to the = board=20 of directors of multiple companies, including Coca-Cola's New = England=20 board of directors. He is currently an observer of officials for = the=20 NBA.

Mourning, a=20 15-year NBA veteran who earned a league championship ring in 2006 = as a=20 member of the Miami Heat, has made as much of an impact off the = court as=20 he did when he played in the NBA and, before then, as a member of = the=20 famed Georgetown Hoyas where he was a three-time NCAA = All-American.=20 Mourning was a member of the U.S. gold medal teams at the 1994 = World=20 Championship in Toronto and the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in=20 Sydney.

Mourning was=20 diagnosed with a kidney disorder following the 2000 Olympics and = was=20 sidelined during the 2002-03 season after he received a kidney = transplant.=20 All the while, Mourning ran off-season community relations = programs such=20 as "Zo's Summer Groove" and "Zo's Fund for Life," raising more = than $6=20 million via the Alonzo Mourning Charities program. He continues to = be=20 active in the community and serves as a spokesperson for the = National=20 Kidney Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House = Charities.

The = Mannie=20 Jackson Basketball Human Spirit Award provides two annual = scholarships=20 valued at $5,000 each to students who are pursuing a master's = degree in a=20 sport management field.

Members = of the=20 Class of 2009 Hall of Fame inductees include Michael Jordan, who = won six=20 NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls; David Robinson, who led = the San=20 Antonio Spurs to two NBA titles; Jerry Sloan, who coached the Utah = Jazz to=20 two campionships and is the only NBA coach in history to win over = 1,000=20 games with a single team; John Stockton, who played his entire NBA = career=20 with the Utah Jazz and won two titles; and Rutgers University = coach C.=20 Vivian Stringer, the first coach to lead three different schools = to the=20 NCAA Final Four.

SBU to = remember Sept. 11=20 victims Friday

The St. = Bonaventure=20 and Olean-area communities are invited to a ceremony at 11:15 a.m. = Friday=20 in front of Plassmann Hall to commemorate the tragedy of Sept. 11, = 2001.

The = University=92s 9/11=20 memorial is in front of Plassmann, located on the west side of=20 campus.

The = ceremony will=20 honor the three University alumni killed in the attacks on the = World Trade=20 Center, as well as all the victims who died in Washington, D.C., = New York=20 and Pennsylvania that day.

Robert = Donius, vice=20 president for university ministries, and Br. F. Edward Coughlin, = O.F.M.,=20 vice president for Franciscan mission, will take part in the = ceremony,=20 along with students and members of the University=92s ROTC=20 unit.

Health Care = Access=20 Coalition to host 'Single Payer Health Care Under the=20 Microscope'

The public = is invited=20 to join the Health Care Access Coalition, Congressman Eric Massa, = and Andy=20 Coates, M.D., for a discussion titled =93Single Payer Health Care = Under the=20 Microscope=94 from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, in Walsh = Auditorium on the=20 St. Bonaventure University campus.

Before = there was=20 Barack Obama=92s health care reform bill, there was HR 676, an = expanded and=20 improved Medicare for all. Also known as single payer health care, = this=20 proposal would ensure access to quality health care for everyone,=20 according to officials with Health Care Access Coalition (HCAC). = Massa=20 (D., 29th District), who has publicly stated that he favors the = single=20 payer option, has said he does not support Obama=92s health care = reform=20 bill, H.R. 3200, as it now stands.

The = Congressman=20 will describe the status of the health care reform proposals in = Washington=20 and his position on single payer. Coates, an internist in Albany = and an=20 active member of Single Payer New York, will speak of the need for = health=20 care that leaves no one out. Pre-med students from St. Bonaventure = will=20 then take the lead with questions related to single payer health = care.=20 Members of the audience will also have an opportunity to pose = their=20 questions.

Mt. Irenaeus to celebrate 25 = years of=20 ministry and mission

The = Franciscan=20 traditions of hospitality and spirit of prayer that helped to = establish=20 St. Bonaventure University have been the foundation for Mt. = Irenaeus,=20 Franciscan Mountain Retreat, which serves St. Bonaventure = University and=20 the area community. The mountain was established 25 years ago as a = place=20 for students, faculty and visitors to visit and rest, away from = the campus=20 life, so to return to the university and their daily lives, = feeling=20 revitalized.

Celebrate = those 25=20 years of ministry and mission at Mt. Irenaeus on Saturday, Oct. = 17.=20 Beginning at 2:30 p.m., an anniversary concert featuring = performers=20 Cyprian Consiglio and John Pennington at Mt. Irenaeus will = kick-off the=20 day-long celebration.

Consiglio = is a monk,=20 composer, singer, guitarist, teacher and author who is deep-seated = in=20 various scared chant traditions. Pennington is a percussionist who = specializes in drums and world music and is also a college = professor.=20 Together, these acoustic performers incorporate texts from various = sacred=20 and secular sources while instilling elements of chant and=20 drums.

A = celebration of the=20 Eucharist will follow the concert at 4:15 p.m. A buffet dinner and = a=20 concert continuing the spirit of the day with student musicians = will=20 conclude the day. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite = appetizer or=20 dessert to share. The main courses will be provided through the = generosity=20 of friends.

BonaResponds to hold Livestrong=20 event

As a part = of National=20 Livestrong Day, BonaResponds volunteers will be helping at the = homes of=20 local cancer survivors Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. But to do that they need = the=20 public=92s help in identifying area cancer survivors in need of = yard work or=20 light home repairs.

Livestrong = Day is the=20 Lance Armstrong Foundation=92s one-day initiative to raise = awareness and=20 funds for the cancer fight and to show support for the 28 million = cancer=20 survivors worldwide. The LAF=92s goal is to unite people affected = by cancer=20 in raising awareness of cancer issues on a global level and in = communities=20 across the country.

The Lance = Armstrong=20 Foundation focuses on cancer prevention, access to screening and = care,=20 research and quality of life for cancer survivors. Founded in 1997 = by=20 cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF has = raised=20 more than $250 million for the fight against cancer.

This year, = Livestrong=20 Day is Oct 2. Events and activities of all types will take place = around=20 the world in support of cancer survivors and their loved ones, = including=20 the BonaResponds local service weekend.

"Whenever = you get a=20 chance to team up with an organization that is as well established = and as=20 strong as Livestrong, you take it,=94 said Dr. Jim Mahar, = associate=20 professor of finance and founder of BonaResponds. =93In this case, = it is=20 even better since it is for such a great cause.=94

BonaResponds will=20 have volunteers working at multiple sites across the area with a = focus on=20 helping cancer survivors.

"It is = difficult to=20 keep things repaired and lawns taken care of in the best of = circumstances.=20 Now imagine how hard it is for those undergoing cancer treatments = or=20 caring for those who do have cancer,=94 said Mahar. =93If we can = do some of=20 those things, it will make things better for those fighting = cancer. They=20 can focus their energies on getting better.=94

In order = for=20 volunteers to help though, they need a little help finding them.=20 BonaResponds members are asking the public to refer any cancer = survivor or=20 current patient who could use some free help. Be it mowing the = lawn,=20 raking leaves, painting, or something else, BonaResponds would = like to=20 assist, organizers say.

BonaResponds also=20 plans to hold a bake sale to raise awareness of both BonaResponds = and=20 Livestrong. The profits of the bake sale will go to help fund = Livestrong=20 efforts around the globe.

The event, = like all=20 BonaResponds events, is open to all. Volunteers plan to work from = 3 until=20 7 p.m. on Friday. The bake sale will take place from 11 a.m. until = 2 p.m.=20 on campus, and then be moved to a work site. They will start work = again at=20 10 a.m. on Saturday and expect to be finished by 4 p.m.

Kristin = Paul,=20 lecturer in the Department of Finance, and Dr. Rodney Paul, = professor of=20 finance, had the paper =93Noise Trading and Pointspread Movements = in the=20 NCAA Football Betting Market=94 accepted for publication in the = Journal of=20 Business, Industry, and Economics.

Dr. = Barbara=20 Trolley, professor in the School of Education, is the lead = presenter among=20 her editorial board, addressing "A Marriage between Practice and=20 Publication: We're All in this Together." Trolley, the editor of = the New=20 York State School Counseling Journal, and her colleagues will be = making=20 this presentation in October 2009 at the annual New York State = School=20 Counselor Association Conference in Syracuse.

Dr. = Charles=20 Walker, professor of psychology, gave the keynote address at the = Fall=20 Convocation of Raritan Valley College in Somerville, N.J. He was = invited=20 to speak on "Constructive and Destructive Roles of Rumor & = Gossip=20 Within a College Community." In addition, he has had an article = accepted=20 for publication in the Journal of Positive Psychology titled = "Experiencing=20 Flow: Is Doing It Together Better Than Doing It Alone?" In this = article he=20 reports a program of three studies conducted over the last nine = years with=20 students in his social psychology laboratory. All three studies = support=20 the conclusion that experiencing flow alone is enjoyable but not = as=20 enjoyable as when experienced with others. His article will appear = in the=20 next issue of this leading journal in the new field of positive=20 psychology.
