      initiative was designed to create a campus culture in which =

      preventing and, if need be, containing a campus outbreak of H1N1 =

      swine flu virus.</FONT></P>

      the panic many people are succumbing to,=94 Gallison Blackstone =
said. =93We=20
      have to be thoughtful and deliberate about this. We have a =
committed=20
      campus community that is collaborating on the implementation of a=20
      comprehensive approach to prevention, education and =
treatment.=94</FONT></P>

and county=20
      health departments and the Centers for Disease Control are key =
partners in=20
      ensuring =93we utilize an evidence-based approach in all our =

      primary concern. Housekeepers are paying closer attention to the =
cleaning=20
      of =93high touch=94 areas such as doorknobs and stair railings, =

signs have=20
      already appeared across campus: temporary hand-sanitizing stations =
that=20
      will soon be replaced by permanent sanitizer dispensers. For those =

      taking prevention into their own hands, take note: only =
alcohol-based=20
      sanitizers are effective in fighting H1NI, Blackstone =
said.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Cleanliness =
is the=20
      most effective deterrent, she said. Local, state and federal =
health=20
      organizations are all stressing the same precautions:</FONT></P>

hands often=20
      with soap and warm water. Use alcohol-based hand cleansers in=20
      between.<BR>Avoid close contact with people who are ill.<BR>Stay =

      work or school if you are sick.<BR>Use tissue when you cough, =
sneeze or=20
      spit, and dispose of the tissue in a covered trash bin.<BR>If a =
tissue is=20
      not available, cough into your upper arm, NOT your hand.<BR>Keep =
hands=20
      away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or =
mouth.<BR>Clean=20
      shared spaces =97 such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering =
wheels and=20
      office equipment =97 before you use them.<BR>Refrain from sharing =
personal=20
      items such as forks, spoons, toothbrushes and =
towels.<BR></FONT></P>

Blackstone=20
      said students should visit Health Services, located in Doyle Hall, =
if they=20
      have a fever or are experiencing flu-like symptoms. Those people=20
      exhibiting flu-like symptoms will be kept isolated from other =
patients,=20
      she said.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Since =
almost all flu=20
      strains are viral, treatment for students exhibiting flu-like =
symptoms=20
      will be conventional for the first week: rest, fluids, isolation =
and fever=20
      reducers.</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Eating =
nutritious=20
      foods, getting enough rest, and exercising regularly are key =
components to=20
      preventing the flu, said Gallison Blackstone, who has worked with=20
      residence life staff to help educate students about swine =
flu.</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Posters =
have been=20
      distributed with flu-prevention tips and resident assistants have =
stressed=20
      swine flu awareness at floor meetings. Notice boards about swine =
flu=20
      prevention have been e-mailed several times since school resumed =
last=20
      week.</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The =
university=92s=20
      Emergency Preparedness Planning Group meets Friday for the first =
time this=20
      semester with swine flu preparedness the sole topic on the agenda. =
In the=20
      spring, the EPPG finalized emergency planning and communication =
protocol=20
      for a wide variety of emergencies, including a =
pandemic.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In the =
event of a=20
      communicable disease outbreak, the Cattaraugus County Health =
Department=20
      would be immediately notified. Depending on the scenario, =
recommendations=20
      from the county would be followed. At that time, response to such =

      would be under the direction of outside authorities, beginning =
with the=20
      county=92s Health Department.</FONT></P>

      strong foundation in the sciences thanks to Bona=92s =85 but the =

      and showing empathy are traits of great physicians and by =
cultivating=20
      these qualities at Bona=92s, I feel that I will be able to offer =
my patients=20
      much more than just a diagnosis.=94</FONT></P>

classes so=20
      far =93are a bit overwhelming. Time management and repetition are =
vital to=20
      success in medical school. But the courses are fascinating and =

students in=20
      the pre-health programs at Bonaventure to cherish their time as an =
