1970 Final 4 Team to present free youth basketball=20 clinic

Members=20 of St. Bonaventure's 1970 NCAA Final 4 team will hold a free, open = youth=20 basketball clinic on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the = Reilly=20 Center Arena.

The=20 clinic is open to boys who have not started seventh grade and = girls who=20 have not started ninth grade.There is no need for kids to = pre-register.=20 The former Brown Indian players who will host the clinic are Bob = Lanier,=20 Billy Kalbaugh, Matt Gantt, Paul Hoffman, Dale Tepas and Mike=20 Kull.

Fans/parents are welcome to attend, watch and = meet the=20 alumni players.

Special needs = expert to=20 headline Sept. 24 event

Nicholas Martin, founder and president of The = Center for=20 Accord Inc., will headline a conference Sept. 24 at St. = Bonaventure=20 University.

Accord=20 Inc. is a non-profit educational organization serving school = personnel and=20 parents. Martin is a staff development and conflict resolution = specialist=20 with extensive experience in building strong teams while = minimizing=20 conflict.

Martin=20 will talk about =93Preventing Conflict in the Education of = Children with=20 Special Needs: It=92s all about the Kids!=94 He will address = conflict=20 prevention, communication pitfalls, keys to diplomacy and = productive=20 alternatives.

The=20 conference, which includes a luncheon, will be held from 11:30 = a.m. to 4=20 p.m. in the Doyle Hall Dining Room.

Martin=20 speaks nationally and has provided seminars and workshops to = thousands of=20 people working on behalf of children with special needs, in both = English=20 and Spanish. His emphasis is always on making the complex simple = and=20 offering practical skills for making a positive = difference.

Martin=20 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973 with a = bachelor=92s=20 degree in psychology and from the University of Hartford in 1975 = with a=20 master=92s degree in clinical practices. He previously worked as a = juvenile=20 court psychologist, outpatient mental health counselor and dispute = mediator. He also taught dispute resolution at the graduate school = level.

Martin=20 is the author of =93An Operator=92s Manual for Successful Living: = A Guide to=20 Collaboration for IEP Teams and Strengthening Relationships When = Our=20 Children Have Special Needs=94; the book is available in Spanish = as=20 =93Fortaleciendo Relaciones Cuando Nuestros Ni=F1os Tienen = Necesidades=20 Especiales.=94 He has also published numerous articles.

Autism = program to begin=20 Sept. 3

St.=20 Bonaventure University=92s School of Education Counseling Clinic = will offer=20 group programs next month for families of children with autism = spectrum=20 disorders and related disabilities.

Starting Sept. 3, three programs will be = available: a social=20 skills group for youth identified with the disability, a social = group and=20 a sibling group.

Parents=20 will have opportunities to engage in discussion and support and=20 presentations on specific areas, such as disability services, = sibling=20 issues, educational communication and transitions.

Meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the = first Thursday=20 of each month at the Counseling Clinic in Plassmann Hall at the=20 university.

A=20 portion of each parent group will involve educational = presentations from a=20 variety of professionals.

On=20 Sept. 3, =93Advocating for Your Child with A Disability=94 will be = discussed=20 by representatives from the Rochester Advocacy Center. On Oct. 11, = =93Sibling Issues=94 will be discussed by the Parent Network of = WNY. On Nov.=20 5, =93Law Enforcement and Disability=94 will be the topic, = presented by=20 Timothy Whitcomb, Cattaraugus County Undersheriff. The Dec. 3 = topic is=20 still to be determined.

The=20 cost to participate is $25 per semester. Financial constraints = will not=20 prevent a family from group participation.

St. = Bonaventure University=20 named to list of Military Friendly Schools

St.=20 Bonaventure University has earned a place on the 2010 list of = Military=20 Friendly Schools, ranking it among the top 15 percent of colleges, = universities and trade schools that are doing the most to recruit = students=20 with military experience.

The=20 list was released Monday, Aug. 17, by G.I. Jobs magazine published = by=20 Victory Media, a veteran-owned business headquartered in = Pittsburgh, Pa.=20 In addition to publishing the annual Guide to Military Friendly = Schools,=20 the company issues other annual military friendly lists including = those=20 spotlighting corporations and other employers.

Schools have long valued veterans in the = classroom=20 because of their maturity, life experiences, diversity and = leadership.=20 That interest in veterans has only intensified with the recent = passage of=20 the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which made available tens of billions of = dollars in=20 tuition money.

=93This list is especially important now = because the=20 recently enacted Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually = unlimited=20 financial means to go to school,=94 said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs = publisher. =93Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided = they=92re=20 academically qualified. So schools are clamoring for them like = never=20 before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where = to get=20 educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted=20 friend.=94

Jim=20 DiRisio, director of undergraduate admissions at St. Bonaventure, = said=20 being included on the list is verification that the university = values the=20 veteran-student.

=93The team at G.I. Jobs put a great deal of = thought into=20 identifying the criteria that make a college friendly to veterans, = and I=20 am pleased that St. Bonaventure faired so well in the final = assessment,=94=20 said DiRisio. =93As a veteran myself, I would be inclined to = pursue=20 educational goals at a school that has demonstrated, and been = recognized=20 for, its commitment to veterans=92 needs.

As=20 a St. Bonaventure alumnus and member of the university=92s = administration, I=20 am even more pleased that St. Bonaventure has attained this kind = of=20 national distinction.=94

St.=20 Bonaventure is also a participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI = Education=20 Enhancement Program, which is designed to help students pay for = education=20 programs not covered by the Post-9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit. The = Yellow=20 Ribbon program essentially eliminates any difference between the = GI Bill=92s=20 educational benefit cap and the tuition rate at a private college = or=20 university.

Colleges and universities on the Military = Friendly=20 Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans = such as=20 on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse = programs=20 and more.

The=20 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through exhaustive = research=20 starting last May during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 = schools=20 nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were=20 developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Committee = consisting=20 of educators and administrators from Carnegie Mellon University, = the=20 University of Toledo, Duquesne University, Coastline Community = College and=20 Lincoln Technical Institute.

A=20 full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be=20 highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and = on a=20 poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands = of=20 active and former military personnel in September. St. Bonaventure senior = Charles=20 Specht named school's eighth Murray Scholar

St.=20 Bonaventure University senior Charles J. Specht has been named the = school=92s eighth Jim Murray Memorial Foundation = Scholar.

Specht is one of five winners of the = foundation=92s annual=20 nationwide essay contest among students from 28 invited = universities with=20 strong journalism programs. Each of the winners receives a $5,000=20 scholarship in memory of the late sportswriter Jim = Murray.

St.=20 Bonaventure has had more Murray Scholars than any other = participating=20 university since the foundation was established in = 1999.

=93Charlie is an outstanding student and = certainly=20 deserving of the award,=94 said Lee Coppola, dean of the Russell = J. Jandoli=20 School of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Bonaventure. = =93His=20 selection for the coveted Murray scholarship shows once again that = St.=20 Bonaventure ranks with the best in the world of journalism=20 education.=94

Specht, an editor with The Bona Venture, St.=20 Bonaventure=92s student newspaper, said he entered the university = as =93a=20 green freshman with an interest in the craft=94 of writing. He = credits his=20 growth to the =93encouragement and comradeship=94 of his = colleagues at the=20 school paper, the =93compassionate guidance=94 of the faculty of = the Jandoli=20 School, and the encouragement of alumni. =93I=92m honored to = represent the=20 Jandoli School and St. Bonaventure. I=92ve been truly blessed with = the=20 opportunity to learn from the most accomplished, passionate and=20 down-to-earth people I=92ve ever met,=94 he said.

A=20 native of Marilla, N.Y., and a graduate of Iroquois High School, = Specht is=20 a journalism/mass communication major and history minor. He is an = advisory=20 editor at The Bona Venture, where he has been a staff member since = fall of=20 2006. He previously served as the paper=92s sports editor, = managing editor=20 and editor-in-chief. He is working this summer as a features = intern at The=20 Buffalo News and has served internships with the Buffalo Bills and = the=20 Olean Times Herald.

Specht is also captain and president of St.=20 Bonaventure=92s club rugby team, a student leader and volunteer at = the=20 university=92s Mt. Irenaeus Franciscan retreat, and a former = resident=20 assistant in a residence hall.

Linda McCoy-Murray, president and founder of = the Jim=20 Murray Memorial Foundation, said the list of Murray Scholars grows = to 68=20 with the addition of this year=92s honorees.

=93We=20 are cultivating the cr=E8me of the crop at prestigious journalism = schools in=20 the nation,=94 she said. =93The Murray Scholars are marvelous = ambassadors for=20 the Foundation and inspire each other to strive for a higher = standard in=20 their writing and journalistic integrity, especially in this new = age of=20 electronic media.=94

McCoy-Murray established the Jim Murray = Memorial=20 Foundation to perpetuate her late husband=92s memory and his love = and=20 dedication to his extraordinary career in journalism. Murray, who = died=20 Aug. 16, 1998, began his illustrious career at the New Haven = (Conn.)=20 Register after graduating from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., = in=20 1943. After a stint at the now extinct Los Angeles Examiner, he = joined=20 Time & Life (now Time, Inc.).

In=20 1954, while the Hollywood cinema correspondent for Time magazine, = Murray=20 became one the founders of Sports Illustrated. He joined the Los = Angeles=20 Times in 1961. Murray won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1990, = and won=20 the National Sportswriter of the Year Award 14 times. His = outstanding work=20 landed him a spot in the writers=92 wing in the Baseball Hall of = Fame in=20 Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1988.

Joining Specht as new Murray Scholars this = year are=20 Amanda Anderson of the University of Maryland; Alyssa Rainbolt, = University=20 of Kansas; Andrew Pentis, Arizona State University; and Denise = Poventud,=20 Trinity College-Hartford.

The=20 sports journalists judging this year=92s competition were Sam = Farmer of the=20 Los Angeles Times; Bob Ford, Philadelphia Inquirer; Nancy Gay,=20 FanHouse.com-NFL and AOL-Time Warner; Tom Keegan, Lawrence Journal = World;=20 and Jay Privman, the Daily Racing Form. Only the students=92 names = appeared=20 on their essays, and not their school affiliations.

Grants from the McCormick Foundation, St. = Louis Rams,=20 NFL Charities, Linda McCoy-Murray, and private donations provided = this=20 year's scholarships.

U.S. News rankings tout SBU as a great=20 value

Generous scholarship and aid packages have earned = St.=20 Bonaventure University the No. 7 ranking on U.S.News & World = Report=92s=20 2010 list of best college values in the North.

The=20 average financial aid and scholarship package for an incoming St.=20 Bonaventure freshman is more than $22,000.

The=20 formula used to determine which colleges offer the best value = relates a=20 school=92s academic quality, as indicated by its 2010 U.S. News = ranking, to=20 the 2008=962009 academic year net cost of attendance for a student = who=20 receives the average level of need-based financial aid.

The=20 higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the = better the=20 deal, ranking officials said.

St.=20 Bonaventure=92s high ranking on the =93Great Schools, Great = Prices=94 list=20 correlated to its high overall rating in the category for northern = colleges that offer master=92s degrees. SBU jumped 13 spots from = 2009,=20 landing at No. 27 out of 176 institutions, placing it in the top = 15=20 percent.
