Sr.=20 Margaret named to top educator list

St. = Bonaventure=20 University President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., has been = named a=20 leading figure in education by Irish Voice newspaper. Sr. Margaret = is part=20 of the weekly newspaper=92s Irish Education 100 publication, a = list of=20 leading educators in North America.

=93The = Irish Education=20 100 is our inaugural effort to recognize the central role of = educators in=20 our history,=94 said Niall O=92Dowd, founding publisher of Irish = Voice. =93More=20 than a reflection of the past, we endeavor to build a creative=20 communication network that will strengthen Irish identity in the = 21st=20 Century with new collaborations, partnerships and friendships. We = view=20 educators as the central link with Ireland in our globalized=20 world.=94

A = lifelong=20 educator, Sr. Margaret came to Sr. Bonaventure University in 1997 = to serve=20 as a faculty member of its world-renowned Franciscan Institute. = Within two=20 years she was named dean and director. In 2004, she was named the = 20th=20 president of the university.

She was = the=20 leader in establishing the Father Mychal Judge Center for Irish = Exchange=20 and Understanding, a unique venture that will offer St. = Bonaventure=20 students, faculty, and cultural exchanges with the Republic of = Ireland,=20 Northern Ireland, and the United States, including academic study, = service=20 learning, co-curricular seminars, and research.

Proud = of her=20 Irish heritage, Sr. Margaret=92s maternal and paternal = grandparents were=20 born in Ireland and Sr. Margaret=92s sister, Sr. Sheila Carney, is = an=20 internationally-known expert on the life of Catherine McAuley, = foundress=20 of the Sisters of Mercy whose headquarters is in = Dublin.

Last = summer, Sr.=20 Margaret led a pilgrimage to Wexford to the ancestral lands and = parish of=20 the Devereux family. Nicholas Devereux, who emigrated to the U.S. = in 1806,=20 was the founding benefactor of the university. His family is well = known in=20 Wexford and beyond for its generosity to Catholic causes and = religious=20 orders.

Sr. = Margaret is=20 also well known in Franciscan circles and has lectured in Ireland = and at=20 the Shrine of Our Lady of Knock.

Sr. = Margaret was=20 the first woman to earn a doctorate from the Franciscan University = of=20 Rome. She studied in Europe after completing master=92s degrees in = theology=20 at Duquesne University and Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure=20 University.

A = leader with a=20 strong impulse for collaborative models, Sr. Margaret is working = with=20 Trustees and the university community to develop a 21st century = plan for=20 educational excellence in a student-centered learning=20 environment.

Sr. = Margaret=20 holds five honorary doctorates and is the recipient of a number of = other=20 honors. She holds leadership roles with the Association of = Catholic=20 Colleges and Universities, and the Association of Franciscan = Colleges and=20 Universities.

Joining = Sr.=20 Margaret on the Irish Education 100 list is St. Bonaventure = alumnus and=20 trustee Daniel F. Collins of Corning, vice president of corporate=20 communications at Corning Inc.

SBU students receive record number of study abroad=20 scholarships

Despite=20 the current economic crisis, the fall 2009 semester has resulted = in a=20 robust recruiting season, with 12 St. Bonaventure University = students=20 approved for study abroad, according to Alice Sayegh, director of=20 International Studies. Students were mindful of economic = challenges=20 impacted by loss of financial aid and the discontinuation of = funding from=20 certain external sources.

Of the = 12=20 students who will study abroad during fall 2009, seven have = received=20 external, largely competitive scholarship awards. Two students, = Shanequa=20 Ravenell, a senior management major from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Karim = Troncelliti, a sophomore Theater major from Allegany, received = Benjamin A.=20 Gilman International Scholarships from the U.S. Department of = State,=20 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administered through = the=20 Institute of International Education (IIE). Ravenell will spend a = semester=20 at Edge Hill University in Lancashire, England. Troncelliti will = spend the=20 fall semester at Nanjing University in Nanjing, China.

Two = students,=20 Kelsey Wrzos, a junior English major from West Seneca, N.Y., and = Keelan=20 O=92Connell, a senior biology major from Abilene, Texas, received = F. Donald=20 Kenney International Scholars scholarships from the F. Donald = Kenney=20 Foundation. Wrzos will spend the semester at National University = of=20 Ireland, Galway in Galway, Ireland. O=92Connell will study at the = University=20 of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland.

Two = students,=20 Catherine Turner, a sophomore, sociology/psychology major from = West=20 Hyannis Port, Mass., and Kyle Klosowski, a sophomore biology major = from=20 Ringwood, N.J., received a Kingston Scholarship from Kingston = University.=20 Turner and Klosowski will spend the semester at Kingston = University in=20 London, England.

Senior = Patrick=20 Boquard, a journalism/mass communication major from Severna Park, = Md.,=20 will spend the semester studying and interning at American = University in=20 Washington, D.C. He received a Dean=92s Scholarship from American=20 University.

=93We = have a=20 committed group of study abroad students for the fall. Those who = received=20 scholarship awards sifted through the added paperwork, wrote = essays, and=20 submitted required supplementary documentation to verify finances = in order=20 to secure their scholarships,=94 said Sayegh.

Notable = among the=20 scholarships is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. = During=20 the fall 2009 application cycle, the Gilman Scholarship Program = received=20 1,927 applications for 850 possible awards.

=93This = is a highly=20 competitive process and to have two students in the same semester = was a=20 huge surprise when we were notified,=94 added Sayegh.

The = remaining=20 five students have chosen unique locations that take in account = the cost=20 of programs while allowing the students to take courses required = for their=20 majors and gain valuable travel experience. Two students will be = spending=20 the semester at the Anglo-American College in Prague, Czech = Republic, and=20 three students will be studying at Macquarie University in Sydney, = Australia.

Science = students spend=20 summer working on biomedical research

Many=20 college students dream of spending their summers at their = respective=20 colleges and universities =97 places that represent future = careers,=20 friendship, fun and, of course, some freedom away from parents. = For three=20 St. Bonaventure University science majors, they are living that = dream by=20 spending a summer at Bona=92s and developing their own biomedical = research=20 projects.

These = students,=20 Thomas Zaikos, =9210, Devin Patel, =9210, and Aashish Kumar, = =9211, have been=20 awarded scholarships under The Dr. Arnold T. Borer Summer = Fellowship=20 Program to spend this summer conducting research on a topic of = their=20 choice.

Zaikos, a=20 biochemistry major from Unionville, Ontario, Canada, is no = stranger to=20 Bonaventure summers or research. This is his second year in the = fellowship=20 program.

=93To = receive this=20 award is truly amazing. To receive it a second year in a row is = just=20 unbelievable,=94 Zaikos said. =93I am more proficient and = comfortable in the=20 laboratory and research setting now. This summer I hope to = diversify my=20 knowledge by tackling a subject that is relatively foreign to me.=20 Hopefully, with this summer=92s work and future work, I will be = able to=20 discover an area that interests me enough to dedicate my time to = and focus=20 on in professional school.=94

That=92s = why Zaikos is=20 busy going green, hoping to discover a new source of renewable = energy in a=20 species of green algae called Neochloris Oleoabundans.

=93With = much discussion=20 and debate about global oil consumption and its ever-depleting=20 availability, renewable energy sources have become of great = interest to=20 many who are trying to discover an alternative and renewable = energy=20 source,=94 Zaikos said.

He is = focusing on the=20 algae=92s ability to produce sugars and fats under different = environmental=20 conditions. His goal is to find the optimal condition for this = organism to=20 produce biodiesel by extracting a number of different products, = such as=20 fats, starch and simple sugars.

ZAIKOS SAID = he is=20 grateful for his experiences as a fellow and couldn=92t do any of = this=20 without the support from the St. Bonaventure faculty, especially = his=20 research adviser Fredrick Harrington, visiting professor of=20 biology.

=93Professor Harrington=20 is basically what this project is about,=94 Zaikos said. =93From = the day he=20 came to Bona=92s last year you could tell he knew a great deal = about the=20 topic of renewable energy and is passionate about it. This = research is all=20 his and I am simply continuing his research this summer and trying = to=20 build upon the progress he has made up until this = point.=94

Harrington = hasn=92t=20 minded spending his summer in the lab either, working toward a = common goal=20 with his advisee.

=93Tommy is = hard=20 working and it is enjoyable spending time in the lab with him,=94 = Harrington=20 said. =93The long-term goal (of this project) is to culture the = algae as an=20 agricultural crop, which would use waste products like manure and = carbon=20 dioxide for growth and would produce biofuel components in a way = that is=20 much more efficient and does not compete with food crops like corn = and=20 soy.=94

DEVIN = PATEL, a=20 biology major from Harleysville, Pa., has been enjoying this = summer for=20 the whole package =97 living off campus, getting to know his = research=20 adviser, Dr. John Kupinski, associate professor of biology, and = shooting=20 hoops with the Bonnies women=92s basketball team, he = said.

=93I think = the most=20 exciting thing about receiving this fellowship is being able to = work with=20 Dr. Kupinski, a professor I haven=92t had a chance to take a class = with=20 previously or really interact with,=94 Patel said. =93I look = forward to=20 delving into his field of interest, immunology, and learning = something=20 new.=94

Patel is = spending his=20 summer researching a specific subject within immunology, a branch = of=20 biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the = immune=20 system in all organisms: the correlation between immune response = and=20 estrogen levels in females.

=93Epidemiological=20 evidence has shown that there may be a link between female sex = hormones,=20 of which estrogen is the most prominent, and autoimmune diseases, = such as=20 rheumatoid arthritis or osteoporosis,=94 Patel said.

Patel is=20 investigating this hypothesis using mice. He hopes his research = will=20 culminate in the publication of a research paper on behalf of the=20 university.

Much like = Zaikos and=20 Patel, Kumar, a biology major from Matthews, N.C., has been = enjoying the=20 company of the biology faculty outside the classroom. Kumar has = been=20 studying and researching Cadherin-11, a protein that has been = implicated=20 in metastatic cancer and may also play a role in the development = of the=20 mammary gland, under the advisement of Dr. Julie Hens, assistant = professor=20 of biology.

=93Dr. Hens = is very=20 knowledgeable in her field, and thus it is quite a delight to work = with=20 someone who has so much experience with different laboratory = techniques,=94=20 Kumar said. =93She is extremely passionate about her research as = it can=20 potentially serve a dramatic purpose to the advancement of cancer=20 research.=94

Together, = Hens and=20 Kumar hope their research may lead to cancer cures.

=93WE ARE = HOPING that=20 these studies will increase our understanding of metastatic cancer = both in=20 the mammary gland and also in the lung,=94 Hens said. =93Working = and teaching=20 (Aashish) in the laboratory has been a pleasure. He is quick to = learn, and=20 works well in the laboratory setting. I believe he will go far in = whatever=20 career path he takes in medicine.=94

Kumar said = he is=20 honored for being chosen for the fellowship.

=93By = participating in=20 the fellowship I will be able to gain a better understanding of = what=20 actually goes on behind the scenes of what research actually = entails, and=20 how it is the basis of creating what may eventually be a cure for = cancer,=94=20 he said.

After = graduation, all=20 three students plans to attend medical school at George Washington = University in Washington, D.C. This summer has prepared them for = that next=20 step, they said, which is what the Borer Summer Fellowship Program = is all=20 about: preparing students for their future in medicine and the = future of=20 medicine.

The Dr. = Arnold T.=20 Borer Summer Fellowship Program was made possible in 1992 through = a major=20 gift to the University by Gertrude Borer and her son, Francis = =93Frank=94 E.=20 Borer, =9269. The fund was established in honor of her late = husband, Arnold.=20 Borer Fellows are chosen because they have achieved the highest = science=20 and math GPAs and have a potential interest in biomedical=20 research.

Police agencies sign MOA with=20 university

Countless hours of preparation and = practice=20 became policy Monday afternoon when four police agencies signed an = Emergency Preparedness Law Enforcement Memorandum of Agreement at = St.=20 Bonaventure University.

The MOA = puts on paper=20 the =93common understanding and agreement of each other=92s = responsibilities=20 and roles in the event that there is an emergency situation at St. = Bonaventure,=94 said Rick Trietley, vice provost for student life = and head=20 of the university=92s Emergency Preparedness Planning = Group.

Signing the = MOA were=20 representatives from the New York State Police, Cattaraugus County = Sheriff=92s Department, and the Olean and Allegany police = departments, as=20 well as Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., university = president.

Representing the=20 police agencies were Major Christopher Cummings of the New York = State=20 Police; Sheriff Dennis John of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff=92s=20 Department; Allegany Police Chief Dominic Papasergi; and Sgt. = Michael=20 Vitello of the Olean Police Department.

State = Assemblyman=20 Joseph Giglio and Sister Margaret also spoke.

=93When we = began this=20 process, some doubted that we could ever achieve the level of = cooperation=20 and collaboration that would be necessary to develop and implement = this,=94=20 Trietley said. =93Well, I am proud to say that we did not = experience any of=20 that negative energy. Rather, I observed a group of professionals=20 dedicated to only one thing =97 the safety and security of all = members of=20 this campus community in the event of a life-threatening emergency = here at=20 St. Bonaventure.=94

Comprehensive=20 emergency planning began in earnest at the university in = September, and=20 culminated with a campuswide disaster drill and lockdown March 25=20 involving a shooter and hostage scenario. More than 60 area police = and=20 emergency responders took part in the drill.

=93I feel = very good=20 about what we have accomplished,=94 Trietley said. =93This = agreement helps=20 take guesswork out of the process should an actual emergency = occur. This=20 should give students, their parents and the campus community a = sense of=20 security that there is a plan in place.=94

SBU's Quick=20 Center galleries being readied for new season=20

Several = galleries at=20 The Quick Center have been closed for the installation of new = exhibitions=20 for the center=92s upcoming 2009-10 season. Remaining open and on = view=20 throughout the summer are St. Bonaventure=92s permanent collection = of=20 European and American paintings located in the Dresser Foundation = Gallery=20 on the first floor, and the 20th Century Works exhibition in the=20 Dresser-Rand Atrium.

All = galleries=20 will reopen for the new season on Friday, Sept. 4.

The = Quick Center=20 is open to the public year round at no charge. Regular hours are = 10 a.m.=20 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and=20 Sunday.

Stevens takes=20 over MBA program

John B. = Stevens took=20 over June 1 as the director of the master=92s in business = administration=20 program at St. Bonaventure University.

Stevens = replaces=20 Brian McAllister, an assistant professor of accounting.

An = instructor in=20 SBU=92s School of Business, Stevens is an organizational = development,=20 training and human resources professional. He also owns and = operates JB=20 Stevens Organizational Solutions.

Stevens, of = Olean,=20 has over 30 years=92 experience in positions involving = organizational=20 development, administration, human resources, communications and = public=20 relations.

Stevens=92 = past=20 experience includes vice president for human resources at The=20 Rehabilitation Center; director of the Achievement Center for = Continuous=20 Learning at St. Bonaventure; manager of training and employee = development=20 at CUTCO Corporation; training manager for AVX Corporation; and = training=20 specialist for Dresser-Rand Corporation.

Stevens is = a Senior=20 Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), recognized by the Society = for=20 Human Resource Management (SHRM); and a Certified Performance = Technologist=20 (CPT), recognized by the International Society for Performance = Improvement=20 (ISPI). He holds a master=92s degree in business and policy = studies from=20 SUNY-Empire State College and a bachelor=92s degree in journalism = from St.=20 Bonaventure.

He is a = past=20 president of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, serves on = the=20 Cattaraugus-Allegany County Workforce Investment Board, and is = president=20 of the Leadership Cattaraugus program.

Dr. = Charles=20 Walker, professor of psychology, with four seniors,=20 Jillian Coniglio, Catherine Cuviello, Keely Sibbald=20 and Elizabeth Thomeier, presented their = research=20 on slander gossip at the national meeting of the Association for=20 Psychological Science held in San Francisco. Their study found = that=20 slander gossip is a disguised form of shame gossip that is = illegitimately=20 used by revengeful individuals. The majority of gossip is a = truthful form=20 of social news passed within groups to monitor actual changes in=20 interpersonal relationships. Slander gossip is a lie or distortion = of the=20 truth passed to harm others.

Dr. Walker also co-facilitated = a=20 session on positive psychology and higher education at the First = World=20 Congress on Positive Psychology recently held in Philadelphia. Two = juniors, Sarah Specchio and Andrea=20 Spink, and 2008 graduate James Wood, = also=20 attended the conference of this promising new international = organization=20 in psychology.
