      the current economic crisis, the fall 2009 semester has resulted =

      robust recruiting season, with 12 St. Bonaventure University =

      approved for study abroad, according to Alice Sayegh, director of=20
      International Studies. Students were mindful of economic =
challenges=20
      impacted by loss of financial aid and the discontinuation of =
funding from=20
      certain external sources.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Of the =

      students who will study abroad during fall 2009, seven have =
received=20
      external, largely competitive scholarship awards. Two students, =

      Ravenell, a senior management major from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Karim =

      Gilman International Scholarships from the U.S. Department of =

      Foundation. Wrzos will spend the semester at National University =

      Turner and Klosowski will spend the semester at Kingston =

      Boquard, a journalism/mass communication major from Severna Park, =

      will spend the semester studying and interning at American =

      Washington, D.C. He received a Dean=92s Scholarship from American=20

      committed group of study abroad students for the fall. Those who =
received=20
      scholarship awards sifted through the added paperwork, wrote =
essays, and=20
      submitted required supplementary documentation to verify finances =
in order=20
      to secure their scholarships,=94 said Sayegh.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>Notable =
among the=20
      scholarships is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. =
During=20
      the fall 2009 application cycle, the Gilman Scholarship Program =
received=20
      1,927 applications for 850 possible awards.</FONT></P>

is a highly=20
      competitive process and to have two students in the same semester =
was a=20
      huge surprise when we were notified,=94 added Sayegh.</FONT></P>

remaining=20
      five students have chosen unique locations that take in account =
the cost=20
      of programs while allowing the students to take courses required =
for their=20
      majors and gain valuable travel experience. Two students will be =

      the semester at the Anglo-American College in Prague, Czech =
Republic, and=20
      three students will be studying at Macquarie University in Sydney, =

      St. Bonaventure University science majors, they are living that =
dream by=20
      spending a summer at Bona=92s and developing their own biomedical =
research=20
      projects.</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">These =
students,=20
      Thomas Zaikos, =9210, Devin Patel, =9210, and Aashish Kumar, =
=9211, have been=20
      awarded scholarships under The Dr. Arnold T. Borer Summer =
Fellowship=20
      Program to spend this summer conducting research on a topic of =
their=20
      choice.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Zaikos, a=20
      biochemistry major from Unionville, Ontario, Canada, is no =
stranger to=20
      Bonaventure summers or research. This is his second year in the =
fellowship=20
      program.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93To =
receive this=20
      award is truly amazing. To receive it a second year in a row is =
just=20
      unbelievable,=94 Zaikos said. =93I am more proficient and =
comfortable in the=20
      laboratory and research setting now. This summer I hope to =
diversify my=20
      knowledge by tackling a subject that is relatively foreign to me.=20
      Hopefully, with this summer=92s work and future work, I will be =
able to=20
      discover an area that interests me enough to dedicate my time to =
and focus=20
      on in professional school.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">That=92s =
why Zaikos is=20
      busy going green, hoping to discover a new source of renewable =
energy in a=20
      species of green algae called Neochloris Oleoabundans.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93With =
much discussion=20
      and debate about global oil consumption and its ever-depleting=20
      availability, renewable energy sources have become of great =
interest to=20
      many who are trying to discover an alternative and renewable =
energy=20
      source,=94 Zaikos said.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">He is =
focusing on the=20
      algae=92s ability to produce sugars and fats under different =
environmental=20
      conditions. His goal is to find the optimal condition for this =
organism to=20
      produce biodiesel by extracting a number of different products, =
such as=20
      fats, starch and simple sugars.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">ZAIKOS SAID =
he is=20
      grateful for his experiences as a fellow and couldn=92t do any of =
this=20
      without the support from the St. Bonaventure faculty, especially =
his=20
      research adviser Fredrick Harrington, visiting professor of=20
      biology.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif">=93Professor Harrington=20
      is basically what this project is about,=94 Zaikos said. =93From =
the day he=20
      came to Bona=92s last year you could tell he knew a great deal =
about the=20
      topic of renewable energy and is passionate about it. This =
research is all=20
      his and I am simply continuing his research this summer and trying =
to=20
      build upon the progress he has made up until this =
point.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Harrington =
hasn=92t=20
      minded spending his summer in the lab either, working toward a =
common goal=20
      with his advisee.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Tommy is =
hard=20
      working and it is enjoyable spending time in the lab with him,=94 =
Harrington=20
      said. =93The long-term goal (of this project) is to culture the =
algae as an=20
      agricultural crop, which would use waste products like manure and =
carbon=20
      dioxide for growth and would produce biofuel components in a way =
that is=20
      much more efficient and does not compete with food crops like corn =
and=20
      soy.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">DEVIN =
PATEL, a=20
      biology major from Harleysville, Pa., has been enjoying this =
summer for=20
      the whole package =97 living off campus, getting to know his =
research=20
      adviser, Dr. John Kupinski, associate professor of biology, and =
shooting=20
      hoops with the Bonnies women=92s basketball team, he =
said.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93I think =
the most=20
      exciting thing about receiving this fellowship is being able to =
work with=20
      Dr. Kupinski, a professor I haven=92t had a chance to take a class =
with=20
      previously or really interact with,=94 Patel said. =93I look =
forward to=20
      delving into his field of interest, immunology, and learning =
something=20
      new.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Patel is =
spending his=20
      summer researching a specific subject within immunology, a branch =
of=20
      biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the =
immune=20
      system in all organisms: the correlation between immune response =
and=20
      estrogen levels in females.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif">=93Epidemiological=20
      evidence has shown that there may be a link between female sex =
hormones,=20
      of which estrogen is the most prominent, and autoimmune diseases, =
such as=20
      rheumatoid arthritis or osteoporosis,=94 Patel said.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Patel is=20
      investigating this hypothesis using mice. He hopes his research =
will=20
      culminate in the publication of a research paper on behalf of the=20
      university. </FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Much like =
Zaikos and=20
      Patel, Kumar, a biology major from Matthews, N.C., has been =
enjoying the=20
      company of the biology faculty outside the classroom. Kumar has =
been=20
      studying and researching Cadherin-11, a protein that has been =
implicated=20
      in metastatic cancer and may also play a role in the development =
of the=20
      mammary gland, under the advisement of Dr. Julie Hens, assistant =
professor=20
      of biology.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Dr. Hens =
is very=20
      knowledgeable in her field, and thus it is quite a delight to work =
with=20
      someone who has so much experience with different laboratory =
techniques,=94=20
      Kumar said. =93She is extremely passionate about her research as =
it can=20
      potentially serve a dramatic purpose to the advancement of cancer=20
      research.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Together, =
Hens and=20
      Kumar hope their research may lead to cancer cures.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93WE ARE =
HOPING that=20
      these studies will increase our understanding of metastatic cancer =
both in=20
      the mammary gland and also in the lung,=94 Hens said. =93Working =
and teaching=20
      (Aashish) in the laboratory has been a pleasure. He is quick to =
learn, and=20
      works well in the laboratory setting. I believe he will go far in =
whatever=20
      career path he takes in medicine.=94</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Kumar said =
he is=20
      honored for being chosen for the fellowship.</FONT></P>

participating in=20
      the fellowship I will be able to gain a better understanding of =
what=20
      actually goes on behind the scenes of what research actually =
entails, and=20
      how it is the basis of creating what may eventually be a cure for =
cancer,=94=20
      he said.</FONT></P>

graduation, all=20
      three students plans to attend medical school at George Washington =

      University in Washington, D.C. This summer has prepared them for =
that next=20
      step, they said, which is what the Borer Summer Fellowship Program =
is all=20
      about: preparing students for their future in medicine and the =
future of=20
      medicine.</FONT></P>

Arnold T.=20
      Borer Summer Fellowship Program was made possible in 1992 through =
a major=20
      gift to the University by Gertrude Borer and her son, Francis =

husband, Arnold.=20
      Borer Fellows are chosen because they have achieved the highest =
science=20

      emergency planning began in earnest at the university in =
September, and=20
      culminated with a campuswide disaster drill and lockdown March 25=20
      involving a shooter and hostage scenario. More than 60 area police =

      emergency responders took part in the drill.</FONT></P>

      about what we have accomplished,=94 Trietley said. =93This =

      take guesswork out of the process should an actual emergency =
