Summer=20 Evenings of Re-Creation to open anniversary celebration at Mt.=20 Irenaeus

Mt. = Irenaeus will=20 open its annual Summer Evenings of Re-Creation series on = Wednesday, June=20 24, with a session hosted by two of the Franciscan Mountain = retreat=92s=20 founding friars.

The series = of six=20 Wednesday gatherings on the retreat=92s hilltop acreage in = Allegany County,=20 some 25 miles from the St. Bonaventure University campus, will = also serve=20 as the opening of a year-long silver anniversary celebration, = marking the=20 retreat=92s 25th year at its town of West Clarksville = location.

What began = as a=20 summertime retreat housed in an off-campus dormitory on Union = Street in=20 Allegany has grown into a sprawling hilltop community of friars = devoted to=20 providing a place for spiritual reflection. The 387-acre site = includes a=20 large community house, a chapel, cabins and 10 miles of = trails.

Fr. Dan = Riley,=20 O.F.M., guardian of Holy Peace Friary at Mt. Irenaeus, who began = the=20 summertime retreats in Allegany 27 years ago with Fr. Dan Hurley, = O.F.M.,=20 said the anniversary celebration will include a special overnight = retreat=20 in the fall with a concert, outdoor Mass and guest educator, and = will=20 close with another big event in the summer of 2010. Other events = will be=20 held throughout the year =93to celebrate what it is we=92re doing = and to take=20 our mission out to others,=94 said Fr. Dan. Additional information = about all=20 events will be announced as details are finalized.

The Summer = Evenings=20 of Re-Creation, which are free and open to all, will establish the = theme=20 of the anniversary celebration by focusing on the need to =93begin = anew,=94=20 said Br. Kevin Kriso, O.F.M., a member of the friar community at = Mt.=20 Irenaeus and coordinator of the evening series.

=93It=92s a = phrase St.=20 Francis used near the end of his life,=94 said Br. Kevin. = =93It=92s a reminder=20 that in spiritual terms it=92s always today, that we need to begin = again to=20 go back to those things that have always been important, but that = we=20 sometimes forget are important.=94

Each of the = summer=20 sessions will revolve around a theme that is fundamental to the = Mt.=20 Irenaeus mission, but each will also take a course determined in = large=20 part by the participants, said Br. Kevin. =93Someone will = hopefully open up=20 a topic that=92s going to be important in everybody=92s lives and = give folks a=20 chance to experience it, and to think and talk about it in terms = of our=20 fundamental values,=94 he said.

Each of the = evenings=20 will open with Mass at 4:45 p.m., followed by a dish-to-pass = supper at 6=20 p.m. After supper, participants will walk to the chapel for the = evening of=20 reflection, lasting from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

June 24: An = overview=20 of Mt. Irenaeus and its mission, presented by Fr. Dan Riley, Fr. = Dan=20 Hurley, and Larry and Bonnie Orsini.
July 8: =93Silence and = Solitude,=94=20 presented by Fr. Bob Struzynski, O.F.M., and Vic Vena.
July 15: = =93Simplicity,=94 presented by Fr. Dan Riley, Br. Joe Kotula, = O.F.M., and=20 others.
July 22: =93Service,=94 presented by Br. Kevin and = Bridget=20 Walsh.
July 29: =93Hospitality of the Heart,=94 presented by = the Fr. Louis=20 McCormick, O.F.M., and others.
Aug. 5: =93Community and Nature = as Healing=20 Places,=94 presented by Br. Joe, Vic Vena and = others.

County = undersheriff to=20 lead Office of Safety and Security

Cattaraugus = County=20 Undersheriff Timothy Whitcomb will take over as the director of = the=20 university's Office of Safety and Security on Jan. 18, = 2010.

Interim = director=20 Joe Stomieroski will continue in his role until Whitcomb begins = his duties=20 at the start of the spring semester.

Whitcomb has been=20 with the County Sheriff's Department since 1991, serving as = undersheriff=20 since 2005. He's also been an adjunct lecturer at St. Bonaventure = and JCC=20 since 1996, the last three at SBU teaching courses in criminology = and=20 juvenile delinquency.

"The = addition of Tim=20 Whitcomb as the director of Safety and Security is a home run for = St.=20 Bonaventure," said Rick Trietley, vice provost for student life. = "Tim=20 possesses outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills that = will serve=20 our students, faculty and staff extremely well. His charisma, = leadership=20 philosophy and passion for excellence are exactly what is required = to take=20 the Safety and Security department to the next level of service to = our=20 campus community."

Whitcomb holds=20 degrees from Genesee Community College, Empire State College and = St.=20 Bonaventure, where he earned a master's in counselor education = (2001).=20 He's also graduated from Erie Community College's Police Services = Training=20 Academy and the FBI's National Academy in Quantico, Va.

Whitcomb was=20 valedictorian for Leadership Cattaraugus' class of = 2008.

"I can = think of=20 no one more qualified than Tim to take on the demands of managing = the St.=20 Bonaventure campus security program, where interacting with = colleagues in=20 both the law enforcement and academic communities is a daily = need," said=20 Brent Issacson, special agent with the FBI. "Tim knows both = communities=20 and cultures so very well."

Also, = longtime=20 security officer Ralph Aloia has been named to the new position of = Fire=20 and Life Safety Officer. Aloia, who has 14 years of fire safety=20 experience, has worked at St. Bonaventure for 23 years.

Aloia = becomes the=20 second-ranking member of the Campus Safety and Security Office.=20
