      junior, will attend a program in physics at the University of =

      Troy Mulholland, a sophomore, will participate in a physics =

      <BR><BR><BR>Students selected for the competitive Research =
Experiences for=20
      Undergraduates (REU) program conduct research at a number of host =
colleges=20
      or universities across the nation. The REU appointments, awarded =
to=20
      students studying science, engineering or mathematics, are among =
the most=20
      prestigious summer programs available to =
undergraduates.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><BR>=93The =
program was=20
      started by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a way of =
getting=20
      undergraduates involved in the type of research projects that are =
funded=20
      by the NSF at the large research institutions in the United =
States,=94 said=20
      Dr. John F. Neeson, chair of the Department of Physics at St. =
Bonaventure.=20
      =93It is a realistic recognition by the NSF of the fact that large =
research=20
      institutions benefit from the talent pool of students that is =
developed in=20
      a spectrum of institutions that exist in the =

will spend=20
      10 weeks at the University of Idaho doing research with an active =
research=20
      group composed of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and=20
      undergraduate students. His award includes a $4,500 stipend, =
housing and=20
      travel expenses.</FONT></P>

      10-week program at the University of Florida includes a $4,700 =
stipend as=20
      well as housing and travel expenses. He will participate in 30 =

      research per week under the supervision of a faculty =

      University, published her dissertation on technology integration =

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The book, =
=93Technology=20
      Instruction and Integration: Beyond Skills,=94 highlights how =
teachers may=20
      incorporate a well-known pedagogical strategy, peer tutoring with=20
      technology instruction and integration, to yield outcomes that go =
beyond=20
      technological skills.</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">While =
researching the=20
      book, Thompson found it interesting that the teachers in her =
research=20
      acknowledged the benefits of a collaborative approach to =
technology=20
      instruction and integration.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif"><BR>However, she=20
      said, =93They (teachers) expressed concerns about the likelihood =
that=20
      predominant use of this technique may interfere with their =
accountability=20
      for students=92 learning.=94</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">She found =
that the=20
      more experienced teachers in her sample group are confident about =
their=20
      technology abilities and generally perceive this competence as an =
asset to=20
      their instructional responsibilities. One teacher in the over-50 =
age=20
      category noted, =93I always liked to give technology instruction=20
      individually then use peer tutors with specific =
students.=94</FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thompson =
believes it=20
      is important that teachers be aware of the varying technological=20
      competence of students in a class. This may range from a =
student=92s=20
      inability to simply log on to a computer to students being able to =
build=20
      Web sites with several interactive features. A peer tutoring =
approach to=20
      technology instruction or integration can expand the range of =
learning=20
      outcomes to include the more discreet but equally important =
affective=20
      skills such as cooperation, tolerance and self-esteem. </FONT></P>
      <P></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93I hope =
readers,=20
      particularly teachers, will acknowledge that many students, being =
born in=20
      the technological age, may be more technologically perceptive than =
they=20
      are,=94 said Thompson. This difference, she added, is ideal for =
cooperative=20
      learning.</FONT></P>

      work includes multicultural literature as part of a balanced =

Army ROTC=20
      program will host its 2009 Commissioning Ceremony on Saturday, May =
16, for=20
      six new second lieutenants going into the U.S. Army.</P>
      <P></P>
      <P>It will be the first commissioning ceremony at St. Bonaventure =
under=20
      the leadership of Lt. Col. Thomas G. Leitch, professor of military =

      science, who assumed command of the ROTC unit last June. Lt. Col. =
Leitch=20
      and Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., university president, =
will=20
      address the newly commissioned lieutenants and their families.</P>
      <P></P>
      <P>Immediately after the ceremony, the new second lieutenants will =

      participate in the silver dollar salute, a tradition in which each =
hands a=20
      shiny silver dollar to the first soldier who salutes him or her. =
Those who=20
      will be commissioned include:</P>

        <LI>Jay G. Beeman II, a physics major from Bradford, Pa. Beeman =
enrolled=20
        in the Reserve Officers=92 Training Corps (ROTC) as a freshman, =

        a four-year scholarship to St. Bonaventure University. He is a =

        of the United States Army Airborne School. Upon completion of =
the=20
        Leadership Development and Assessment Course, he was selected =

        commissioning as an engineer officer. As an ROTC cadet, he =
served as the=20
        battalion commander, battalion operations officer, Gold Bar Club =
vice=20
        president, and Ranger Challenge Team captain. Beeman is the son =
of Jay=20
        and Carla Beeman.=20
        <LI>Joshua M. Bode, a political science major from Dunkirk, N.Y. =

        enrolled in ROTC as a freshman, receiving a two-year scholarship =

        Bonaventure University. Upon completion of the Leadership =

        and Assessment Course, he was selected for commissioning as a =

        enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2004 and was =

        He attended Officer Candidates School in the summers of 2007 and =

        Once commissioned, he will spend six months in the Basic School =

        received a four-year ROTC scholarship at St. Bonaventure =

        selected for commissioning as a field artillery officer. As an =
