Two SBU students = chosen for=20 prestigious research=20 program

Two St. Bonaventure = University=20 students have been selected to participate in a highly competitive = summer=20 research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. =

Jacob = Donius, a=20 junior, will attend a program in physics at the University of = Idaho, while=20 Troy Mulholland, a sophomore, will participate in a physics = program at the=20 University of Florida.

Students selected for the competitive Research = Experiences for=20 Undergraduates (REU) program conduct research at a number of host = colleges=20 or universities across the nation. The REU appointments, awarded = to=20 students studying science, engineering or mathematics, are among = the most=20 prestigious summer programs available to = undergraduates.

=93The = program was=20 started by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a way of = getting=20 undergraduates involved in the type of research projects that are = funded=20 by the NSF at the large research institutions in the United = States,=94 said=20 Dr. John F. Neeson, chair of the Department of Physics at St. = Bonaventure.=20 =93It is a realistic recognition by the NSF of the fact that large = research=20 institutions benefit from the talent pool of students that is = developed in=20 a spectrum of institutions that exist in the = country.=94

Donius = will spend=20 10 weeks at the University of Idaho doing research with an active = research=20 group composed of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and=20 undergraduate students. His award includes a $4,500 stipend, = housing and=20 travel expenses.

Mulholland=92s=20 10-week program at the University of Florida includes a $4,700 = stipend as=20 well as housing and travel expenses. He will participate in 30 = hours of=20 research per week under the supervision of a faculty = member.

Both = programs=20 include seminars, workshops, field trips and free time for = students to=20 explore their locales.

=93We are = delighted=20 that Jacob and Troy have been chosen to participate in the summer = 2009=20 programs,=94 said Neeson. =93They join a list of students = representing our=20 Department of Physics that goes back to the inception of the = program over=20 20 years ago. The faculty views our students=92 participation in = the program=20 as a way of evaluating our best students but also as a means of = evaluating=20 the training we provide them.=94

Donius = is the son=20 of Robert and Kim Donius of Alfred Station, N.Y. Mulholland is the = son of=20 Timothy and Belinda Mulholland of Dewittville, N.Y.

Faculty=20 member publishes dissertation on technology integration in the=20 classroom

Claudette Thompson, = D.Ed., an=20 assistant professor in the School of Education at St. Bonaventure=20 University, published her dissertation on technology integration = and=20 instruction.

The book, = =93Technology=20 Instruction and Integration: Beyond Skills,=94 highlights how = teachers may=20 incorporate a well-known pedagogical strategy, peer tutoring with=20 technology instruction and integration, to yield outcomes that go = beyond=20 technological skills.

While = researching the=20 book, Thompson found it interesting that the teachers in her = research=20 acknowledged the benefits of a collaborative approach to = technology=20 instruction and integration.

However, she=20 said, =93They (teachers) expressed concerns about the likelihood = that=20 predominant use of this technique may interfere with their = accountability=20 for students=92 learning.=94

She found = that the=20 more experienced teachers in her sample group are confident about = their=20 technology abilities and generally perceive this competence as an = asset to=20 their instructional responsibilities. One teacher in the over-50 = age=20 category noted, =93I always liked to give technology instruction=20 individually then use peer tutors with specific = students.=94

Thompson = believes it=20 is important that teachers be aware of the varying technological=20 competence of students in a class. This may range from a = student=92s=20 inability to simply log on to a computer to students being able to = build=20 Web sites with several interactive features. A peer tutoring = approach to=20 technology instruction or integration can expand the range of = learning=20 outcomes to include the more discreet but equally important = affective=20 skills such as cooperation, tolerance and self-esteem.

=93I hope = readers,=20 particularly teachers, will acknowledge that many students, being = born in=20 the technological age, may be more technologically perceptive than = they=20 are,=94 said Thompson. This difference, she added, is ideal for = cooperative=20 learning.

Thompson=92s scholarly=20 work includes multicultural literature as part of a balanced = literacy=20 program, urban teacher preparation, and teaching for critical=20 thinking.

She holds a = D.Ed. in=20 education, curriculum and instruction from Indiana University of=20 Pennsylvania, a master's degree in adult education and = communications=20 technology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a = bachelor's=20 degree in history with social Sciences from the University of the = West=20 Indies.

Six to receive = commissioning at=20 U.S. Army ROTC ceremony

The St. Bonaventure University U.S. = Army ROTC=20 program will host its 2009 Commissioning Ceremony on Saturday, May = 16, for=20 six new second lieutenants going into the U.S. Army.

It will be the first commissioning ceremony at St. Bonaventure = under=20 the leadership of Lt. Col. Thomas G. Leitch, professor of military = science, who assumed command of the ROTC unit last June. Lt. Col. = Leitch=20 and Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., university president, = will=20 address the newly commissioned lieutenants and their families.

Immediately after the ceremony, the new second lieutenants will = participate in the silver dollar salute, a tradition in which each = hands a=20 shiny silver dollar to the first soldier who salutes him or her. = Those who=20 will be commissioned include:

Jay G. Beeman II, a physics major from Bradford, Pa. Beeman = enrolled=20 in the Reserve Officers=92 Training Corps (ROTC) as a freshman, = receiving=20 a four-year scholarship to St. Bonaventure University. He is a = graduate=20 of the United States Army Airborne School. Upon completion of = the=20 Leadership Development and Assessment Course, he was selected = for=20 commissioning as an engineer officer. As an ROTC cadet, he = served as the=20 battalion commander, battalion operations officer, Gold Bar Club = vice=20 president, and Ranger Challenge Team captain. Beeman is the son = of Jay=20 and Carla Beeman.=20
Joshua M. Bode, a political science major from Dunkirk, N.Y. = Bode=20 enrolled in ROTC as a freshman, receiving a two-year scholarship = at St.=20 Bonaventure University. Upon completion of the Leadership = Development=20 and Assessment Course, he was selected for commissioning as a = military=20 police officer. As an ROTC cadet, he has served as the battalion = logistics officer and Alpha Company executive officer. Bode is = the son=20 of Cheryl Kaminski.=20
Timothy J. Condello, a sociology major from Rochester, N.Y. = Condello=20 enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2004 and was = deployed to=20 Iraq in 2005. He enrolled in the Leadership Course in his = freshman year.=20 He attended Officer Candidates School in the summers of 2007 and = 2008.=20 Once commissioned, he will spend six months in the Basic School = at=20 Quantico, Va., to determine his military occupational specialty. = Condello is the son of James and Kate Condello.=20
Solomon Hannan, a political science major from Avoca, N.Y. = Hannan=20 received a four-year ROTC scholarship at St. Bonaventure = University. He=20 is a graduate of the United States Army Airborne School. Upon = completion=20 of the Leadership Development and Assessment Course, Solomon was = selected for commissioning as a field artillery officer. As an = ROTC=20 cadet, he has served as the battalion commander and Alpha = Company=20 commander. Hannan is the son of Peter and Judy Hannan.=20
Alan V. Morganti, a political science major from Cleveland, = Ohio.=20 Morganti enrolled in ROTC as a freshman and received a = three-year=20 scholarship at St. Bonaventure University. He is a graduate of = the=20 United States Army Airborne School. Upon completion of the = Leadership=20 Development and Assessment Course, Morganti was selected for=20 commissioning as an engineer officer. As an ROTC cadet, he has = served as=20 the battalion executive officer, Bravo Company commander, and = the Gold=20 Bar Club president. Morganti is the son of Andrea and Alan = Morganti.=20
Michael J. Reilly, a political science major from = Wilmington, Del.=20 Reilly enrolled in ROTC as a freshman and received a three-year=20 scholarship at St. Bonaventure University. He is a graduate of = the=20 United States Army Airborne School. Upon completion of the = Leadership=20 Development and Assessment Course, he was selected for = commissioning as=20 an infantry officer. As an ROTC cadet, he has served as the = Alpha=20 Company commander and the Bravo Company commander. Reilly is the = son of=20 Thomas and Linda Reilly.

Four students inducted = into Pi Mu=20 Epsilon

Four = St.=20 Bonaventure University sophomores were recently inducted into Pi = Mu=20 Epsilon, the National Honorary Mathematics Society.

Courtney = Bosse, from=20 Carmel, Ind., John Hasper, a physics major from Great Valley, = N.Y., Nicole=20 Markert, a mathematics major from Auburn, Ohio, and Troy = Mulholland, a=20 physics major from Dewittville, N.Y., make up this year=92s class = of=20 inductees.

All four = students=20 have excelled not only in mathematics, but in their own specific = fields of=20 study as well.

The = National Honorary=20 Mathematics Society, Pi Mu Epsilon, was established at Syracuse = University=20 in 1914. Since its founding the honorary has expanded to 300 = chapters in=20 North America. St. Bonaventure belongs to the New York Omega=20 chapter.

The goal of = the=20 society is to encourage intellectual and scholarly activity among=20 mathematics students.

To be = inducted one=20 must be an undergraduate with two years of math courses, including = calculus, with a B average, and a ranking in the top one-third of = the=20 class. One can also be inducted if he is a sophomore math major = with at=20 least three semesters of math courses, including calculus, with an = A in=20 every course, and must rank in the top one-fourth of the=20 class.

Newsmakers for = Spring=20 2009

Dr. John Mulryan, Board of Trustees = Professor=20 of English, attended and participated in the Northeast Milton = Seminar,=20 which met at Dartmouth College in April. He has also received a = $1,000=20 grant to pursue research on Milton and Dante at the University of=20 Illinois.
