All Bonaventure Reads = Committee=20 announces 2009=20 book

=93Listening is an = Act of Love=94=20 was selected by the All Bonaventure Reads =9209 committee for the = incoming=20 class of 2013. The announcement came after months of researching = and=20 reviewing 73 other books.

=93Listening is an Act=20 of Love=94 is a collection of stories compiled by the nonprofit = organization=20 StoryCorps, currently one of the largest oral history projects in = the=20 nation. StoryCorps is a mobile story booth that travels around the = country=20 recording poignant stories and interviews that everyday people = wish to=20 share. Their conversations are recorded on a free CD as well as = preserved=20 at the Library of Congress.

Dave Isay, = founder of=20 the StoryCorps, selected a handful of these stories to be = published in=20 =93Listening is an Act of Love.=94 The book contains dialogues = from everyday=20 people about aspects of American life. Their stories are divided = into four=20 sections in the book: Home and Family, Work and Dedication, = Journeys,=20 Histories and Struggle, and Fire and Water.

=93The = committee chose=20 this book because there is something in it for every reader,=94 = said=20 committee chair Jean Trevarton Ehman, director of the Teaching and = Learning Center. =93The intriguing and heartfelt stories are = particularly=20 important for incoming freshmen because they show how experiences = can bind=20 us despite differences in backgrounds or families.=94

The book = will be=20 distributed at Orientation to first-year students, and they will = be=20 encouraged to complete it prior to the start of school in the = fall.=20 Students will engage in conversations and activities throughout = Welcome=20 Days, University 101 courses and various campuswide events that=20 incorporate the book and the theme of =93meaningful encounters = with a=20 difference.=94

The = committee=20 encourages the SBU community to read the book as well as = participate in=20 campus discussions and events that will go along with = it.

Olean parish=20 meets special need with $2,500 donation to SBU's Warming=20 House

When Fr. James = Vacco, O.F.M.,=20 learned of the need for more meat products at the Warming House = soup=20 kitchen in Olean, he turned to parishioners at St. John=92s=20 Church.

They = responded=20 with donations totaling $2,500, enough to put meat on the Warming = House=20 table for the next four or five months.

=93Their generosity=20 is overwhelming, it=92s a dream come true,=94 said Trevor = Thompson, director=20 of the Warming House, which has operated as an outreach/service = ministry=20 of St. Bonaventure University since 1974 and is believed to be the = oldest=20 student-run soup kitchen in the nation.

Fr. = James, an=20 instructor in St. Bonaventure=92s Clare College and administrator = of St.=20 John=92s Parish, asked parishioners to donate to the meat fund as = a Lenten=20 sacrificial offering. Some 100 =93Meat The Need=94 envelopes were = picked up by=20 parishioners.

=93Perhaps they=20 gave up purchasing a cup of coffee at work and placed that money = in the=20 =91Meat The Need=92 envelope instead,=94 said Fr. James. =93It all = adds=20 up.=94

But no = one=20 expected it to add up to so much.

=93When = the=20 secretary at the church counted the returned envelopes on the = Monday of=20 Holy Week I was elated,=94 said Fr. James.

Most = donations to=20 the Warming House are canned or non-perishable food items, said = Thompson,=20 estimating it costs anywhere from $25 to $40 per day to put meat = on the=20 table.

He = attended=20 Masses at St. John=92s last weekend to thank the=20 parishioners.

St. Bonaventure = University=20 inducted 29 students into Betta Gamma Sigma on Thursday, April 30, = at the=20 University Club.

Betta Gamma = Sigma is=20 a national honor society for business and management programs = accredited=20 by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business = (AACSB).=20

An election = to a=20 lifetime membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest honor a = business=20 student can receive in either an undergraduate or a master=92s=20 program.

The 2009 = graduate=20 student inductees are: Noelle Barth, Kimberly Schulz, Sarah = Bosworth, Iben=20 Soltau, Thomas DelPozzo, Shawn Sood, Antonio Farias, Spencer = Southern,=20 Jason Lippmann, Jonathan Spaugh, Kenneth Lish, Christy Sullivan, = Amanda=20 Miles, David Talarico, Michael Mleczak, Penny Tirpak, Benjamin = Nida and=20 Colleen White.

The = undergraduate=20 student inductees are: Mark Auteritano, Katharine Holly, Robert = Chatt,=20 Michelle Laiacona, Julie Cotton, Stephen Lapp, Terence Cretekos, = Kieran=20 Malone, Elizabeth Farwell, Gianna Viele and Kathleen = Guiton.

Dr. John G. = Watson,=20 dean of the School of Business, served as the master of ceremonies = with=20 remarks given by Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., university=20 president, and Dr. Michael Fischer, provost and vice president for = Academic Affairs. Dr. Zahid Y. Khairullah, chapter president and = faculty=20 adviser, gave the concluding remarks.

2009 Girls and Women = in Sports Day=20 another huge success

Some 300 area high = school=20 students from across the region spent a day on campus running, = jumping,=20 climbing, kicking, passing, swimming and dribbling as part of the = May 1=20 Girls and Women in Sports Day. The number of participants = surpassed last=20 year=92s attendance of 250 students from 10 = schools.

Throughout = the Sports=20 Day Celebration, members and coaches from St. Bonaventure=92s = varsity=20 athletic teams, women=92s rugby team and ROTC program conducted = clinics for=20 the female students from 12 area high schools. From 9:30 a.m. to = 2:30=20 p.m., athletes and coaches taught skills from their respective = sports.=20 Participants chose from softball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, = women=92s=20 rugby, tennis, swimming or an Army fitness challenge.

The = student-athletes=20 also heard from freestyle wrestler and 2012 Olympic hopeful Leigh = Jaynes,=20 who gave the keynote address.

Representatives from=20 the area high schools called the event another huge = success.

=93The = climbing wall=20 and fitness testing gave the girls a chance to showcase their = strength and=20 have fun doing it. They enjoyed all the clinics and interaction = with=20 actual SBU team members. The girls were impressed with not only = the=20 athletic achievements but the academic achievements of the = athletes,=94 said=20 Martha Torrey of Allegany-Limestone High School.
=93Our 21 = girls had a=20 fabulous day,=94 shared Laurie Edmonston-Cuddy, principal at = Hinsdale=20 Central.
=93Our girls thoroughly enjoyed their day. Some chose = their=20 favorite sports while others learned more about new ones. It was a = great=20 opportunity to bring the many female athletes from the area = together to=20 enjoy a day of familiar activities and a chance to make new = friends,=94 said=20 Tammy Eddy of Ellicottville Central.
Organizer Dr. Paula Scraba = of=20 SBU's Department of Physical Education offered her thanks "for the = collaboration and cooperation from various University programs.The = participation of SBU teams and athletes again was a = highlight."

"I thank = our=20 colleagues in the Army Reserves for providing Lt. Jaynes and our = other=20 guests from the U.S. Training Program in Colorado to be with us = for the=20 day. The message provided by all our speakers to these young=20 student-athletes is to work hard, focus on your studies, and = follow your=20 dream. It was our pleasure to host the event and we look forward = to=20 working with our local school districts for a program next year," = added=20 Scraba.

Commencement speaker = chosen for=20 class of 2009

St. Bonaventure = University=20 senior Ellen Grimes of Clinton, N.Y., will address her classmates = and=20 guests as the 2009 undergraduate student speaker of the = University=92s 149th=20 Commencement Exercises May 17.

She hopes = her address=20 will help her classmates gain a bit of confidence in this = uncertain phase=20 that a lot of them are in right now.

=93I=92m = amazed at what=20 we=92ve been able to accomplish during what have been four very = short years.=20 Our class is so compassionate and giving; it really distinguishes = us from=20 all the rest. Our time at Bonaventure will no doubt carry us into = the=20 future and enable us for even greater accomplishments,=94 said = Grimes, a=20 marketing major

Grimes is = vice=20 president for the Class of 2009, a member of the women=92s rugby = team, is in=20 the Pacioli Scholars Program for the School of Business and has = been a=20 resident assistant for the past three years. She has been a member = of=20 Concert Choir and Chamber Singers since her freshman year, is the=20 president of SBU=92s music ministry and was a First Year Mentor in = the=20 School of Business.

Following = graduation,=20 Grimes will pursue her master=92s of business administration = degree at St.=20 Bonaventure.

Commencement=20 Exercises will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 17, in the Reilly = Center=20 Arena.

Carole = McNall,=20 assistant professor of journalism and mass communication, was = among=20 presenters of focus sessions at a workshop presented April 30, = 2009, by=20 the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors. The workshop, open = to staff=20 members of non-daily newspapers, was held at the Pennsylvania = Newspaper=20 Association offices in Harrisburg, Pa. McNall led discussions on = ethics in=20 journalism at two afternoon sessions. Other speakers at the = afternoon=20 sessions were JoAnne Harrop of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, = speaking on=20 writing about sports and fashion, and Donald Gilliland of the = Potter=20 Leader-Enterprise and Edit Hughes of Trib Total Media, offering = ideas for=20 surviving in a shrinking media market.

Morning = sessions=20 included one on Pennsylvaia=92s new right to know law, given by = Terry=20 Mutchler of the state Office of Open Records; on maintaining = enthusiasm=20 for journalism, by Gil Smart of Lancaster Newspapers; and on the = power of=20 the non-daily press, by Michael Capuzzo of Mountain Home=20 magazine.

Dr. Rodney = Paul,=20 associate professor of economics in the Department of Finance, is = giving=20 an invited presentation at the Conference of the Arbeitskreis=20 Sport=F6konomie (Sport and Urban Economics Conference) in Berlin, = Germany=20 May 8-9, 2009. The paper being presented is =93Regional = Differences in Fan=20 Preferences for Minor League Sports,=94 which was one of 30 papers = selected=20 in a competitive process from economists around the world. The = paper=20 focuses on the similarities and differences in fan demand for = minor league=20 baseball and hockey in various regions of the country.

Dr. Paula = Scraba of=20 the Department of Physical Education presented a Build with Living = Stones=20 Session for the Allegany Franciscan Associates on May 3, 2009, at = St.=20 Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany. The title of the presentation was = =93Francis, Clare and the Franciscan Family.=94 This begins a = series of Build=20 with Living Stones Sessions to be conducted throughout the year. = Scraba is=20 a member of the National Board for Build with Living Stones, a = Franciscan=20 Heritage series sponsored by the Franciscan Institute.

Dr. Carol = B.=20 Wittmeyer, assistant professor of management sciences, presented a = session=20 at the annual National Shoe Retailer Association titled = =93Preparing for=20 Succession: What Will Your Legacy Be?=94 The meeting was held = April 30,=20 2009, at St. Pete Beach, Fla.
