      Allegany, N.Y., conducted research on =93The Pervasiveness, =
Truthfulness,=20
      and Negativity of Slander Gossip.=94 The study closely examined =
gossip,=20
      specifically slander gossip, and its prevalence in human=20
      conversation.</FONT></P>

anxious to=20
      help with such a cool concept,=94 Coniglio said.</FONT></P>

      study were asked to supply examples, and then rate five types of =
gossip=20
      &shy;=97 slander, shame, envy, sympathy and respect =97 on scales =

      truthfulness, pervasiveness and negativity. Next, the research =

      analyzed the content and tried to attribute each type of gossip =
with a=20
      social function. The most common functions found were =
entertainment,=20
      discernment of group norms, increasing group solidarity and =
hurting=20
      others.</FONT></P>

      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Walker said =
that=20
      gossip is a =93response to changes in social relationships caused =
by the=20
      behavior of others. It is the way we monitor and construct our =
social=20
      reality.=94 However, =93slander gossip appears to be a deceitful =
device of=20
      individuals who use the grapevine for personal gains, not simply =
keeping=20
      abreast with the latest scuttlebutt.=94</FONT></P>

of this=20
      study showed that slander gossip occurs more frequently than these =

      researchers expected but far less often than shame =
