Acclaimed sports = writer Mark=20 Kriegel is the keynote speaker at this month=92s Dick Joyce Sports = Symposium=20 at St. Bonaventure University.

Free and = open to the=20 public, the symposium begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the=20 auditorium of the new William F. Walsh Science Center. This = year=92s topic=20 is =93How Television Views and Covers Sports.=94

After the = keynote,=20 Kriegel will join Chris LaPlaca, senior vice president for = corporate=20 communications at ESPN, and Steve Arvan, director of Time Warner = Cable=20 SportsNet, on a panel to take questions from the audience. LaPlaca = is a=20 1979 SBU graduate.

Other = distinguished=20 SBU journalism alums will be on hand for morning workshops, = including=20 Adrian Wojnarowski, =9291, who will join fellow Yahoo! Kriegel, = formerly of=20 the New York Daily News, is the national columnist for = FOXSports.com and=20 the author of two New York Times best sellers: =93Namath: A = Biography=94 and=20 =93Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich,=94 which Sports Illustrated = called =93the=20 best sports biography of the year.=94

Kriegel has = been a=20 columnist at the New York Post, New York Daily News, a = contributing writer=20 for Esquire magazine, and the author of a novel, =93Bless Me = Father.=94 He=20 grew up in New York City and lives in Santa Monica, Calif., with = his=20 daughter.

The = symposium, held=20 on campus every other spring, is named in honor of the late = Richard =93Dick=94=20 Joyce, a 1960 graduate of St. Bonaventure. Joyce worked for United = Press=20 International, NBC and the New York World-Telegram & Sun = before=20 joining The Associated Press in 1968.

The = Brooklyn native=20 covered horse racing and college basketball for the AP for 20 = years. Joyce=20 died in 1988 at the age of 53.

The John = Domino Award=20 will be presented at the symposium to a St. Bonaventure graduate = who has=20 excelled in the field of sports journalism and communication. The = winner=20 won=92t be revealed until the day of the event.

Domino = graduated from=20 St. Bonaventure in 1984 and worked for NBC Sports before joining = ESPN. He=20 was regarded as one of the growing sports network=92s brightest=20 personalities when he left to return to the Buffalo area to join = the=20 Empire Sports Network.

Domino told = friends=20 he was coming back to Buffalo because someone in the family was = battling=20 cancer. He never said it was him. Domino died in 1994.

Students to=20 present program on "Climate Change = Awareness''

St. Bonaventure = students=20 Alyssa Sparatta, =9209, Morgan Beacker, =9210, and Johnathan = Nuttall, =9209,=20 will present a talk on =93Climate Change Awareness=94 at 7 p.m. on = Tuesday,=20 April 21, in the auditorium of the William F. Walsh Science=20 Center.

The = presenters hope=20 to facilitate a discussion in order to educate the community about = a=20 person=92s relationship with the environment, and stimulate ideas = of how=20 people can make their lives more sustainable.

=93We = believe that=20 climate change is an important issue facing the world today. = Universities=20 in the United States have a special responsibility to address the = issue,=94=20 Sparatta said.

This event = is free=20 and open to the public and is sponsored by the Franciscan Center = for=20 Social Concern at St. Bonaventure University.

VITA exceeds last = year's=20 record

St. Bonaventure = University=20 accounting students have successfully completed another tax = season,=20 gaining valuable work experience while helping the local=20 community.

Students in = VITA,=20 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, set a new record with $750,000 in = tax=20 refunds for local taxpayers this year, a near 25 percent increase = from=20 last year=92s total of $600,000.

VITA allows = students=20 to provide free income tax preparation and E-filing to local = community=20 members with low or moderate income who are eligible for Earned = Income Tax=20 Credit.

=93VITA is = an=20 outstanding educational experience for our students,=94 said Dr. = Susan=20 Anders, CPA, professor of accounting and VITA supervisor. =93We = are=20 preparing real tax returns for real taxpayers, and bringing real = refund=20 dollars into the community.=94

Other = schools only=20 dedicate a few weekends to VITA, but St. Bonaventure students = spend eight=20 weeks in the local community, acting as a commercial tax = preparation firm.=20

=93We were = comparable=20 to a small- to mid-sized accounting firm for the eight weeks of = our tax=20 season,=94 Anders said. =93For those eight weeks, we had the = equivalent of=20 five full-time tax professionals working 40 hours a = week.=94

Each year, = VITA works=20 with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Bonaventure = Accounting=20 Association to gather 80 students who work a combined total of = 2,000=20 volunteer hours during tax season.

The = completion of the=20 2009 tax season marks VITA=92s sixth year, totaling 1,500 tax = returns with=20 $2.35 million in tax refunds.

VITA also = works with=20 the United Way of Cattaraugus County and Department of Social = Services to=20 set up an advertised tax preparation site at the Olean = Mall.

Syracuse Symphony = Orchestra=20 returns to SBU's Quick Center with violinist Philippe=20 Quint

Syracuse Symphony = Orchestra,=20 conducted by Samuel Wong and featuring violinist Philippe Quint, = will=20 perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, at St. Bonaventure = University=92s=20 Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

The concert = is being=20 presented by Friends of Good music in association with The Quick=20 Center. = Quint=20 will perform the rhapsodic Violin Concerto in D-Major by Erich = Wolfgang=20 Korngold. The evening will also feature the popular symphony = =93From the New=20 World=94 by Dvor=E1k.

Syracuse = Symphony=20 Orchestra began in 1961 as a community orchestra and quickly = evolved into=20 a fully professional resident orchestra serving central and = northern New=20 York state. Coming concert highlights include a debut with the = Weimar=20 Staatskapelle, as well as a series of recitals in London, = Edinburgh,=20 Boston, Atlanta, Nancy (France) and Carnegie Hall in New = York.

He will = also release=20 two CDs on the Naxos label: John Corigliano=92s world premiere = recording of=20 =93The Red Violin Caprices,=94 as well as the Korngold Violin = Concerto with=20 Carlos Miguel Prieto conducting the Orchestra de Mineria. His = debut album=20 including William Schuman=92s Violin Concerto earned him two = Grammy Award=20 nominations.

For each = Friends of=20 Good Music performance, The Quick Center galleries open an hour = before the=20 performance and remain open throughout intermission. BonaResponds ready for = largest=20 service weekend

BonaResponds, St. Bonaventure University=92s disaster relief = group, is at=20 it again and calling all volunteers for its first three-day Local = Service=20 Weekend, April 24-26.

The group is ready to end the semester on a high note, = enjoying the=20 spring weather while helping the St. Bonaventure, Olean and = Allegany=20 communities before exam time begins.

=93The local service days show that we don=92t have to = travel 2,600=20 miles to make a difference,=94 Dr. Jim Mahar, associate professor = of finance=20 and founder of BonaResponds, said. =93There are plenty of = opportunities to=20 change lives around here.=94

The Local Service Weekend will begin on Friday morning, = when=20 Liberty Partners, a group of about 50 at-risk students from Olean, = will=20 visit St. Bonaventure to experience life on a college campus. St.=20 Bonaventure student volunteers will give campus tours and educate = the high=20 school students on college life.

These students and volunteers will also participate in a = project=20 modeled after the national No Child Left Inside program, which = promotes=20 wellness through physical activity. Activities will include = hiking,=20 kickball and volleyball.

Friday will end around 4 p.m. with a cleanup at Mt. = Hermanns in=20 conjunction with the Olean Hiking Group.

On Saturday and Sunday, BonaResponds will work at several = sites,=20 including Allegheny River Valley Trail, Cattaraugus County SPCA, = City of=20 Olean, Bob=92s Woods, Mt. Irenaeus and St. Bonaventure. Volunteers = will be=20 spread throughout a wide variety of projects, including = landscaping,=20 painting community areas and rebuilding houses.

On Saturday, volunteers will meet at 10:30 a.m. in Dresser=20 Auditorium in the John J. Murphy Professional Building. At 4:30 = p.m., the=20 day will end with a free barbeque for volunteers. Similarly, on = Sunday the=20 day will start at 11 a.m. in the auditorium and end at 5 p.m. with = a=20 barbeque. Volunteers will receive bagged lunches both days.

The group expects the weekend to draw its largest number of = volunteers for its local service days yet. Even BonaResponds = celebrities=20 will be in attendance, including Randy and Debbie May, founders of = Randy=92s=20 Rangers, one of the first disaster-relief camps established in = Mississippi=20 after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. The group has worked with = Randy=20 several times and even helped build the current volunteer camp in = Pass=20 Christian, Miss.

In addition, BonaResponds recently launched its new Web = site at=20 www.bonaresponds.org. Here, volunteers can sign up for one day or = the=20 whole weekend.

BonaResponds was created in the aftermath of Hurricane = Katrina. It=20 has taken more 500 volunteers around the country and led just as = many=20 volunteers in service projects throughout Western New York. = BonaResponds=20 aims to be a world-class organization whose mission is to help = people in=20 need as well as to build better leaders and better communities. = The group,=20 comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni and local residents, = is run=20 completely through donations.

Dr. Robert Amico, = professor of=20 philosophy, was an invited speaker at the =93Whiteness and = Privilege=20 Symposium=94 at California State University at Long Beach on April = 14, 2009.=20 His paper is titled "The Costs of White Privilege."

Student = Brianna N.=20 Bricker of Albion, Pa., had a paper titled =93Sponsorship in = College=20 Football Bowls=94 accepted in the online version of the new St. = Bonaventure=20 journal of student academic writing. Her paper, nominated by Dr. = Michael=20 Russell, also received an honorable mention award.

Dr. Carl J. = Case,=20 professor of management science, Darwin L. King, professor of = accounting,=20 and Kimberly DeSimone, lecturer of marketing, presented their = paper=20 =93Virtual Worlds: An Exploratory Study of Undergraduate Behavior = =94 at the=20 Allied Academies 2009 Spring International Conference held in New = Orleans,=20 La., on April 8-10, 2009. The paper was also published in the = Academy for=20 Studies in Business Proceedings.
