      a $9,500 grant from the Canadian government to support the =
development of=20
      Canadian content courses, including a six-credit course for summer =

      2010.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The course =
features a=20
      two-week trip to four major cities in Canada. About $5,000 of the =
grant=20
      will help defray travel expenses for the students who take the =
course, now=20
      being developed by Carter and Dr. Jeff Slagle, assistant professor =
of=20
      English.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The course =
=97 a=20
      seminar version of the World Views course (CLAR 108) taught every =
fall by=20
      Carter =97 will be merged with a section of Arts and Literature =
(CLAR 109)=20
      to account for the six credits. Both courses are Clare College =
(core=20
      program) requirements for all St. Bonaventure students, but are =
offered=20
      each semester in a number of sections and taught by several =
different=20
      faculty members.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Carter=92s =
section of=20
      World Views focuses on identity and intergroup contact in general, =
but=20
      uses the United States-Canada border and international relations =
as a=20
      point of emphasis. The new summer course will focus on comparisons =
of the=20
      United States and Canada, as well as their international=20
      relations.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">How the =
Arts and=20
      Literature course will be integrated into the curriculum has yet =
to be=20
      determined, Carter said.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Course time =
spent in=20
      Canada will include sessions with both countries=92 diplomatic =
corps,=20
      politicians, practitioners, members of the tourism industry, and=20
      professors in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City, as well =
as visits=20
      to relevant museums and landmarks.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The =
remaining $4,500=20
      of the grant will be used to research the development of the class =
and the=20
      procurement of course materials, the cultivation of contacts for =
student=20
      trips, and the creation of a plan of study for the course. Some of =

      Carter=92s research will be devoted to enhancing two existing =
classes:=20
      Canadian Politics (POLS 370) and his traditional section of World =
Views=20
      (CLAR 108).</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Carter=92s =

      follows a $5,000 Program Enhancement Grant received last fall to =
promote=20
      the development of Canadian Studies at the university. These funds =
are=20
      being used to support guest speakers as well as the development of =

      Canadian Studies concentration within the new International =
Studies major.=20
      </FONT></P>

      also support the new International Relations concentrations in =

      a non-descript house on Wayne Street, made $5.85 an hour in 1975, =
his 38th=20
      and final year at Dresser Industries.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A simple =
man of=20
      modest means, Frank T. Gelsomino Jr. died Aug. 13, 2007. His =
legacy will=20
      be felt in Olean forever.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Scrimping =
and=20
      investing wisely, tracking TV stock tickers faithfully and making =
daily=20
      calls to his broker, Gelsomino amassed a fortune and made sure two =
pillars=20
      of the community =97 St. Bonaventure University and Olean General =
Hospital =97=20
      were the richer for it. He left the university more than $1.6 =
million and=20
      donated $700,000 to the hospital.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif">Gelsomino=92s=20
      generosity was remembered Friday by both institutions, first at a =
midday=20
      reception at St. Bonaventure, and then at the dedication of a =
Gelsomino=20
      family portrait =97 painted by Sharon Long =97 at Olean General. =
Relatives and=20
      friends of Gelsomino attended both events.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Words =
could never=20
      adequately convey what this remarkable man has done for us,=94 =
said Sr.=20
      Margaret Carney, O.S.F., university president. =93I had the =
pleasure of=20
      sitting down and talking with him at length before he passed away =
and I=20
      was so impressed with his desire to help others get the education =
he was=20
      unfortunately denied.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Great =
Depression=20
      struck just as Gelsomino was about to graduate from Olean High =
School.=20
      College wasn=92t an option.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Near the =
end of his=20
      life, macular degeneration robbed Gelsomino of most of his vision, =
but he=20
      never lost sight of his desire to help others after he was gone. =
His=20
      donation to St. Bonaventure established the Gelsomino Family =
Scholarship=20
      Fund. Some of Gelsomino=92s wealth came from inheritances from his =
parents=20
      and sisters.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93It was =
his desire=20
      that his donation could help local students attend St. Bonaventure =
who=20
      might not otherwise be able to,=94 said SBU=92s Bob Keenan, who =
helped=20
      Gelsomino set up the scholarship fund.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Townhouse =
21 on the=20
      east side of campus has been renamed Gelsomino House in honor of =
Frank and=20
      his family, Keenan said.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93That was =
his wish,=94=20
      Keenan said. =93I was showing him the townhouses one day and a =
student was=20
      nice enough to give us a tour (of Townhouse 21). That=92s why he =
picked that=20
      one.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Gelsomino =
also had a=20
      heart for health care and, through the Olean General Hospital =
Foundation,=20
      he set up the Gelsomino Family Endowment in memory of his parents, =
Frank=20
      and Catherine Gelsomino, and his sisters Josephine and Eleanor, =
all of=20
      whom he credited for making his gifts possible.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Through =
this=20
      endowment, the Gelsomino family=92s desire to provide =
state-of-the-art=20
      health care for generations will come to fruition. Five percent =
[of the=20
      endowment] annually in perpetuity will fund critical equipment and =

      important projects of the future in their name,=94 said Karen =
Fohl, OGH=20
      Foundation president.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, =
sans-serif">Gelsomino=92s enduring=20
      legacy will be the love he felt for the place he lived for nearly =
a=20
      century, Fohl said.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Frank =
was not a=20
      famous person, or a world traveler or a business leader. Instead, =
Frank=20
      was like most of the thousands of us who live and work in this =
community,=20
      weaving a simple tapestry in life that might be indistinguishable =
from all=20
      the others being woven around him,=94 Fohl said. =93He served his =
country as a=20
      soldier, he dearly loved his parents and sisters, and he weathered =

      difficult economic times.</FONT></P>

made Frank=20
      Gelsomino=92s life stand apart from so many others, and what =
ultimately=20
      cemented his lasting legacy, was his generosity to his community =

five=20
      students and Professor Pauline Hoffmann worked in the small, =
impoverished=20
      community of Bethlehem to establish a micro-finance agency to =
improve=20
      local conditions. Embrace It Africa is a project of St. =
Bonaventure=92s=20
      award-winning Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) =
chapter.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The group =
spent two=20
      weeks at the Bethlehem Parents School and Orphanage, where they =
worked=20
      with students, teachers and community members in an effort to =
alleviate=20
      the problem of poverty through long-term economic=20
      sustainability.</FONT></P>

return to=20
      school in August 2008, the Embrace It Africa group has continued =
to raise=20
      funds and awareness in preparation to return to Uganda this May. =

      same: to reach out to the community of Bethlehem and provide =

      and his mother, Arkadina, is a famous actress who is uninterested =

      is in love with Arkadina=92s love interest, Trigorin. The play =
tells their=20
      story and how people have the tendency to reject love that is =
freely given=20
      and seek it where it is withheld.<BR><BR>=93The play is about =
people=20
      struggling to find love and the mistakes they make on the way,=94 =

      Ed. Simone, chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts =

      first full-length Chekhov play produced at SBU in more than 40 =
