      University faculty member Dr. Phillip G. Payne explores how Warren =

      Harding=92s name became synonymous with corruption, cronyism, and=20
      incompetence and how it is used to this day as an example of what =
a=20
      president should not be.</FONT></P>

book, =93Dead=20
      Last: The Public Memory of Warren G. Harding=92s Scandalous =
Legacy,=94 was=20
      published by Ohio University Press (January 2009). </FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Payne =
traces the=20
      history of Harding=92s image from the election of 1920 to the =
current debate=20
      over George W. Bush=92s place in history examining such things as=20
      presidential rankings, commemoration and legacy formation, =
political uses=20
      of history and memory, and the role of scandal in popular and =
political=20
      culture.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93Harding =
is generally=20
      considered among the worst of the presidents, typically ranking =
dead last=20
      or as a failure in presidential rankings,=94 said Payne, associate =
professor=20
      of history at St. Bonaventure.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ironically, =
Payne=20
      explained, during the 1920 election the Republican campaign =
carefully=20
      crafted an image of Harding as a small-town civic booster. The =
Harding=20
      campaign made effective use of modern techniques to craft =
Harding=92s image=20
      that enabled Harding and the Republicans to win a landslide =
victory. When=20
      Harding died in August 1923 he was widely popular. He was =
commemorated=20
      with a memorial, the last significant presidential memorial =
campaign=20
      conducted before the advent of the modern presidential library=20
      system.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93However, =
it was not=20
      an image that would last. The revelations of scandals soon ruined=20
      Harding=92s reputation. Harding would become an icon of =
presidential=20
      failure,=94 said Payne.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Payne =
teaches courses=20
      in United States and public history at St. Bonaventure. Prior to =
joining=20
      the university faculty in 1998, he worked as the historic site =
manager at=20
      President Warren G. Harding=92s Home and Museum in Marion, =
Ohio.</FONT></P>

      project I envisioned writing a book on Buddhist ethics for Western =

      readers, utilizing the conceptual framework of philosophical =

      Western intellectual tradition,=94 said Reilly, a 40-year =

      philosophy at St. Bonaventure University. =93What was particularly =

      surprising, and really transformed my project as it developed, was =
my=20
      recognition of deep similarities between the fundamental truths of =

      Buddhist ethics and fundamental teachings of Jesus and certain =
theological=20
      interpretations of them.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">=93My book =
sheds light,=20
      I think, on the meaning of =91The Golden Rule,=92 the story of the =
Good=20
      Samaritan, the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard, and on a =

      points made by well-known Christian (mainly Catholic) theologians =

      the relatively new field of comparative ethics, which falls in the =

      at California State University, Los Angeles.</FONT></P>

      the responsibility and intelligence to devise a coherent, sublime =

      director of Campus Safety and Security, a position that will now =
be filled=20
      on an interim basis by Joe Becker, assistant director of Campus =
Safety and=20
      Security.</FONT></P>

      Life includes residence life; housing; the Center for Activities,=20
      Recreation and Leadership; Counseling Center; Damietta Center; =

      Bonaventure graduate, Trietley finished a 22-year career with the =
Army in=20
      May when he stepped down as the head of St. Bonaventure=92s ROTC =

      become director of security at SBU.</FONT></P>

presentations=20
      during the interview process highlighted not only his devotion to =
the SBU=20
      community, but also the transferability of his experiences in the =
Army,=20
      where he was responsible for the social, intellectual, and =

      development of young cadets and officer-trainees for more than two =

      decades,=94 said Dr. Michael Fischer, provost and vice president =
for=20
      academic affairs. =93He is also committed to continuing =
professional=20
      development in the field of student life.=94</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Trietley, =
who was=20
      professor of military science at SBU from 2003 to May 2008 and a=20
      lieutenant colonel in the Army, is =93honored that I was chosen. =
It was an=20
      easy decision to accept,=94 he said.</FONT></P>

Bonaventure is=20
      truly about people =97 students, faculty, staff, friars, and =
administrators=20
      all working together to create a unique and special environment =

was among 19=20
      people honored in March 2008 by the Commission on Independent =
Colleges and=20
      Universities (CICU) when he was named to the Alumni Hall of =
Distinction.=20
      The honor recognizes New York=92s Independent Sector graduates who =
make=20
      contributions to society through their careers and community=20
      involvement.</FONT></P>
      <P><FONT face=3D"Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">During his =
time as a=20
      U.S. Army infantry officer, Trietley was a leader in organizations =
as=20
      large as 3,200 people both during peacetime and the global war on =
terror.=20
      He managed resources in excess of $5 million. He planned and =
organized=20
      complex, multinational operations of great sensitivity under =
challenging=20
      conditions with strategic national security =
implications.<BR><BR>After=20
      receiving his bachelor of science in education at SBU, Trietley =
entered=20
      the U.S. Army. He was twice selected for Who=92s Who of American =
College=20
      Professors. Trietley has also been honored with military awards, =
including=20
      the Combat Infantryman=92s Badge for service in Afghanistan and =
the Bronze=20
      Star.</FONT></P>

      master=92s in education from Webster University in =

      Friends of Good Music in association with the Quick =
