'Dead=20 Last': New book by SBU professor traces history of Warren G. = Harding's=20 image

A new book by St. = Bonaventure=20 University faculty member Dr. Phillip G. Payne explores how Warren = G.=20 Harding=92s name became synonymous with corruption, cronyism, and=20 incompetence and how it is used to this day as an example of what = a=20 president should not be.

Payne=92s = book, =93Dead=20 Last: The Public Memory of Warren G. Harding=92s Scandalous = Legacy,=94 was=20 published by Ohio University Press (January 2009).

Payne = traces the=20 history of Harding=92s image from the election of 1920 to the = current debate=20 over George W. Bush=92s place in history examining such things as=20 presidential rankings, commemoration and legacy formation, = political uses=20 of history and memory, and the role of scandal in popular and = political=20 culture.

=93Harding = is generally=20 considered among the worst of the presidents, typically ranking = dead last=20 or as a failure in presidential rankings,=94 said Payne, associate = professor=20 of history at St. Bonaventure.

Ironically, = Payne=20 explained, during the 1920 election the Republican campaign = carefully=20 crafted an image of Harding as a small-town civic booster. The = Harding=20 campaign made effective use of modern techniques to craft = Harding=92s image=20 that enabled Harding and the Republicans to win a landslide = victory. When=20 Harding died in August 1923 he was widely popular. He was = commemorated=20 with a memorial, the last significant presidential memorial = campaign=20 conducted before the advent of the modern presidential library=20 system.

=93However, = it was not=20 an image that would last. The revelations of scandals soon ruined=20 Harding=92s reputation. Harding would become an icon of = presidential=20 failure,=94 said Payne.

Payne = teaches courses=20 in United States and public history at St. Bonaventure. Prior to = joining=20 the university faculty in 1998, he worked as the historic site = manager at=20 President Warren G. Harding=92s Home and Museum in Marion, = Ohio.

Payne = earned his=20 Ph.D. and master=92s degree in history from The Ohio State = University. He=20 did his undergraduate work at Marshall University, Huntington,=20 W.Va.

Longtime philosophy = professor authors=20 'must-read' book on comparative ethics

Rich Reilly=92s new = book bridges=20 the gap between Buddhism and philosophical ethics with an = unforeseen ally=20 =97 Christianity.

Released by = Rowman=20 and Littlefield, Reilly=92s =93Ethics of Compassion=94 places = central themes=20 from Buddhist (primarily) and Christian moral teachings within the = conceptual framework of Western normative ethics. The book bridges = Eastern=20 and Western cultures, philosophical ethics and religious moral = discourse,=20 and notions of acting rightly and of being virtuous.

=93When I = started the=20 project I envisioned writing a book on Buddhist ethics for Western = readers, utilizing the conceptual framework of philosophical = ethics in the=20 Western intellectual tradition,=94 said Reilly, a 40-year = professor of=20 philosophy at St. Bonaventure University. =93What was particularly = surprising, and really transformed my project as it developed, was = my=20 recognition of deep similarities between the fundamental truths of = Buddhist ethics and fundamental teachings of Jesus and certain = theological=20 interpretations of them.

=93My book = sheds light,=20 I think, on the meaning of =91The Golden Rule,=92 the story of the = Good=20 Samaritan, the Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard, and on a = number of=20 points made by well-known Christian (mainly Catholic) theologians = that do=20 not seem to be well-understood today.=94

The book = has been=20 praised widely.

Reilly=92s = book =93not=20 only bridges ethical theory and religious moral discourse more = generally,=20 but also Buddhist ethics and Western moral theory, in the process=20 enlarging the scope of both. This is a much needed and brilliant = work in=20 the relatively new field of comparative ethics, which falls in the = sparsely populated category of =91must read,=92=94 said Joseph = Prabhu, professor=20 at California State University, Los Angeles.

Reilly said = the book=20 =93really is a distillation of my =91teaching-learning=92 = throughout my career=20 at St. Bonaventure. In particular, the work I had been doing in = the 1970s=20 on =91freedom of the will=92 and =91action theory=92 was = resurrected as the final=20 chapter and is very much an important, central piece of = it.=94

Ultimately, = Reilly=20 said he hopes readers will realize that morality and =93doing the = right=20 thing=94 are not simply matters of doing what one was taught to=20 do.

=93Rather, = we each have=20 the responsibility and intelligence to devise a coherent, sublime = moral=20 orientation for ourselves,=94 he said. =93This requires us to = reflect on our=20 vulnerabilities and aspirations as well as on the inherited = traditions of=20 our culture. Understood in this way, the virtuous life, I argue, = is a=20 joyful, happy life.=94

Olean native Trietley = named vice=20 provost for Student Life

Rick Trietley=92s = job title just=20 got a little shorter; the interim tag no longer = applies.

Trietley = accepted an=20 offer Wednesday to become vice provost for Student Life at St. = Bonaventure=20 University, just three months after agreeing to fill the job on an = interim=20 basis when Stephen Pugliese stepped down. Trietley was also = serving as=20 director of Campus Safety and Security, a position that will now = be filled=20 on an interim basis by Joe Becker, assistant director of Campus = Safety and=20 Security.

The Office = of Student=20 Life includes residence life; housing; the Center for Activities,=20 Recreation and Leadership; Counseling Center; Damietta Center; = Campus=20 Safety and Security; and Health Services.

=93To add = someone of=20 Rick=92s caliber and integrity to our administration is a windfall = for this=20 university,=94 said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., university = president. =93He=92s=20 clearly demonstrated in his short time as interim vice provost the = capacity to lead and inspire people.=94

A 1986 St.=20 Bonaventure graduate, Trietley finished a 22-year career with the = Army in=20 May when he stepped down as the head of St. Bonaventure=92s ROTC = program to=20 become director of security at SBU.

=93Rick=92s = presentations=20 during the interview process highlighted not only his devotion to = the SBU=20 community, but also the transferability of his experiences in the = Army,=20 where he was responsible for the social, intellectual, and = leadership=20 development of young cadets and officer-trainees for more than two = decades,=94 said Dr. Michael Fischer, provost and vice president = for=20 academic affairs. =93He is also committed to continuing = professional=20 development in the field of student life.=94

Trietley, = who was=20 professor of military science at SBU from 2003 to May 2008 and a=20 lieutenant colonel in the Army, is =93honored that I was chosen. = It was an=20 easy decision to accept,=94 he said.

=93St. = Bonaventure is=20 truly about people =97 students, faculty, staff, friars, and = administrators=20 all working together to create a unique and special environment = for=20 learning and discovery. I hope I can contribute to that atmosphere = in=20 every way possible,=94 Trietley said.

Trietley = was among 19=20 people honored in March 2008 by the Commission on Independent = Colleges and=20 Universities (CICU) when he was named to the Alumni Hall of = Distinction.=20 The honor recognizes New York=92s Independent Sector graduates who = make=20 contributions to society through their careers and community=20 involvement.

During his = time as a=20 U.S. Army infantry officer, Trietley was a leader in organizations = as=20 large as 3,200 people both during peacetime and the global war on = terror.=20 He managed resources in excess of $5 million. He planned and = organized=20 complex, multinational operations of great sensitivity under = challenging=20 conditions with strategic national security = implications.

After=20 receiving his bachelor of science in education at SBU, Trietley = entered=20 the U.S. Army. He was twice selected for Who=92s Who of American = College=20 Professors. Trietley has also been honored with military awards, = including=20 the Combat Infantryman=92s Badge for service in Afghanistan and = the Bronze=20 Star.

He received = his=20 master=92s in education from Webster University in = 1998.

A 1982 = Olean High=20 School graduate, Trietley lives in Allegany with his wife, = Michelle, and=20 sons Ricky, 17, and Kyle, 15. Michelle earned bachelor=92s and = master=92s=20 degrees at SBU.

Music of India concert = at SBU=20 rescheduled to May 6

The =93Music of India=94 = concert scheduled=20 for later this month at St. Bonaventure University has been = rescheduled to=20 May due to an injury sustained by the artist in a fall.

The concert = featuring=20 Aditya Verma, originally scheduled for Feb. 20, will now be held = at 7:30=20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at St. Bonaventure=92s Regina A. Quick = Center for=20 the Arts. The concert is part of the World Music Series being = presented by=20 Friends of Good Music in association with the Quick = Center.

Verma, who = plays the=20 sarod, a 25-string Indian instrument, injured his wrist in a fall = on ice=20 and is in a cast, said Ludwig Brunner, the Quick Center=92s = assistant=20 director and director of programming. =93The injury is not = serious, but=20 obviously he cannot play for some time,=94 said = Brunner.

All tickets = for the=20 Feb. 20 performance will be honored on May 6. Those who bought = tickets for=20 the concert or selected it as part of their subscription series = need only=20 show up on the rescheduled date.

Any ticket = holder who=20 is unable to attend the May 6 concert may obtain a refund by = calling the=20 Quick Center Box Office at (716) 375-2494. Tickets may also be = donated as=20 a tax-deductible gift for use by students.

Verma is a=20 fast-emerging force on the world music stage, said Brunner. He has = won=20 numerous awards and the admiration of audiences across North = America,=20 Europe and India.

A disciple = of the=20 legendary Ravi Shankar, Verma also trained under the eminent Ali = Akbar=20 Khan and the renowned sarod master Aashish Khan. His creative=20 collaborations with artists of various traditions from around the = globe=20 have been received with acclaim and enthusiasm, as was his = performance=20 with the Washington National Symphony Orchestra on Capitol Hill = for an=20 audience of over 500,000 people. He recently hosted a CBC = television=20 documentary on Indian music.

The = next Extraordinary=20 Classroom Experiences program will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in = Garret=20 Theater. The topic is "Reinventing Shakespeare's Henry V: The = Director's=20 Cut."

On=20 Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Robert R. Jones Board of Trustees Room = in Doyle=20 Hall., the program is titled = "Earnings=20 Management and Corporate Social Responsibility: An In-Class = Exercise to=20 Illustrate the Short Term and Long Term Consequences" will be = held.=20

Newsmakers for Spring=20 2009

Kevin Brayer, = executive=20 director of the St. Bonaventure Buffalo Center, was elected the = 124th vice=20 dean of the Saturn Club located in Buffalo. At the club=92s = election, Brayer=20 was re-appointed as the House Committee Chair. He is the first = person to=20 hold both positions in the Saturn Club=92s 124 year history. = Brayer has=20 served on the Marketing Committee, Membership Committee, Finance=20 Committee, Employee Benefits and House Committee, as well as the = registrar=20 and on the faculty.

Abstract: From = spring 1987=20 to fall 1988, Cuba, NY was filled with rumors that its young = people were=20 worshipping the devil, sacrificing animals, and planning to commit = suicide. As the rumors intensified, the school superintendent = feared that=20 "the rumors themselves might cause us to lose a child." A local=20 psychologist said that the rumors had "reached pathological = proportions."=20 Mark = Phillips=20 covered the story for Notre Dame Magazine. In his talk about the = advance=20 and retreat of the panic, he will draw from investigation and = research=20 conducted for his article.
